That's kinda of the thing here, Case is the only midfielder we have who can position well. He's not a DM, just a CM who knows the actual role.

Positioning is so damn important.
When he's on form, he reminds me of Carrick: not a DM ball winning tackler, good distribution, always in the right place, limited athletics - brings balance and calm to the team.

Let’s not kid ourselves about Casemiro this season. His performances have been… okay. And no, I’m not saying he hasn’t been good - he has - but let’s not get bogged down debating whether it’s just a few games here or there. The fact is, there have been far too many moments where our midfield has been completely outbattled. Sure, it’s not all on Casemiro, but he’s very much part of the picture.

If we want to genuinely compete with the top teams, we should be seeing far more from both Bruno and Casemiro than what we’re currently getting, and that's why I mentioned standards. Right now, Amorim feels the need to sit in a mid-to-low block against stronger opponents because, let’s be honest, he knows these two struggle to match the intensity. A team like Manchester United should be dominating most games. That doesn't happen, and hasn't done in a while.

So far this season he has done an excellent job against Arsenals 3 man midfield, Chelsea until substituted, Sunderland, Burnley (conceded two but not a midfield issue in my opinion). He didn’t play vs City and we lost comfortably, same against Brentford. When he’s in we’re a miles better team. But this was the same last season too, although we didn’t get the results all the time.

But in the EL he was fantastic, two vital assists vs Lyon, goals in other games too, an excellent performance against Villa who had about 4 CMs on the pitch. I’ve been banging this drum for a while but he brings a high level of control to our game in possession when he’s in, and it’s obviously decent defensively now he’s not stretched or isolated all the time. Amorim figured this out last season.

I’m not saying build a team around him but I’ve just been waiting for the guy to get his props. Because amongst some crap performances, he’s actually been pretty good.

Never thought I would say this - but with the way he is playing, we should considering offering him a new 12 month contract. This one is insane:

Arsenal scored after a set-piece with Casemiro on the pitch
Fulham scored after Casemiro had left the pitch
Burnley scored twice with Casemiro on the pitch
Grimsby scored twice with Casemiro not playing
City scored 3 goals with Casemiro not playing
Chelsea scored after Casemiro was sent off
Brentford scored 3 goals with Casemiro not playing
Sunderland didnt score
Liverpool scored a goal after Casemiro had left the pitch
Brighton scored twice after Casemiro had left the pitch

So - 3 goals against with Casemiro on the pitch (1 goal from open play, one from a corner and one from a long throw-in)
5 goals against after Casemiro had been subbed
8 goals against with Casemiro not playing...

We fall apart defensively when Casemiro isn't on the pitch

That’s interesting. With European football next season (hopefully), he may be needed, but what’s also clear is that he cannot effectively play 90 mins twice a week.

The thing is his profile of a player has seemingly dried up, nevermind a like for like replacement but even similar players as him are in short supply.

Yeah. His presence alone would make Lammens saved that Welbeck freekick, and Zirkzee to grow some balls when defending.

I agree. If he wants to stay and extend his contract by another year, assuming he takes a wage cut it’d be a smart move.

We will hopefully have European football next season.

I doubt he will take a 50% pay cut to stay on for one more year, it all depends on what other offers he has. If Saudi come in then I would assume not.

We should just get 2 new players in his position. Whilst he has been our best midfielder this season, we cannot ignore he needs to replaced.

Why was he substituted against Chelsea?

I could see him staying on reduced wages or going back to Brazil. I'm not sure Saudi interests him, I feel he's very driven and professional. But I could be wrong.

Yes, whenever he is taken off the pitch we look like a different team. It's scary.

That stat that we've only conceded 3 goals with him on the pitch, 16 without him, out of the total 19 says a lot. It shows we are so reilant on him, he is the only player in the squad who can do what he does.

We need to get him to sign a new contract 2 year deal with the option of a 3rd. He deserves it. Would be great if he was willing to accept around 275k p/w.

Plus we need to faze him out over the next 2 years, who are we signing to replace him?

World class experienced player!
That's a mindblowing stat considering he's played a good portion of the minutes so far this season.

he can't play 90 mins once a week as it is, he's been subbed every game he has started in, even those he's been playing well in. I mentioned in this in another post, is it a case of Amorim not trusting his fitness for 90 or maybe over protecting him to a degree. What is clear though, once he went off v Brighton, our mid fell apart. We need players, especially midfielder's wo can play 90 mins.

His resurgence has been outstanding...and its a lesson not to write off top class players just because they are out of form or in a system that's not playing to their strengths (Looking at you Jaime Carragher!)

