I have significantly warmed to idea since we have now three progressive passers in Santos, Tielemans and Bruno. He would definitely provide that athleticism and physicality needed in certain games

He was an unhappy player last season, so having a player downing tools will be nothing new for Brighton, and even less of an issue considering he wasn't always first-choice.
I simply cant fathom anyone wanting to sign him at this point. He was laughably bad last season. Brighton execs must be kicking themselves for letting their greed get the best of them one yesr ago.
The same execs that valued Evan Ferguson at 80 to 100 million and priced him out of a big move pre injury as well.
They obviously have done great business over the past few years but theres a few glaring mistakes as well.
Yeah, by all means i understand them wanting to maximise the transfer fees of their assets, but no doubt they got this one incredibly wrong.
Luckily for us. The last thing we need is to be stuck with another 80 mill (or whatever we were willing to offer) dud.
He was beginning to find form towards the end of the season.
He was dropped for Milner towards the end of the season. When Milner got Injured he came back in and started vs Chelsea(6.77 rating) Newcastle(5.88 rating) Wolves (7.39) Leeds (5.13) milner then returned so he was dropped again for the game against us
I don't know about laughably bad, but he was very inconsistent at least. And he just seems really dodgy on the ball. His passing reminded me of Fred - capable of being quite decent, but the next misplaced pass was rarely far away. In a top side, you can't really compensate for that through sheer physicality and running.
For a massive fee, I'm almost certain he would be a mistake, and that's obviously what Brighton want. We should be happy that we found pragmatic deals in Santos and Tielemans.
Any indication of what his mentality/attitude is like? I'm always wary of players who suddenly find poor form for a season after not getting a transfer they wanted - even if it is to come to us.
He's only 22 years old. Next summer, he could potentially be a 23 year old coming off the back of a top season.
There's no rush to cash in on him before he's over his peak. Baleba is young enough that his value is not going to be impacted too much by temporary bad form. One good season could easily make him a £100m asset in the current market.
From Brighton's point-of-view, there isn't a compelling reason to sell at a cut price at the moment. They're banking on him rediscovering his form and going for an extra £20-30m in 2027. It's what I'd be doing as well. Even if he only rediscovers a fraction of his form, it's still be worth it to keep him for another year unless someone pays over the odds right now.

The problem for me is that we don't know whether this is temporary bad form, or just him levelling off. There is too little to go off to pull the trigger on him with any degree of confidence. What we do know is that he was bordering on awful for most of last season. We shouldn't be buying players who have been that bad the previous year.

Would wait and see for at least another year, his contract is 27/28+1 year (so really 29) so next year it will be two years which might start put some pressure on Brighton even if he performs
If he was one of our own there would posts about how lucky we would be if someone took him off of our hands £20m.

What is it with the FOMO on Carlos Baleba? He's a very limited player who won't elevate us. If anything, his previous season is a stark reminder why he's worth no where near the 100m Brighton want (or even the 40m we were apparently prepared to pay). We're building our midfield on more intelligent players and Baleba will be a huge step backward. He offers physicality and tries to beat the press by carries rather than by intelligent positioning and passing (both of which he's below average at) and his intelligence in the final third is non-existent. This makes great reels but isn't what we want. I don't get what people see in him?
Possibly a January buy now. With Santos being better than expected -- yes I know it's early days, but these early days cannot be ignored -- we can be more selective in approach in acquiring that sixth midfielder, which at this point you better believe Baleba would be.

The B in plan B stands for Baleba. That ankle ligament injury has probably knocked down his price tag a few quid.
I think we’ve been playing the long game with him to try and get the price down, even briefing this week that we won’t spend >£60m on another midfielder this summer. So this is a bit of a spanner in the works.
