I hope he does well for Roma, 9 years at the club, played 323 games, scoring 18 goals.

I liked Smalling. Thought he was a very good defender, shit on the ball but did his job better than the morons we have in his position now

Best of luck to him, delighted he got the move he deserves and hope he continues to do well in Italy

Good luck to him. Better defender than a lot of our current centre backs but prone to some serious brain farts himself, and his poor on the ball ability really limited him and the team’s ability to play the ball out. Thought Smojo wasn’t the worst post fergie pairing we’ve seen and he had a good partnership with Blind. I think he and Maguire would actually complement each other pretty well but clearly he’s not what the manager wants and he wants to play first team football regularly. Kept Harry Kane in his pocket regularly.

those times he played at right back were really something though.

I imagine he’ll continue to do well at Roma

Best of luck for him. Will be appreciated far more over there. Him and Evans are easily the best CBs we've had post Rio and Vidic.

Under a tree.
Shame hes gone, given our current defense, but the guy is really turning into a myth by some on here. 18m for him is a good deal

Has been the clubs best defender for most of his time here. Absolutely disgusting treatment from from a clown that will thankfully soon follow him out.

doubt that since we have not won the league after SAF. People going to see him as part of the post SAF mess.

Thanks for the service Chris, wonderful time with the club. In my opinion you should still be in the selection, certainly ahead of Phil fecking Jones.

Thank feck he got his move. Was worried he'd be wasting his own time here with us. Good luck Chris and hope you do well at Roma.

I am relieved to see the Board let him go. We are going to be saddled with more than enough unwanted players after this window. No need for any more.

Hope he has a good career with them. Id far rather have him around than certain others

What will it take to get rid of the true deadwood eg Jones et al

Happy that he has got the move. Always thought he was a good defender, reliable most of the time. His awkwardness on the ball probably made him somewhat a victim of the modern day approach to the game.
Think we have got a good price for him and best of luck to him in his adventure at Roma.

Is there any United fan on Earth who truly thinks we’d have been worse off just playing those first two together as a pair since the other two left rather than spending two hundred million quid on Rojo, Blind, Bailly, Lindelof and Maguire?

It’s not exactly been the worst area of the pitch during the malaise years, but if you add Keane in to the mix we’d probably have a better set of CBs right now in 2020 if we hadn’t bothered signing any at all in the last decade.

We sold our best defender. This club simply has no idea whatsoever. Good luck to him.

Wish him well, thought he got treated fairly poorly by our fans over the years but a good servant for us. Shame it didn't work out for us to keep him but got an ok fee for him at least.

Being told you're 4th choice CB and free to go to another club is disgusting treatment?

Rated him more than Evans and Jones but all 3 never got to the highest level or the level we wanted/needed. Wonder if SAF is disappointed by how they turned out as they were meant to be the future of our defence all those years ago?

Genuinely wish him well and he always seemed a decent bloke. Will always remember his performance against PSG away.

If we'd stuffed him out of that move I'd be more annoyed than not getting x player.

Least we could do for him.