I think he's still a very important part of our midfield...and i'd be happy to see both Bruno and Casemiro play that role next year as well (providing there isn't a sharp drop off in the next 6-8 months)

That being said -- it says something that he's only able to play 60-70 minutes a game which nowadays lasts 100 minutes. That means we absolutely have to get cover for him in almost every game.

So it's unreasonable for him to be commanding top wages. If he's happy with 100-150k a week I say we sign him for a 1+1 contract. The juice is worth the squeeze. But if it's only marginally less than what he's currently getting (300+?) than I'm not sure it's fair on the other members of the squad because there's no way he can play 2 games a week when we qualify for Europe. So there's going to be a need for at least 1 starting midfielder and likely another top prospect as well.

Our midfield battles will be always difficult with him and Bruno and the formation/tactics to some extent but he's done fairly well lately. Doesn't lose the ball easily and he's one of my favourite United players.

Yeah. His presence alone would make Lammens saved that Welbeck freekick, and Zirkzee to grow some balls when defending.
Weird reply...it's like we can't even praise our own players without bringing down some of our other players.

Note the performance level drop off, every time, when he's subbed. That's the measure of how much he does (seen or otherwise).

At one game a week, and carefully managed he's one of the most important players in our lineup. Will be really hard to replace.
Just don't replace him? Re-sign him on reduced wages, should be more football next season and depth will be needed anyway. Then bring in hopefully another CM high money signing. Someone world class.

Him being selected for international matches worries me. Just hope there’s no injury in the November international break. Man is a defensive monster this season and love his headers in both the boxes, very critical

Not sure he'd accept something like 150k if there's huge offer from some Saudi club but don't think we'd offer more than that. He'll be 34 in February and we're trying to 'normalise' our wage budget it seems.

He clearly is very helpful on the pitch infact we depend on him a lot. You can see his quality, he was the DM for the Madrid side that won multiple champions league title after all.

Beyond his ability on the pitch is his leadership and experience. Everyone want to get rid of players once they're over 30 this days it's as if they don't realize the importance of having experience and leadership in the group.

I think the dressing room stopped being honest in Jose tenure after the departure of Ibrahimovic and Rooney and the retirement of Carrick. SAF also kept around Scholes and Giggs even when they were past their physical peak.

Yeah we should go ahead and sign a younger DM, the squad should always have youngsters, players at their peak and also a bit of experience. I'll keep Casemiro (unless he isn't willing to take a pay cut) and give serious consideration to keeping Maguire too and also totally kill the idea of moving Bruno on, although we shouldn't depend on them week in week out (Bruno is still as fit as any player, we probably should start a succession plan soon, maybe Mainoo or someone else).

One game a week for 65-70 minutes, he’s good.

Any more than that and we’re flying very close to the sun.

Well we are usually not playing more than 1 game a week - and if we can avoid getting a goal against for 65-70 minutes, that will be more than good enough :)

Good point about the extra football. His contract renewal is dependent on us getting European football next year.

Nottingham Forest 2:2 Man Utd New
He was good, but I couldn’t help thinking how much better he and Bruno would look with a holding midfielder behind them.

He’s been much better than I could have imagined this season but the amount of times he gets beaten to the ball or walked passed and the fact he has zero ability to carry the ball are big problems.

Just so slow.... Strangely enough had more hope in him nicking a goal then are forwards today and he did play some nice passes here and there.

His aerial ability is ridiculous really, not that he has an a amazing leap or spring but more that he is so wide and strong that he just controls his space and is very hard to knock off balance when going for the ball. Elite at it.

Shit almost felt like he was playing like Mctominay today. Most of his good moments were in opponent box

He looked a little tired at the end, but you can see why he didn't come off. Even when leggy he's still better than the other options we have

Slow as feck but the ability to read a game is still there and in games like this one where he is good on the ball, he’s an essential part of our buildup. He’s probably our most threatening player from shots and set pieces.

Would be even better with a more dynamic, quicker player next to him. Would love to see that more with Bruno pushed back up, or have a midfield 3

It’s such a shame he’s just not a little bit quicker. He’s still quality but just far too slow now.

He's been putting that 6-7/10 in for a while. Defensively I think he could do definitely better today. Too slow to come out of the block, got easily bypassed on a couple of occassions.

Hes playing better but needs a partner other than Bruno who is often to far up the pitch. Forests number 8 would be idea!

Very unlucky not to score the rebound after Bruno’s long shot has hit the inside of the post, it could’ve been a brace for Casemiro

I thought he was good. He's slow and tires in the last 20-25, but overall he had a good game, on another day he might get 2 goals. Such a threat from set pieces too, usually with the move around to the back post.

A younger Casemiro with more in his legs would be brilliant in this formation.
