Chido Obi | 2024/25 Performances

The Maurice Revello Player of the Tournament. list is not something to take lightly. Former winners includes

David Ginola 1987, Alan Shearer 1991, Rui Costa 1992, Thierry Henry 1997, Juan Roman Riquelme 1998, Javier Mascherano 2003, James Rodriguez 2011 and Douglas Luiz in 2019.

BtW Cunha was top scorer in 2019.

Winning this honor at 17 is really something.

Well done and shows there is still some hope for him despite the Caf oracles writing him off already

Pleased to hear that Chido has won the Player of the Tournament award.

I was one of those who'd watched him with our youth teams earlier this season and was warning against throwing him into the first team too early as he was clearly still raw and not ready to shoulder the burden and scrutiny of leading our attack aged 17.

In the end, due to our attacking issues, I can see why he did get some sub appearances and while he did OK for where he is at in terms of his progression, those appearances did mainly show that he wasn't really ready for the first team at such a young age and it was only circumstances that led to it and not the fact that he was one of the few ready by that age.

Next year is a tricky one, and in terms of first team squad here then obviously an awful lot depends on how successful our summer is in terms of incomings and outgoings in the #9 position. Ideally we'd get that position sorted and let Obi develop at his own pace and be utilised when / if he's ready for it.

The start of the season seems easy enough - go on the pre-season tour and get some minutes in the friendlies, and spend the first half of the season with the U21s / training around the first team squad. And then assess in January. By then, he's probably reaching the stage where it's not worth hanging around the graveyard of U21 football too long - but loans at a reasonably high level are an issue in terms of game time (some of our kids even struggle for game time in league 2 and non-league).

I've not watched him in the reserves.

Looks like he has good potential.

However, does he come across a bit slow? A bit static sometimes on the pitch.

Obviously has time on his side but was wondering if anyone has felt this.
