Christopher Vivell | 25th Feb 2025: Appointed Director of Recruitment on permanent deal

He'll either get a new contract and a raise and promised a bit more responsibility (if that's possible) and stay or he'll go for a better job which happens in football all the time. The grinding negativity on here every day is hard going lads, seriously. Negative when we were signing Vivell negative when he might leave because other clubs want him because he's done a pretty good job and has a good reputation. Which is it?

There's no evidence to suggest that he's made a difference to our recruitment, so whatever.

Much rather that than those accepting eating up the plate of shite the Glazer's continuously serve us.
Honestly its tough to gauge what is bigger out of that and the absolute bullshit posters are putting here based on feck all.

If United have finished the summer transfer business then Vivell could move jobs and just do a few weeks freelancing for United every summer.

Win win!

Amazing the lengths Bayern will go to to sign our backup striker.

I will be furious if we lose him and replace with Wilcox however think it's a very realistic possibility

I can see us losing him to Bayern. Wilcox should have listened to him more. We should have signed Sangare instead of Baleba or Santos.

Where to start? He was at Chelsea when they signed Santos. He was also here when we signed Santos. He was here when we tried to sign Baleba last season and this season. We signed Sesko on his recommendation.

Why bother posting negative stuff just for the sake of it without having a bit of a check if what you're writing is totally wrong, on top of being needlessly negative?

Say it with me! we know feck all on here about what the staff do at the club behind the scenes and once more for the people in the back. We also don't know what kind of budget or restrictions the ownership have placed on the recruitment team. They could be doing the best job in the league getting us 3rd on a really strict budget last season and are possibly about to do it again this season for all we know. All while cutting costs

Let's just watch the football shall we?

I love how fans somehow know exactly what each individual member of the senior leadership thinks/wants.

Somehow they never seem to be on the same page according to fans, it's always X wants this player and Y wants that player and they have some sort of trial by combat to decide whose preferred target is purchased.

Will be gutted but don't blame him going somewhere he's listened to and not overruled by Wilcox

It's no big loss if he leaves IMO. I've assessed his work somewhat over the years. There's plenty of very capable heads of recruitment already within the Premier League that could be brought to the club imo.

I think it's important to realise that there isn't only one person within a recruitment structure who has some unique code to unearthing talent. When you as a collective football structure follow a plan that is centred and aligned with a view to playing proactive attacking football, where playing the game in the opponent's half in a high line is a requirement, then the recruitment will follow. Because the strategy will then dictate the requirements for each position on the pitch and what is required in possession as far as the build up quality and verticality is concerned along with what the requirements are as far as managing space is concerned.

It's pretty clear to me that the signings are being made without having a defined way of playing a attacking brand of football. Data analytics can only help if you first know what you're applying the data to.

This is the most ridiculous trend I've seen on here. Every transfer decision that the person likes is credited to Vivell. Every transfer decision the person doesn't like is blamed on Wilcox.

All completely fabricated out of thin air with zero evidence.

This I had even seen Sesko being credited to Vivell when Club infact have been tracking his progress for god knows how many years .

Vivell was recruitment chief at Salzburg when Sesko arrived there, and at Leipzig when Sesko then arrived there. We might have been 'tracking' Sesko for years but obviously when we brought in Sesko, Vivell would have been intrumental in it since he has been buying Sesko for years, not just 'tracking'.
Generally though I agree, Vivell is director of recruitment so it's nonsensical to only attribute part of the transfer activity to him.

Santos was probably also his idea, but before him, there were reports of us being interested in Sangare. Maybe the stories are fabricated by the media, I don't know. And I didn't say they never listen to him. I am pretty confident that Sesko was one he pushed through, despite the long interest we've had in him. We also were heavily linked to Nagelsmann because he is a friend of Vivell.

United tried to buy Sesko several times before he finally landed here so no he wasn't Vivell's target he just happened to be here and on board when we did buy him .

It seems like so far his greatest input has been identifying players he has signed for former clubs like Sesko and Santos. Whether the reason he doesn’t ‘appear’ to have added much is else is unknown. Is he all he’s cracked up to be or is he hampered by the higher ups? I know where my money would go.

I think if he does leave it's more the message it sends about the team, not necessarily his ability.

It will be interesting to see the ins and outs post all of this. I don't think there's full alignment on recruitment, due to the varying profiles we targeted this summer. On the LB, I can only imagine Hall was the only one they could all agree on, which is a concern if our budget is tight.

I agree on the last paragraph, I think we're accumulating good players, but I'm not sure they all fit in a defined way of playing yet - there's too many gaps. Maybe that's the plan, until next season when they feel they've addressed each area of the pitch.

Oh well, thats it then. Adnan from the Internet has assessed him and its not good news guys.

He's got to go.

I don't think that's what hes saying though. He's saying there's lots of heads of recruitment within the league that have just as good of a track record.

look, it’s easy to watch academy football or lower league football and see who stands out. we’ve got loads of scouts (lammens being recommended by coton,) who are constantly feeding back to vivell, as are the data teams. if he really wants to earn his money, he needs to be recruiting from outside the sector. if he was really good at his job he’d be looking at binmen or scaffolders and seeing who could be a good premier league footballer.

I see some of you have been reading the hysterical fan accounts on Twitter.

Because mu'h reasons innit

This conjecture that Wilcox is leading Vivell instead of the other way round is based purely because we signed players the poster doesn't like and they also don't like Wilcox for some reason so 2+2=4
I do often wonder how so many on here can so confidently declare that current members of the backroom staff are "geniuses" or "clowns", for example, when we have almost no insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

The Jason Wilcox thread is full of scathing critiques when we're two games into the season. It's all rather frustrating because whenever you point out any of the good decisions made by the club whilst he was director of football, of course they were down to luck rather than judgement and Wilcox had nothing to do with them!
