We might just do it! Davies was incredible.
My brother is Canadian and he calls it football. That could be because we were raised in South America. Almost everyone in the US and Canada calls it soccer but I've continued to call it football. I usually say futbol for clarification and to avoid confusion. There's only one football and it's life.Disappointed to read that the Canadians too call it soccer. I expected better of you, probably shouldn't have.
Even on this forum North American posters can't call the sport by its proper name, no need to wonder why you'll never be successful in it, really - you're not actually participating.
Oh my..That sprint!
It's actually a British term. If would be diffrent if we didn't have the NFL or CFL. It's not a big deal. Not sure why you would care.Disappointed to read that the Canadians too call it soccer. I expected better of you, probably shouldn't have.

Decent. Probably the second best goal scored by a fullback in CONCACAF tonight. That sprint!
This still pisses me off that no one at United saw his potential. I've been following him since his debut for the Whitecaps at age fifteen, and it was blatantly obvious to anyone who loves the sport that he would be head and shoulders above his teammates in MLS and go on to great things in Europe and for the national side. How is it no one at United could see this?I really wish United signed Alphonso Davies. Such a phenomenal talent.
Jonathan David, I think. Heat of the moment. It was a pretty emotional night if you're Canadian. We've waited a long time to see the men's team look like contenders.who was the dumbass that shoved davies into the group of teammates? Super dangerous play there considering the circumstances.
United organized trials with him which the Whitecaps later cancelled so they obviously they did see it.This still pisses me off that no one at United saw his potential. Loved the game last night, and my voice is messed up still.
But when he was on the brink of moving to Europe, Shaw was nowhere, and Fonzie might well have made that position his. That said, he's far more effective as a wing back or an out-and-out attacking winger, and in that game last night he had more or less a free rein and was astonishingly good. He's done well at Bayern, but even there I feel he's only being tapped for a small part of his potential. And to be fair, I'm not sure United managers would have gotten any more out of him than Bayern. It's just that when we knew he would be leaving Vancouver, going to United would at least have taken the sting out of it for those of us who support both clubs (United first, the 'Caps second).Bayern has been good for his development and considering that Shaw has had that LB position locked down for a while now, it’s probably for the best that we didn’t get him.
He did play some games as a wing back for the Caps, but he was more effective as an out-and-out winger. Not that he's poor as a left back, of course; he's incredibly adaptable. But yeah, who knows how it would have gone at United had he joined? I tend to think you're right and he would have been yet more competition in that left-side forward position. My reaction to him going to Bayern at the time was emotional, to be honest; if he'd gone to United, it would have been easier on my Whitecaps-supporting side to let him go. I'm United first and foremost, but I've followed the Caps since the NASL days, and he's by far the best thing that ever happened to the club (I know the NASL Whitecaps weren't exactly the same organization, but still). The thing with Phonzie is that he was only playing as an attacking winger for Vancouver. No one would have thought that he'd make a solid left back at any point. Even Bayern Munich brought him in as a left winger first and foremost. It was only because of their defensive injuries that Davies was tried out at left back, and the rest is history.
There's no guarantee that he'd have become a left back for us. He could have become another winger coming through our academy.
Love his opponent's reaction - 'wha..? what's happening? can he do that?'
He's basically Bale, I think he would have just won a wing position with his pace and hunger, even while being a bit raw still. If we'd bought him instead of Dan James the next year....Bayern has been good for his development and considering that Shaw has had that LB position locked down for a while now, it’s probably for the best that we didn’t get him.
You're Guyanese heritage aren't you?My brother is Canadian and he calls it football. That could be because we were raised in South America. That's exactly right. The thing with Phonzie is that he was only playing as an attacking winger for Vancouver. No one would have thought that he'd make a solid left back at any point. Yep. Only English speaking country in South AmericaYou're Guyanese heritage aren't you?
I recently learned that it's considered a Carribean country despite being on the South American mainland, is that right?Yep. Only English speaking country in South America
Yes we're considered part of the Caribbean and The West Indies.I recently learned that it's considered a Carribean country despite being on the South American mainland, is that right?
Mostly right. He didn't only play as an attacking winger for Vancouver; he did play left back there occasionally too. That's exactly right.
Ah ok - I just meant from the Bayern side, he was signed as an attacker, and only was intalled as full back after Süle ruptured his ACL on top of Lucas' lingering injuries, and Alaba had to move to CB.Mostly right. He didn't only play as an attacking winger for Vancouver; he did play left back there occasionally too.
A Fred moment for the defender. That sprint!
Thanks for the heads up. I don't remember him playing as a left back/left wing back, but I'm not too surprised by that. He always had the athleticism to function in that role.He did play some games as a wing back for the Caps, but he was more effective as an out-and-out winger. I don't think it was too often, but I do remember a few games when he played there. And yes, exactly. I've rarely felt such certainty about a player becoming something very special. Thanks for the heads up. I don't remember him playing as a left back/left wing back, but I'm not too surprised by that. Maguire moment more likeA Fred moment for the defender.
That is cool, my folks are from Guyana as well.Yep. Only English speaking country in South America

The one thing I recall about that visit was how often power would go out, everyone had a generator.

He looked very good for Cercle Brugge last season and is now in and out of the Genk team. I do think that he'll be fine, there, though, and he'll be able to develop into a reliable all-rounded forward. That’s a blast from the past. Don’t think I’ve seen him play senior football but saw plenty of him for Chelsea and England youths. Always thought he was shite. Should be ok for Canada though and seems to be doing decent in Belgium.
Didn’t even know he was Canadian. No surprise it’s Brampton that he’s connected to though.
