It's stats like this which make me baffled that many on here are so keen on Wharton (and a few are keen on the similar Stiller).

When playing with only 2 CMs, both of them have to be really solid workhorses defensively. Wharton and Stiller are both totally powder-puff and would do no more to help stop United conceding than someone like Mainoo.

People under-estimate how much Casemiro still brings to the table when on the pitch - 99th percentile for tackles per 90, 95th percentile headers per 90 etc. Finding a suitable replacement for him will not be easy, but someone in the mould of Wharton or Stiller is simply not going to cut it for either of the midfield spots, where United overall need to tighten up.

Casemiro has a shout for being the greatest ever defensive midfielder. He is obviously aging but he isn't 39. When he was 31 people said he was shot and that always seemed nuts. We seem to be getting a lot out of him now, which is fantastic.

I don't think it's possible to directly replace him so we might need to think about that differently eg. Are there centre backs we can get that will be able to make the 3 at the back complement the midfield a bit more

He is carrying this team on his back. Finding a proper replacement in the summer is absolute top priority.

The biggest problem is the lack of quality on bench. If only we had a player that would do the basics well in order to rotate Casemiro, but unfortunately Ugarte is pretty much a positional nightmare for the team.

Nicked a goal from a set piece again for Brazil in their friendly against Senegal.

Quite glad he and Cunha don't need to travel much this international break, too. They're playing in London and Lille, for some reason.

Glad to see him scoring for Brazil too. Why is Ancelotti never subbing him out? Back to back 90 mins in 3 friendlies.

Where do people rank him for post Fergie signings?
Tricky one but in my opinion, he’s been quite a bit better than Matic was. Very good first season, poor second (EtH tactics didn't help), third season was weird but he was a huge part of why we got to the EL final, and he’s started this one pretty well.

More respect needs to be put on Casemiro's name. He is vital to us, a key member of the team, the cog that makes the clock tick.

He has been a very good signing, only poor tactics let him down under ETH. Our midfield was wide open then.

The club needs to either take up the option for another year or sign him on a 2 year contract with another +1 option (more of a cover ourselves clause), give him the same money as Bruno which I believe is around 300p/w.

He needs to be fazed out, not replaced. The guy is a superb player with huge amounts of experience!!

He’s been immense this season, wasn’t great last but it didn’t need to be as reactionary.

He has to have a significant wage reduction. Despite his criticality to the team, we can’t be breaking our wage structure to extend the contract of a 33 year old Casemiro.

In top 5. I am huge fan of his so maybe i am overrating his impact but i would say 2nd best signing.
Bruno
Casemiro
Zlatan

Too soon to rate players who we signed last and this year.

It’s been an interesting one, because that assessment has changed a lot in his time here. First it looked really good, but then he seemingly lost his legs and it looked like we didn’t get enough out of the big fee and wages. But now he is turning it around again, so it’s beginning to look very positive overall. Also because he undoubtedly brings good leadership qualities.

I’m on board with keeping Casemiro for another season AND bringing in a proper successor. Wages will have to renegotiated, but he still has a decent runway left in him before going to Saudi or MLS, and he can teach his successor how the position is executed.

Ugarte should be sold to a club with lower aspirations.

How old is Bruno? Around 30. He is on 300k p/w I believe. Yes he is our captain, but has no way near the experience and titles Casemiro has. We need to retain his services, because even if we do buy 2 of mids we've been linked with, they don't have any experience in the CL or much experience generally.

We will go backwards without Casemiro, that stats clearly show us this. He needs to be fazed out, not replaced in a summer.

Agree. But that can be done without the 300k or so as well. Just for fun, can you name any club which has given such a massive contract to a 33 year old or similar, and came out of it as a winner.

Agreed. But we are a huge club in a deperate place, with no structure/replacement within the squad to immediately take over.

So we have the greatest DM of our generation and because he is a little old we want to discard him.

We are so much better when he is on the pitch and the stats show it. If anything he's increased his reputation by being one of the best players if not our best player at 33

I don't think the desire is to discard him, rather, him accepting considerably reduced terms to stay on and play a smaller role, which he might turn his nose up at as he can likely get a matching wage to what he's on for a few years in Saudi.

The club will not and should not keep him on on his current wage.

Absolutely can't be kept on his current wage, but if he's willing to take a significant cut it's not the worst idea to keep him for one more year as we're not exactly blessed with strength in depth there now.

Him and Maguire accepting a smaller wage (joke to call something around 150k small btw) would be a refreshing sign and set a good example to the others. But I highly doubt they would be up for that idea.

So Casemiro will be moving on in the summer.

They're basically free agents now. I can't see anybody credible offering either more than 200k so I'd say offer them 150k x 2 years.

If he wants to stay on as a squad player (on squad player wages), I'm more than happy with that. It may depend on how settled he feels in Manchester, his family situation, and his overall level of greed. I'd honestly be very surprised if he were to stay.

He comes across a person likes to be here for some more time even on low wages (he could have easily picked Saudi option if it is all for money).

We offered him the mammoth wages in first place to lure him, his agent said he didn't expect that kind of offer and our officials said first thing Case asked was the video of Gym, shows what kind of personality he is. I like him.

Even after winning 5 champion leagues, he celebrated league cup win with us like a kid in the candy shop. love that to be honest.

I think he loves it here and I reckon his family probably do to. I’ve not got much to base that on but his demeanour, his attitude on the pitch and the way he’s got into such great shape this season tells me he’s really taking it seriously and wants to do well. And I’ve seen some of the things his family post on social media and they seem to love it, celebrating with the fans, singing the chant we have for him.

I bet they feared the worst after his second season and all the negativity, but now it no doubt feels like the experience they were expecting when he joined United, and they appear to be embracing it. At this stage of his career, they wouldn’t have expect to have 70k fans going crazy and singing his name. He’s had some proper special moments and I’m glad that he’s managed to have that, because for the last 10 years it has probably been a depressing experience coming here and has severely dented some careers.

I can’t see him accepting a one year deal on half his wages, knowing the club would be trying to bring in someone to replace him in the starting eleven. It will all come down to whether the club are willing to take the 1 year option on his current contract.

He can only last about 60 minutes once a week and we’ve seen in the past his fitness and form can just completely disappear so ideally you wouldn’t want to commit to anything until the summer but he will be getting offers in January so might not have that luxury.

While I'm appreciative of his form this season, at the back of my mind you know it isn't going to last. We need to find a replacement for him and very soon. No more complacently because a veteran suddenly shows some form we must be ruthless to get back to the top.

200k a week should be fine, you'd be hard pressed to find a like for like player quality wise anyways.

Been a decent season for him, but would prefer to let him go and fresh start with someone new.

Offer him 50k and a coaching role. Deary me

He’s our biggest threat in the box. If the plan was to spam crosses, why take him off? Take off a CB.

He was awful, slow, and couldn't move with the ball at all.

Extending his contract shouldn't be an option.
