Why the thread?

Because I am petty and these things matter to me. Despite Chelsea having won more trophies than us in the last 12 years, I considered us more successful because we had more major honors than they did. A PL trophy for me is worth more than 10 FA cups. But now that they have matched our league trophy total, I don't like it and want it to be an extra motivation towards our winning the league next year. We can't be behind these..

We just forgetting the World Club Championship then? Oh and the FA Cup in 2004? (Roman bought then in 2003)

we had a crazy drop off because of ferguson's retirement and the club's lack of preparation for it (moyes, really?)

but yeah, hopefully get the europa this year and start fighting for the league next.

Meh, the PL was always gonna be a mess when Fergie retired. At that moment, Chelsea and City pretty much became the new favorites. And it will remain that way until we regain our balance.

Things are definitely looking brighter under Mourinho, but we need to keep breaking the bank like we did last summer. We already got the legendary status and the best manager possible. What we need now, is top players.

If 1 EPL = 10 cups then they're 1 Europa League (which I assume is counted same as the title?) and 0.2 EPL ahead of us. We're fecked even if we win Europa lads, pack it up.

Edit: shit, just noticed it's 10 FA cups, so they're actually 0.3 ahead.

Can never really get myself arsed either way when they win it. I have a chelsea supporting brother but even that cant curb the.. indifference?

Them and city are the lesser of the two evils ( you guys) it'll probably take a few decades and for them to get within a few of our hauls for me to actually start to care, if they last that long of course. Which by all means they should do.

Shocking haul by Arsenal. Still, Roman did take over in 2003. You have missed off our Invincible 2004 season as well as our *well deserved* 2005 FA Cup.

I'm with this. I just don't care. If you told me Chelsea are on the verge of winning something big and we aren't in the race I'm fine with it and that says it all. If it was Liverpool or City I'd be shitting it and hate the World for a while. Even Arsenal would get me worked up a bit but just couldn't give a toss about Chelsea.

Weird stat. United are the most successful club since the glazers bought us. Villa are more successful than Chelsea since the beginning of time. You can twist these stats all you want. The fact is Chelsea are currently better than United and United are historically greater than Chelsea.

Since Roman's money they have won a lot but not exactly dominated. No where near. Pretty shit football club completely manufactured by oil money.

I think Man City and Man Utd will be a different kettle of fish next season. Conte has been brilliant and a breath of fresh air but he was a little lucky inheriting an already strong squad which didn't need the kind of rebuild that the Manchester clubs needed while getting his hands of N'Golo Kante who would have made a huge difference to whatever club he went to. But Luiz and Alonso were also great signings.

Pep is going to spend crazy money over the summer. You can see City getting the likes of Sanchez, Neymar, Fabinho etc and doing great things next season.

Pretty much this.
Personally, I don't think hollow is the correct word. We were a very good side before the money (in terms of league positions) however, united hit the jackpot In that they were huge whilst the commercial expansion took place. Had it been 20 years earlier, then Liverpool would be the machine that united are (assuming they were ran as well from behind the scenes as united were).

At the time Chelsea were taken over, united were so far ahead financially (due to success) that the only way to catch up was from an artificial cash injection.

We weren't a relegation side, we were a good side who got the boost required to get us to the next level.

Also, with regards to the three in a row, I can't see it happening again. Too many clubs so close together to make it impossible in my opinion. It's a lot harder now compared to 10 years ago.

I agree too, funny as I'd never thought about it til just then. Liverpool and, to a slightly lesser extent, City, and I'd be really hacked off.

Corrected.

We are not counting glorified friendlies, otherwise we would have included the Community Shield too.

I see what you did you there, but unfortunately it wasn't as clever as you thought.

Roman's purchase of Chelsea was a watershed moment in the premier league. First time such a major investment was poured into a PL club by a foreign owner. A lot changed in the PL after that.

Chelsea's success is so hollow and they've never won 3 in a row.
We can keep telling ourselves that. Life is not always a Bollywood feel good story where you rise from penury to the pinnacle, and in the process win everyone's heart. In real life, you need to make investments to win real rewards. Roman invested heavily in Chelsea and is reaping the rewards. They are one of the most successful clubs of the last decade with a brilliant set-up, mega shirt sponsorship deals, a large global fan base and trophies to show for. Chelsea's valuation has gone up multi-folds in the last 13 years. He can sell the club now and gain a healthy profit from it. This has worked out pretty well for everyone - The clubs, the fans and the owner.

You think we never had any investment poured into the club? If the answer is no, you need to read about the history of Manchester United.

You do know that even before Roman bought you, you were buying players like mad. From early 90s till before Roman bought you you've spent more money than Arsenal :houllier:

I do agree with you pretty much, you were a good side before the money, it's just that whole Chelsea City thing of not having the history etc and building your deserved place at the top over time. A lot of teams could have had "the boost required" and gone on to do what yourselves and city have done.

To be honest though, it's easier for a United fan to say oh Chelsea have won, so what, it's hollow, which is easier to take than if it were Liverpool or city and arsenal. I'm a bit pissed so excuse me if my post is a bit crap.

They had an extraordinary foundation provided by a new owner at a time when such inputs of resources were rare. But Chelsea have won two out of the last three PLs in an era when those inputs are common. Nothing hollow about their success. It's good players, brilliant management, and belief.

Considering the alternatives of Liverpool, City or Arsenal, I'm ok work Chelsea mopping up the bulk of the trophies we don't win.

Also, Mourinho is responsible for most of their league wins and he's with us now. Roman's money is crucial but spending tons of money doesn't automatically lead to success. Need a good manager to spend the money wisely.

Editing my own posts.
I wrote an article for Fancast a while back on the fallacy of managerial stability (this was during the Moyes era, so I was pushing an angle) and a large component of it was the fact that Chelsea's oft-ridiculed managerial carousel has actually been hugely successful, by almost every metric.

Tbh, I think it's pointless to choose a certain time to start recording success from it and ignore everything else happened before it. One can say we are the most successful club in England since SAF was appointed manager, here, simple and easy !

Take the history as a whole not parts.

Like I said in the match thread and got shot down for. Chelsea are the biggest club in the prem if you are growing up in their era. London club, rich lifestyle, cups and titles galore.

If we don't win multiple leagues soon we won't be getting a look in at any top players.

Not that I disagree with your assessment, but I doubt even a few months ago many people on a Manchester United forum would have categorised the Europa League as a major trophy ahead of the FA Cup.

Don't care about city at all, literally they could win the league 5 more times and it doesn't annoy me. Their club is utterly devoid of any personality and it's plastic and shite

Unfortunately, Chlesea have beaten us to another milestone; "the European treble". http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/newsid=1947872.html
Juve, Ajax, Bayern and most recently Chelsea have already won all the three European cups; CL, EL and cup winners' cup (the latter was discontinued).

Many people here look at EL as merely our ticket to CL. Yes CL is important for the club, because of its direct financial rewards from UEFA, and indirect financial rewards from sponsors. It's also crucial for the club image and its superstar appeal.

But EL is stil a major (yes major) trophy we need to win sooner or later. We'd better win it now at one of our lowest points, than waste a European season trying to win it while we're back on top again.
