Chido Obi | 2024/25 Performances

He's just not ready. Which is no criticism, he's only just turned 17. He wouldn't be playing if we had any fit/capable strikers.

Nice bit of play near the end though.

He's not ready to lead the line. Perhaps, in 2 CF system, he may be useable as substitute.
So, it'd better loan him out next season.
The kind of forwards we have always lack of running pressure to the opponents .... no matter Hojlund, Zirkee or Obi Martin.

He’s nowhere near ready. Not every 17 year old can be a Messi, Ronaldo or a Rooney as a teenager.

I don't really care about his performance but it worries me how slow he looks.

He looks slower than Zirkzee

I thought he did okay for his age and his first debut. Had a decent chance to score and was involved in many attacks. Not saying he was better than Hojlund, but also not that worse.

Happy with his performance and every game creates a chance for himself. I think hes been really unlucky with shots being blocked etc.

You can see some good attributes but it's a tough ask in an away game, underperforming team and a lot of other young players in the starting line up. Didn't get much service at all.

Exactly this. No shame in it at all, he's a kid thrown into a very tough scenario.
He needs time and patience. People forget how young he is. We could give him three more years of developing without pressure and he’d still only be 20!

Welcome to life as a United striker.

The moments he actually got the ball to feet he did some nice things. Will need to get stronger, that’s for sure.

I think people forget how raw Greenwood looked in his first half season of football. It wasn’t really till the second season and post lockdown that he started to look like a potential superstar. Obi is the type of player who will need time to grow into his body to be able to use his physicality. There’s a reason you rarely see super young players who aren’t quick wingers or super technical players. The physicality takes time to develop.

The important thing is he has looked like a dangerous goal threat in almost every appearance despite being generally unimpressive in the rest of the game.

If we buy another striker (or 2) and have him as third choice next season I will be happy enough. This experience is not totally ideal but it is good experience for him and hopefully can aid his development. Hope he can nab a goal before the end of the season

I don't know if it's a bad or a good thing but he looked no worse than Hojlund.
This is the kind of performance that would have the Højlund thread radioactive right now. Difference is of course that we didn't pay a king's ransom for him and that he has way less experience, so it's only right that he gets more leeway. But it suggests that it wouldn't have been better to just start him over Højlund for the last few months.

Well I for one am shocked that a 17 year old struggled to lead the line against a midtable Premier League side. He's clearly a bust.

Basically this in a nutshell

I suppose it's all about expectations. This is what you expect from a 17 year old making his first league start. It's not what's expected from a £60m signing from abroad.

Exactly. And we didn't make it easy for him either, of course, but that's been the story for whoever plays striker for us this season.

I actually think people are being a bit harsh on his performance and are underestimating just how shit many of Hojlund's performances have been so far this season. I thought he did alright for a 17 year old on his full Premier League debut.

Is he ready to lead the line for us? Of course not but he held the ball up on a few occasions and helped start an attack or win a foul which Rasmus struggles with consistently, and managed to get himself in a position to have two or three decent chances.

I think he will spend next season out on loan as he is clearly not ready for this level. The fact that Wheatley and Hugill are out on loan is why he is being pressed into action so soon but for his own sake he needs time to develop at a lower level.

Tough game for him today against a physically strong defence. The minutes will do him wonders and help his progress.

17-19 is usually a big time for physicality changes, so don’t be surprised if he comes back from the summer break a different shape altogether

I think it's too soon even for a loan. I don’t think he's played all that much U21 level yet. It's not like he's too good for that level already.

Shame he was not able to put away that chance he created for himself towards the end of the game.

It would have been the prefect way for Obi-Wan-Chidobi to open his account...on international Star Wars day (May the Fourth be With You)

Good for him to get his first start today. He's obviously not ready for premier league football yet but you can definitely see glimpses of his talent. He's a strong lad for his age and is able to hold the ball up well, knows how to make good runs and occasionally is able to fashion a chance for himself. Days like today will do him a world of good as he gets used to the level required.

He's not going out on loan already. Jeez.
He'll spend another season in reserve football.

Edit.
And who's going to take a, though somewhat talented, 17 year old inexperienced player and give him minutes?
No one at a decent level.

Hopefully yesterday will quiet the folk who believe he should be starting or at least permanent first teamer.
A long way to go before he is ready for that step up, but there is definitely a player in there.

No where near ready. I think he needs a season for the U21's next term, training with the first team and used as a bench option for the cup games.

Does anyone feel he lack the intensity? Is it the same for the unders? @top1whoisman @limerickcitykid

Yes he is always a bit aloof. Generally teenagers who are tall as feck and lanky will look the same tbf.

In fact are there any really tall players who are known for intensity? They can run just as hard as a shorter player but their physical appearance just wont give off the same hard worker look.

Don’t think there was much to take from that performance. Whilst being very tall for his age, he’s clearly far from physically developed. Got game managed by two bigger CBs with a lot more experience than him at this age.

I am sure it's a case of both nerves and overthinking. The game is just flying by him before he even knows how to react or what to do.

With more game time, the game will slow down for him, and then his natural talent will emerge.

Thing is Messi and Ronaldo were not even that widely known at 17. Rooney was cos he was playing in the PL.

Barcelona did with Yamal. When he was 16 even, not 17.
