Clubs you wish were back in the top flight

AFC Wimbledon are Wimbledon. Half my family are fans and have been since before I was born.
Well that's just not true.

How do you / they account for the fact that Wimbledon FC were still playing league games in 2002/3 and 2003/4, while AFC Wimbledon had already been formed and playing matches themselves since 2002?

They are categorically two different clubs. One formed by fans of the other, hence the 'spiritual' continuation. Some of their fans might like to think of themselves as a continuation of the old Wimbledon FC. But they are not a legal continuation at all. Interested how you account for them both playing at different levels of the pyramid at the same time for those two years if they're the same club?

It was a horrible, complicated, unprecedented time when the club was being ripped from the fans.

The following, mostly for nostalgic reasons:

Blackburn
Bolton
Charlton
Coventry
Derby
Boro
Pompey
Sheffield Wednesday

That's true.

But so is the fact that Wimbledon FC were still playing in the second tier in 2002/3 and 2003/4. While the newly formed AFC Wimbledon (in 2002) were playing games during those two seasons in the Combined Counties League Premier Division.

So just how can they claim to actually be Wimbledon FC when they were already formed and playing games for two years while Wimbledon FC were still in existence and doing so as well.

It's 100% a fact that they're two different clubs. The rest is just all about wanting to be a spiritual continuation, or rewriting history and lying if they're claiming to actually be Wimbledon FC.

Nah. Wimbledon are Wimbledon, complicated history included.

Definitely AFC Wimbledon, mainly because of Dave Beasant and being friends with his two sons at school, id love them to enjoy that and I think Dave would love it too.

Preston NE being one of the first grounds I ever went to and the Football Museum and one team that should be because I love history, Notts County, be amazing to see a rivalry between them and Forest.

Stoke, but only if they're a shithouse team again. Miss having a team like that around, there's no equivalent now and it's all a bit homogenous. In that sense it could almost be anyone. We had Big Sam teams and Hughes' Blackburn that could be a bit that way too but not as much.

Best thing about Stoke was that they'd trouble the other top teams more than they did us, loved how they seemingly got under our rivals skin more than they did ours. Feckers would probably beat us now but I really enjoyed some of our hard fought wins there. Pulis and SAF good mates too, Sir Alex advised him to turn their stadium into a fortress when they came up and he certainly listened.

For actual clubs Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Blackburn and Bolton.

I'd probably go for Northampton Town.

I developed a soft spot for them when I was younger and they were right at the bottom of the football league. That's carried on nowadays to some degree, though I've stopped making sure I went to watch them either home or away at least once a season in recent years.

I also liked the stat that they went all the way up the leagues to the top tier almost in consecutive seasons, and then all the way back down to the bottom tier almost in consecutive seasons. All within 10 years!

So I think they've only ever had one year in the top flight - but that's still one more than another team that have got a few mentions here, so at least Northampton qualify for the thread.

I just want a real shithouse club to go up and play in an overly physical and aggressive manner like Stoke, Wimbledon, etc did.

… just not Leeds.

Sheffield Wednesday
Middlesborough
Bolton
Blackburn
Oldham

The more northern teams, the better.

Some good shouts in here that I agree with and clearly heavily biased by the legacy they already have from prior stints at the top level...ill go with the 3 s clubs

Schalke
Sheffield Wednesday
Sampdoria

I'm a Barclays boy.

Bolton, Portsmouth and Blackburn should all be top flightm
Same. Plus Wigan and Swansea were okay. Don't care much about Sunderland (think it's partly due to last day of 2011/12) or Watford, Stoke, Hull. Middlesbrough coming back would be nice because of Carrick.

Would not take Leeds back now they're further contaminated with that plastic red bull sheight.

In other leagues, I'd permanently boot out sportswashing and redbull type company teams and give their places to teams from 1992, like Notss County, Bari, Le Havre and Unterhaching

Probably a post more for the "Weird feelings of football" thread but I feel like Sunderland always had lots of litter on their pitch. A Barclays memory is lots of plastic bags swirling around their pitch.

Won't be a popular one after May 2012 but Sunderland currently have some of the best youngsters outside the prem playing for them in the U.K.

Would also come up with 45k fanbase and the reintroduction of one of the more interesting derbies around so you'd like to think they could be a bit more interesting than Sunderland and Ipswich's pitiful efforts.

I said a while back the most interesting three to come up would be Leeds, Sunderland and Coventry but Sunderland had a poor run so very unlikely to make 2nd now.

I think Portsmouth is one for me. After all the hard ship they went through, to come back to the top flight would be an amazing story.

They give the entire Darwen End to away teams. Used to buzz off a Blackburn away.
In the old stand with the tin roof it was loud you couldn't hear yourself think, it was so low the sound just reverberated round, and if it was raining you needed ear plugs!

I reckon Sunderland wouldn’t be much better than how Sunderland would be personally

Not quite the question you asked but here is my ideal premiership line up. Yes I have a spreadsheet.

Man United
Man City
Liverpool
Everton
Newcastle
Sunderland
Arsenal
Tottenham
Chelsea
Palace
Sheff United
Sheff Wednesday
Nottingham Forest
Derby County
Ipswich
Norwich
West Ham
Leeds
Middlesbrough
Southampton

Sheff Wed.

Don't really care about anyone else but I miss Wednesday being a top flight club.

Chris Waddle. Chris Bart-Wiliams. David Hirst. Des Walker. Mark Bright.

Those were the days

Do you also have a points table for your ideal first season?

It's a good table. I'd personally throw out Sheffield United (too many teams from Sheffield) and throw in either Bolton or Blackburn, can't decide which one.

Time travel. Like when there were two Marty McFlys running around in 1955

The mum and dad not realising who he is back in the future always confused me.

Bit of a plot-hole there and when I watch movies about flux-capacitor driven product placement time-travel, realism is a dealbreaker for me.

Wow. Not one mention for Birmingham City.

Are you Neil Danns in disguise?

Just not very notable for me. Annoying fans, the football wasn't the best under Bruce, not much longevity/success and lacking in memorable or likable players that I'd really associate with the club.

I think Robbie Savage from that era for them first of all and he was a bit of a knob. Seb Larrson more of a Sunderland guy, Pennant a bit of an idiot, Forsell did well for them but mostly when he was on loan, Heskey had a good season but he's Leicester/Liverpool. It's mostly randos like Kenny Cunningham and Clinton Morrison.

Maik Taylor seemed alright I suppose.

They'll always have the League Cup final win against Arsenal which was hilarious but that's not the league.

Huddersfield, Luton & Portsmouth. Save us from relegation one more year.

On the romantic front though, I'd go Wednesday, Charlton and Blackburn, for different nostalgic reasons.

Boro and Sunderland are two teams that I feel like belong in the top flight.

Sheffield Wednesday too even though it's been well over 20 years
