Can Bruno break the PL assists record? | BY JOVE, HE'S EQUALLED THE RECORD | all comes down to Brighton

That record feels cursed, I don't think Bruno will beat it. Can see everyone missing a bunch of chances.

Sesko really should have scored on that first pass. I know he was pushed by he was pretty weak there.

Keeper got a touch sadly.
If he heads it on target and the keeper gets a touch he still gets the goal, so I don't get why. He's still picked Sesko out, and made the keeper do what he did. Should be an assist really.

In my head, he got at least one yesterday.

feck the record anyway. His chance creation is elite. Assists are dependent on the other player. Bruno has certainly done his part to be considered a world class great and a top midfielder in our history.

I always assumed the keeper didn't matter when it comes to assists unless they had hold/possession of the ball? E.g. if someone scored immediately after a keeper saves a shot then the person who took the shot got an assist?

So apparently Opta define an assist as follows:.

Opta, the Premier League’s data supplier, defines an assist as: “The final touch from a team-mate, which leads to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal.”

Crucially, it adds: “If the assist is deflected by an opposition player, it must be deemed as travelling to the goalscorer irrespective of the deflection.”

Which is exactly what happened, surely? Sesko was definitely going to get to the ball regardless, right? Bruno’s been robbed!

Side note. Apparently he already has 21 assists, using the FPL definition.

That's what I thought too

I don’t really care. It’s nice for him personally, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s like the Ballon d’or or MOTM, goal of the month etc. I don’t keep champagne on ice to crack open to celebrate the day we might have a player that completes the most key passes in a season, a keeper that might keep the most clean sheets or this.

I don’t feel like anyone knew or cared who held this record back in February. Be nice for him to get it but I don’t get why it matters any more it less to everyone else than who wins Sexiest Male at the Soap Awards

A part of me just wants to see the guy get a break, now that we've done what we needed to.

He's still got the WC straight into next season.

I guess they'll use the distinction on deliberately playing the ball vs deflection that they use to decide offsides.

Keeper deliberately dived for it and touched it and therefore doesn't count as deflection, rather it's a deliberately play of the ball.

Very annoying though.

Those stats don't feel right at all. .

You can't have Gerd Muller from the 1970's and only have PL era stats for England.

It should be like for like for direct comparisons.

Plenty of players have more than 20 assists in the English top flight pre the Premier League era.

Lets put those in.
It’s Thomas Muller.

A bit mad that Rico Henry got 20 assists from LB as well.

Carrick's gone full attack today it seems. Good chance to get Bruno an assist... or two!

Feel like he’s got to get at least one today if he wants to break the record. Otherwise everything will ride on the Forest game.

Well, that didn't go as planned...

Forest next who Villa just beat 4-0. You should imagine he'll need at least one here as Brighton is a tough game to finish on.

Get the impression the team is trying to force it too much so he gets the record. I dont think he'll beat it, but he should equal it against Forest.

Mentioned it elsewhere but he would need another 12 seasons at his average assist total over his 7 seasons at Utd to overtake Giggs's Utd assist record. 102 against 270.

Ridiculous longevity of consistent production sustained though his physical decline whatever you think of the man.

Came here to say this. I think the chance to hit 21 is now gone. I can see 20 being equalled which will be an amazing achievement in itself.

It would be brilliant to be proved wrong though.

With 4 games to go I was convinced he’d do it. Now with 2 left I’m sceptical. Seems like he’ll be stuck on 19 like Ozil that year for Arsenal.

I actually don't recall Ozil coming close to the 20 barrier

To be in this echelon is certainly an achievement

Would be nice if Bruno gets a few to smash the record, he just needs that luck

It probably doesn't help him that the team has mentally dropped since securing the CL. Although having Casemiro back will help.

I cant see this happening now. Feel like he needed one in the Liverpool or Sunderland matches.

He is going to be crossing like nobodies business on Saturday so maybe Maguire and Cas can make some runs.

Amad and Mbeumo struggling. Sesko injured. Mount and Zirkzee offering next to nothing. Maybe he can find Cunha for a couple goals this weekend or else he won’t break it unfortunately.

I don't think he will, unfortunately. But honestly, even getting close with our attacking options is an absolute miracle. I can't imagine how many assists he would have if we had a decent striker.
