Adapting the Sil is nigh on impossible I think, though funnily enough his reading of the Odyssey actually fits its themes really well.

Amazing movie. Tom Holland, Anm Hathaway and Matt Damon were amazing.
I don't get the appeal of Zendaya. She is as one note as Jon Bernthal (but less awesome).

It's not going to happen for so many reasons
1) Tolkien Estate will never sell the rights
2) It's too long, with too many characters, the audience would absolutely get confused by 30 minutes in, trying to understand the difference between Finrod, Fingolfin, Finarfin, Finwe and Feanor. Then try differentiating the sons of Feanor.
3) That said, I think it's possible to do a sub-story from Silmarillion. Tale of Beren and Luthien, The fall of Gondolin or the Children of Hurin would work as a long feature epic.
Nolan is my favourite director, and I was hooked on Homer as a kid. This movie ought to have been amazing, just like so many reviewers proclaimed. I guess my expectations ruined it for me.

Given the success of this movie I’m surprised he doesn’t fancy having a crack at adapting The Iliad.
I’m always intrigued by the idea of someone adapting the Aeneid but it’d probably be too complicated.
Let casting do the work - some newbie, Hardy, Murphy, Branagh, Pattinson. Holland in a variety of wigs. Eru - Caine. All with American accents.
She's got some talent, but doesn't show it much in these big budget movies for some reason. The Euphoria special "Trouble Don't Last Always" was just her and Colman Domingo sat in a diner for an hour in a character study and it's one of the best performances I've seen for a while. I'd like to see her do a few smaller less action orientated movies.

Tolkien?! No thanks. I would love to see Nolan's interpretation on some of George RR Martin's work though.. A 3 hour epic about Aegon The Conquerer and his beast of a Dragon - Balerion would be absolutely mental haha OR about the Doom of Old Valyria..
Can't wait to see practical effects Dragons by getting up close shots of comodo dragons with children's butterfly wings attached and with roars produces by a muscle car. Aegon would be sitting on his throne having PTSD while regaling about the three different timelines he remembers of his story that all magically intersect at different points, only to conclude with a shot of him being born as if none of it actually happened yet.
i just saw it and it was really good. it's long but i never got bored. it's been a long while since i read the Illiad and the Odyssey so cant recall how accurate it is to those
I enjoyed it. It has very little in common with Homer's text, though. A complete departure, really. That's fine, it's meant to be an action film and just uses the original text as an inspiration / outline.
Should be giving van Nistelrooy a chance

I really wish I hadn't read The Odyssey. I think I would have enjoyed this film a lot more then. It strayed a little too far from the translation that I read.
The good:
- Honestly better than most of Nolan's stuff. Has to be said, seeing as I'm not his biggest fan.
- Great production value, as with all of Nolan's films.
- Beautiful locations.
- The action scenes, while a little chaotic at times, were great. I especially enjoyed the sequence where they opened the gates to Troy.
- I also like the sound the bow made when Odysseus plucked it
The bad:
- The Greek gods are barely involved! My wife even thought that Athena simply was a ghost "haunting" Odysseus because of that Troy scene near the end. And to be honest, I would have thought the same if I didn't know the story. The lack of gods completely changes the tone.
- Matt Damon is a great actor, but his Odysseus is a little too stoic for me. I would have preferred more personality. I also don't buy into his "philosophical" side.
- Speaking of personality: Tom Holland and Zendaya are so boring to watch. And I don't think that they are very good actors either.
- I know that Nolan likes his films grey and gritty, but I really think that this is the one film where he could have added some colors and flair. Oh well...
All in all an enjoyable experience that didn't feel like 3 hours at all.

I think what your wife understood is clearly implied and fits with Nolan's interpretation of the story.

B) Zendaya plays Athena in name only, but her character is actually just the "ghost" of the civilian
I assumed that it was option A and could live with that. Option B makes it a worse film in my opinion, because that truly removes all the gods from the story. Which is an odd decision, seeing as he kept all other supernatural aspects.
I do understand that it's very hard to include the gods while keeping the typical Nolan tone. And I was probably a fool for thinking that he would go out of his comfort zone. But interpretation A seemed like an acceptable compromise.

I don't think it's one or the other, I think it's voluntarily left open for interpretation. She's credited as Athena, but my impression was that she was also a manifestation of Odysseus's guilt-laden PTSD.
