Hall would improve us, but is he worth £50m more than say Seys or Salinas? That is the question I think.

This guy has the profile we are missing, who exactly are people expecting we can sign in our financial situation

Given his age, the reduced risk, and the fact that we’ve barely spent any money this summer, I would say yes, absolutely.

Seys would be coming from the Belgium league and Salinas from the Spanish second division. They could maybe adjust to the PL quickly, but maybe not. Young players like that aren’t being brought in to make an immediate impact - you’re gambling on them settling and developing over time. But we need someone who can come in and play some PL and CL games this season, because there’s no way Shaw’s putting in 55-60 games.

So would people prefer, say, Hall for £65m vs something like Chema Andres or Tresoldi and Seys for the same amount (or maybe less)? I could see opinion being split. Hall is of course less of a punt than Seys but not a sure thing and has some aspects of his game still to develop.

We have done well recruiting from other PL clubs recently but it doesn't change the fact that there is generally better value elsewhere.

I've moved my reply to the Hall thread as there's no Baleba chat in this back and forth.

I'd rather improve our starting XI and Hall is more likely to do that right now than Andres or Seys. Of course, we have no idea how much Andres and Seys would cost. But for LB, Hall is much less risky than Salinas or Seys.
Yeah I’d agree with this. But £65m is a hell of a lot for a fullback - I’m not sure we’d spend that given our recent thriftiness

Raum has a 34m release clause and only a year left on his contract. Could potentially be had for 25-30m. He’s 28 but might be a good rotation option given his attacking profile.

If the club is convinced he's the best full-back available and could be our first choice left-back for the next 8-10 years, then even £65m aren't a lot. I imagine he wouldn't even be on particularly high wages. Probably around the same as Mainoo at most.

On top of that; the club valued Mbeumo initially at £50m last summer and then bought him for over £60m. So what's the difference here. Of course he's overpriced, but if he's the right player for a position that will need a replacement very very soon anyways, go and make it happen.

Kobbie and Amad has been glued to the bench at times as well. Every manager has their own idea how to get the best out of team. That in itself tells us very little about how he could fit in with us.
But he is obviously not going anywhere in current state.
Kobbie and amad were dropped for good players. Not a 40 Yr old milner. This guy has done nothing, he's not davids

Having spent almost a decade trying to sign a competitor/ replacement for Shaw with no real success, we should go for this one. Let's say Salinas/ Seys are at 50/50 odds to become a successful successor to Shaw, meanwhile relatively rank Hall at 70-75%, given PL exp. We should not hesitate in spending 50m extra for even a 20-30% extra chance of success here. And I am taking a very conservative estimate here.

If you believe the club execs are rational, we can see from a long way that we need to sign a LB. With no strong links to anyone apart from Hall, I think we are dead set on signing him.

The cheaper options like Seys and Salinas can be picked up with a couple of days left in the window if we aren't able to get the main target.

Believe!

Raum is definitely an attractive option and he's my choice in case we can't sign Hall.

Only issue with Raum is that we will have to go in again in the market in a couple of years, so imo Hall is cheaper when you consider longetivity/ depreciation aspect.

Off chance Hall doesn't work or we have a new manager later that needs a different LB, we can still move him on and recoup some value.

If we consider all aspects Hall is actually a better value signing

You’ve spent all summer saying how you’d hate us to sign him! Such a transfer muppet
Initially I didn't like the idea, however that was before we improved the progressive passing options. Now that's happened I have warmed to the potential signing as he fits what we are missing in the midfield

Wait for Newcastle to set the fee, swoop in, get it done.

He's damaged his ankle ligaments at start of this month. He can't pass a medical. There's no chance of him moving in this window.

Why is he being linked to Newcastle then? And how come there have been recent reports indicating is not as bad as first reported?

Plenty of players are signed even if injured, up to the buying club to take the risk (Beleba will be back sooner than first thought). Rooney was signed with a broken Metatarsal and that worked out okay.

It’s clearly an injury that is manageable and not one to have a knock on effect to his career.

Good left foot and crossing but isn't the most mobile. I think that's the reason a Premier League team hasn't chased him.

Weird how much worse sounding damaged ankle ligaments sounds compared to sprained his ankle even though it’s the same thing. He’d pass a medical with a sprained ankle.

Depends on the grade, (1-3). Obviously it's not a 3 which is a rupture. If it's a 2, he's out for 6-8 weeks. Depends on the tear and how significant it is. If it was a 1, I'd presume they would have said sprained ankle.

Yeah but it’s 6-8 weeks to playing, you’d still pass a medical. Like has been pointed out already we’ve signed someone who had a broken foot, heart conditions and I’m sure many more with injuries previously.

ACL, MCL tears heart conditions and so on I could understand but if a team wants Baleba this summer he’ll move.
Does anyone want him and will Brighton price him out of a move who knows.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think a medical is about trying to pick out small short term injuries. They are aimed at finding material issues that could contribute to long term injuries such as dodgy knees etc. Players can still ‘pass’ medicals whilst injured.

Who would want him anyway if he’s out for a while? Not worth the risk as you don’t know what type of player he’ll come back as and it may take him a while to get back into some kind of form… so I don’t think teams are willing to risk it. Teams like us and Newcastle need to strengthen straight away. We can’t afford to be waiting 6 weeks.

His return date is the 23rd of August.

He’s got a sprained ankle not leprosy.

Well if Newcastle make a move then we know injury isn't as long as first initially suggested

I’ve seen posts guessing that this could be our late window signing. I can see it happening, to be honest.
I hope so. But why would Brighton be willing to sell him in the late of the window? They need depth as they are in European competition. Losing Baleba means they need to find a replacement. There will be little time for them to find replacement in the late of window. In addition, they already sold van hecke and Welbeck.

So another situation like Newcastle's then
