Chido Obi | 2024/25 Performances

His linkup play looks quite good, also knows what runs to make. Pity he didn’t get a chance with Dorgu on the pitch because we’d completely gave up on crossing by the time he came on.

I would have liked to have seen us play this game with Obi starting and Hojlund coming off the bench. There was less space when Obi came on and we also didn't cross it as well. In that first half, I wonder if Obi would have been more influential.

I think he's already better than Rasmus.
He should start ahead of Rasmus however Amorim has to be careful because Chido playing well and scoring right now does nothing to help us towards our main goal this season. If anything, all it'll do is further damage Rasmus's confidence. Next year will be a different story.

Potential is obviously there, but he really shouldn't be anywhere near the Premier League at this stage in his development, desperate times though I guess.....

How has he been performing?

I really wish we managed to keep hold of him. We could have brought him through into the first team squad with Dowman next season.

He and Dowman would have formed part of a quality academy group, alongside Saka, MLS and Nwaneri.

I think United have done well in poaching him and Heaven out of our youth ranks.

What? He did well
Honestly don’t know what that poster was watching. He made a similar comment in the Hoj thread. Seems like Rasmus’ agent with those comments

Obi should be used wisely though. Think he is good enough for a spot on the bench and we should use this time to test him against PL defences and get him some experience there. Really does remind me of Rashford when he burst through, but with better hold up ability.

Did a few nice touches, but wasn't a threat, looked physically not ready for the PL yet.

Where did he show he's not physically ready? Anytime he was involved his hold up play looked very good. Not sure what you can ask more.

Well he was beaten for strength, and he wasn't beating players for pace. He was generally quite easy to defend against.

It's tricky because Obi can't play in Europa. So if you drop Hojlund for any length of time and Obi does well, then you still have to go back to Hojlund come Thursday night.

So if I was the manager (at this stage of the season) I'd prioritise Hojlund (no matter how out of form he is) and hope he can score a goal before the semi and hopefully final.

The less said about his cameo, the better.

Struggling to see what either of you saw. He physically looked ready, did a better job of holding off his man for his link up play.

A part of me does wonder whether he would have found the spaces in the box Rasmus didn't in the first half for some of those crosses into the box.

Doesn't look ready but he was no worse than Hojlund has been recently and he looks better technically.

Did we not get a reasonable explanation for NOT registering Chido for Europe?

You don't even have to frame it as being dropped, just say he's resting Hojlund for the important games.

Some time out the spotlight will probably do him good. Hojlund also tends to look brighter when he comes off the bench, so starting Obi and bringing Hojlund on for 20-30 minutes makes more sense.

This notion that once he gets 1 goal his confidence will be up and he'll start to perform is destroyed by the fact that he's scored several times already this season and at no point has he improved afterwards.

A shame that he couldn't score today as he was close. He is not ready for this level, yet he keeps getting himself in great positions. I hope he gets more playing time.

Definitely looks like there's a good striker in there. His movement is good and both times he got a shot they were going in the corner.

It's quite an indictment on Hojlund that Chido has looked better than him multiple times in different ways.

Yeah, I think technically he looks ready, but physically he couldn't get the power on any of his efforts today. He held it up really well though.

Looks a good prospect, I just hope we handle his development well and integrate him in to the team slowly. Let him develop physically before expecting too much from him.

The kid looks huge. He even dwarfs some of the centre backs in PL. Can’t wait to see him put on some muscle to add to his explosiveness and ability to bully. High hopes!

He comes on and he always fashions one or two chances.

He's a natural striker.

Got himself in two scoring positions and worked the keeper within minutes of coming on. He's not ready to be a starter but he's still proving to be a better CF than Hojlund with his movement in the box.

It was impressive how he made that space and opportunity against very solid PL center backs. The kid need more chances, will come good imo.

Quick google search says he's 6'1? Seems far taller! Absolute unit. Loved how he made that run for his shot. Potential is there.

He always looks dangerous.

I feel like when he gets a full match I am incredibly confident he will score. Which says a lot about a 17 year old in a pretty poor side.

Extremely exciting prospect.

So sad that he looks so much more productive and comfortable than Hojlund playing the same role. There's defo a player in there, either a good loan or being the sub striker (with two ahead of him) would be ideal for him next season.

Delap comes to us and they get Chido on loan?

Yeah, there is no way he's 'only' 6' 1"

The thing that should hopefully stand out to people is that he has good instincts with his movement and sniffs where the space is, and is alive to when others are taking shots to get in and around the goalkeeper.

Footwork and composure should hopefully come with time.

That's twice now he's stayed on his feet where a more experienced striker would have gone down and won a penalty. You could tell it was on his mind as a few minutes later he flung himself on the deck after the faintest of contacts

Great to see him putting defenders in trouble like that.

Hope Amorim starts him in one of the games before season ends. I’d be hesitant in normal circumstances on starting a 17 year old up front but would be nice to see more of this lad.

Interestingly, was yesterday the first time we had two up front? The Zirk played more like a 10 didn’t he when he started with Hjolund.

Honestly I kind of want to see what it'd be like a little more, maybe it could help with our attack just to give defenses something different

Maybe. But remember what happened to the last guy we inserted who wasn't quite ready for prime time?

He broken.

I'm not necessarily condoning a full 90, but more of the last 30 mins or even the first 45 mins of a game.

Garnacho is better coming off the bench and so he could come in the last half of a game to go at defenses. And it can give Hojlund some help with drawing the defenses away from him. The problem with Garnacho is that he wants to drift out wide when really he should be inside and let Dorgu keep the width

Really hope he impresses and can bag a goal. He needs to be treated carefully and a few years before he is ready but what a boost it would be for him to score
