What exactly does the Brighton chairman expect? They're a team probably not good enough to be in the PL so the fact Hughton kept them in it for 2 seasons in a row should be applauded not met with the sack

They'll struggle again next season and without Hughton I'd make them heavy odds on now to go down

Stupid stupid decision. I imagine they will get relegated next year.

This is the third time Hughton has been sacked really harshly. What is it about him?

They have probably looked at Wolves and are thinking well why can't we make the same impact

I’m surprised so many people are up in arms about this one. He’s done a good job to get them into the PL and stabilise then for a season but the run they’ve been on at the end of this season has been nothing short of abysmal. The football they’ve played at times (Newcastle for example was really really poor). They were lucky not to be relegated and only won two games in the league in 2019. Fair enough the cup run they managed to put together was great but I think Hughton has reached his peak there imo. He strikes me as another Warnock. Excellent in the Championship and getting clubs promoted but just doesn’t have the next level.

Have these feckers actually seen their squad? By rights they should be down there with Huddersfield.

This is like if Bournemouth were to give Eddie Howe the sack because he didn't keep them in the top half.

Mental.

The right decision.

He’s sucked all the joy out of that team, spunked a lot of money on attacking players that he never uses, plays dour, negative football and they would have been dead cert for relegation next season with him at the helm.

I guess the question is whether its Brighton's peak they've reached or Hughton's... I guess it makes sense for them to try and find out though.

Think its the right decision. He's a good manager but he's taken them as far as he can. Going into next season finishing 17th generates very little momentum if you keep the same manager who nearly got you relegated. Time for some new ideas.

Predicted this a few weeks back, he's taken them as far as he can take them. He'd take them down next season if he stayed so I think a fresh change and forward thinking manager is needed.

They won just three of their last 23 league games and none of their final nine.

Chairman Tony Bloom said that run "put our status at significant risk".
The irony of the statement being the blatant disregard for Hughton having played a massive part in giving them that status in the first place.

This is a strange decision, I get that yes if you finish one place above the relegation places then there will be questions but who else are they going to bring in that will do better? The new manager is starting from scratch whereas Hughton would have probably already identified some transfer targets.

Whoever comes in, without sounding too harsh Brighton are a bottom 6 club in the PL and I suspect both Norwich and either Leeds or Villa (if that turns out to be the playoff final) will fancy their chances of finishing above them, Sheffield United I'm not so sure.

They've been poor this calendar year but you'd have thought 17th in the PL would be enough to keep your job at Brighton. If the chairman senses a tailspin maybe he's right to freshen things up, but from the outside it's difficult to see what a new manager will get out of their squad that Chris Hughton couldn't.

Chris Hughton getting sacked is the "time is a flat circle" theory of English football.

It doesn't surprise me when it happens and I don't care enough to check when it doesn't.

Er well...someone else gets to take them down. Hughton will rebuild his reputation like he's always done, probably in the Championship. Have the Brighton big wigs actually seen their squad??? That, is what puts their status at risk. Unless they're planning to upgrade that bigly, they're living in La La land.

Don't think it's a bad move, it could backfire I suppose but plenty of teams have done it in the past and get better from doing it. The club looks flat and hasn't progressed at all, they're lucky there was 3 awful teams in the league this season. Looking at who's come up so far I think they'd of been in real trouble if they kept him around.

He spent 60m in the summer with a 56m net spend and they’ve gone 4 points backwards with their big money signing having a truly shite season. It’s completely fair enough that the chairman has lost his trust in him.

Plus people who keep saying “Have you seen their squad?” - Look at Bournemouth, Burnley and Newcastle. Their squads are also trash and they work on a similar budget.

Apart from Mathew Ryan who I actually rate highly as a keeper and Davy Propper who looks like a solid midfielder, can't say I agree with that comment.

Seems rather harsh. I would have thought he deserved another summer, but can't say I'm shocked either. Looks like Potter from Swansea is an overwhelming early favourite? What's he done to deserve this? Only did okay with Swansea. Granted I know he had an impressive time in Sweden.

Hughton's a little bit unlucky to get sacked but I think this is just the way modern football is now. They had a bad run from Christmas until the end of the season and most Premier League owners won't accept a run like that.

Brighton will see this as a preemptive move to avoid a relegation battle next season but they'll do well to find a manager who organises them as well as Hughton and plays on the front foot.

Madness, he's a decent manager and has done very well to give them 2 consecutive years of PL football after years in the wilderness. I don't get the thinking behind some decisions made in football these days.

Unlucky, but another club who think they can improve and probably feel his defensive-minded approach isn't going to achieve it.

He'll bag another job in the near future, and Brighton will get relegated.

Only ‘black’ manager in the PL walks. Feel for him. He’s gotten Newcastle and Brighton promoted in recent years and been rewarded with the sack both times.

I guess one of the merry-go-round managers of Allardyce, Redknapp, Pulis, Hughes and co will come in next.

Just about surviving in the PL is his ceiling and most clubs have ambitions above that.

It’s perfectly understandable.

Some managers should just be used as promotion specialists. Him, Warnock etc. The moment they get you promoted thank them for their services and find someone suited for the PL.

He was doing a lot more than that at Newcastle before they sacked him. He had them in a better position than their Messiah Benitez. Not only did they sack him, they sacked him for Alan Pardew, who had no greater pedigree at all.

3 wins in 23, very defensive minded approach.
Spent quite a lot this summer and didn't do well integrating the new signings.
Said to spend too little time training attacking patterns which turns a squad sour, and a fanbase bored.

He's done well, but it's understandibly the end of the road for him.
It's sink or swim time for Brighton, i feel it was the right move.
