His contract expires next summer. He has no sale value, so I don't see what benefit it would bring to just let him leave on a free would be. Sure, we would save £18m in wages, but we should at least explore the option of renewing his contract for another year on reduced wages. He is still comfortably our best CM and has been one of our best players this season. We would also need to replace him if he were to leave, and that would mean less money to buy players for other positions we need as well. Makes too much sense to keep him for another year, imo.

One of our best players this season. Best player on the pitch today even at his age. How good must the Madrid team have been when he was the water carrier of the midfield in his prime? Demonstrates how far off we are from being a good team.
He is the greatest ever defensive midfielder and he isn't that old. Everyone on the forum said he was done two years ago, but should just go to show how bad the average opinion on redcafe is.

I would strongly debate that. But even if true, he’s never been a great midfielder for us and he’s been here 4 years.

It’s a consideration, I certainly wouldn’t say it’s a no brainer.
We'd be hard pressed to find an equivalent replacement and it would be outright impossible if you add in his experience and know-how.

His profile is rare as is and those we've been linked with don't seem to quite fit the mold either and it's important to remember that workrate alone doesn't constitute a good midfielder, ugarte is evidence of that.

Some of our of wage bill will be reduced come summer, if we could keep him on a bit longer and on more manageable wages it would be a very low risk course of action and potentially one that could pay dividends down the line.

I agree, as good as he’s been in certain games this season it’s time to move on. The club has made so many bad decisions based on sentiment and keeping him would be another one.
It's hardly sentimental to keep the one player in our squad who has proven to be a good and reliable central midfielder? Especially if we get into Europe next year, you need depth and Casemiro is a quality experienced player who just needs his minutes managed and a side that doesn't expose his weaknesses. Ancelotti took over Brazil and instantly made him captain for a reason

The reason to keep him on top of his performances is that he's won everything and having that experience in the locker room is vital. We dont have that many players who have won big competitions and certainly not serial winners who kept winning competitions.

Its not enough of a reason to keep him on outlandish wages and im skeptical he'll want to stay if other teams are offering high wages to get him. But if we do let him go we'll have to get other players who have won things to replace that part, on top of a new midfielder to replace him positionally

I understand the rationale. For me, it’s not just that he would need to accepts a vastly decreased wage, he would also need to accept being a squad player - because we should be buying a couple of midfielders that would seriously limit his appearances.

If we didn’t get into Europe, then I definitely wouldn’t keep him.

So yes, he has value to us. But this season is the last he should be our first choice midfielder. If he can live with that, and a wage that reflects that. Then yes, a 1+1 deal would suit the club. Would he want that? Potentially with a massive payday elsewhere?

Fair enough everything will have a debate in football, even Messi. He has the strongest case to be id say, like Messi has the strongest case to be the greatest overall player, although that is obviously a stronger case.

I’m not doubting he was a great player. However, he’s never been a great player for us. He’s been good and very good at times, but nowhere near a world class player (for us) over 3.5 seasons.

Wolves 1:4 Man Utd
Thought he played really well again tonight

Did ok overall, a lot of sloppy passes and seemed to give it away a lot. In fairness he can’t really move with the ball and often just has to get rid of it as quickly as possible so his passing is prone to being erratic.

Let’s all just be happy the round-the-corner-first-time-to-nobody pass has been stopped

Decent again but no more - looking forward to hopefully sorting our midfield out in the summer

If he takes a massive pay cut he's not a bad player to have on the bench. Loads of experience to pass on

I’d keep him on reasonable wages. He’s the only CM in the team that truly understands what needs to be done in the middle of the park from a tactical and technical perspective

I think he's got himself in really good shape this year because of the World Cup. My guess is he'll probably prefer to drop to a lower level after. If he really did make all the right sounds about wanting to stay and being up for the challenge etc, and wasn't asking for high wages, maybe we could consider extending but honestly I don't think that's where things will be.

Man Utd 4:4 Bournemouth
Probably will go down "another good game" from Casemiro. Since he scored. And scoring and assisting is the currency United values midfielders in. Wonder why we struggle to get a hold of games. Against fecking Bournemouth :D

Would like to have seen more from him, but not bad considering all things. A midfield three setup would protect him from overheating and yet at the same time give us more in attack in defense. But it's not in the cards with this manager, so we must continue to drop points to clubs like Bournemouth match after match.

Suspended for Villa who have a far better midfield than ours.

He can't run.

Is he the best Attacking Defensive Midfielder in the world?

He would be magnificent as a sitting #6 allowed to attack only on set pieces. Or alternatively with another energetic but disciplined B2B midfielder.

I think he's doing very well this season considering that this setup is playing against him. He has no natural midfield partner next to him and is part of a 2-man midfield, often against teams which play three players there or pack it tightly for large parts of the game.

Casemiro is doing well in spite of how Amorim sets the team up.

As soon as he gets that first yellow card it’s a matter of time before he’s subbed. Can’t say I blame Amorim in this instance.

Another pretty good game otherwise.

I like what Casemiro brings but at about 30 minutes he started pinging vague, aimless balls into channels for quick turnovers.

Im not on about the one to Dalot that was slightly mistimed, that had intent. Im on about times that he's spraying it wide and Mbuemo, Amad, whoever haven't got a chance of getting there.

I don't know if it's an instruction when we're leading or an on field decision he's making but I've picked up on it across a few matches now and it always seems to be the warning sign that the match is going to go south.

No Casemiro for Villa :o

Villa going for a 10th Win against a United side without De Ligt, Amad, Mbeumo, Maguire, Maz and Casemiro…seems almost unfair to give them such an advantage.

That's when we saw his best. No matter how poor Fred was on some departments, he was very energetic and compliment Casemiro the most ever has in our squad.

Don't blame him for that yellow card, he had to do it - the annoying thing is that the rest of our team allowed it to get to a situation where he had to make that challenge.

Bruno gave it away and could’ve committed the foul right there at the half way line

the whole team (particularly Zirkzee) need to learn from him on winning headers
