Cole Palmer | Chelsea Player

We should have the new stadium by 2029/2030 perfect time to go all out and bring 25 year old Cole Palmer to his beloved United.

I think characterising footballers as dim is often unfounded. It used to be a cliché that footballers weren’t bright - I have come to believe that this was some kind of weird therapy for fans who could take solace in the fact that they wanted something to have over these very well paid young men who are mostly from working class backgrounds.

While their formal education will have been disrupted it doesn’t mean they don’t have intelligence. Rooney was an incredibly intelligent player on the pitch. While that doesn’t translate to scholarly insight, it does indicate an underlying sense of intelligence. Palmer is also a clever footballer.

We know very little about these players yet we’re very quick to label them.
To be fair it depends, Cryuff was a player and probably had close or outright genius intellect, same applies to most great managers like our own sir Alex or pep as of now.

Some are clearly dumb.

(To clarify I was meaning in general not about Palmer in particular)

He did an ‘interview’ on Sky Sports, good grief, he’s a painful watch, so Cole why did you choose Yamal as the most skillful player……he’s just got it ain’t he…thanks for that insight Cole, what about Mainoo in 2nd…..he’s a baller in he…

Good player but my god he’s a bit dim.

To be fair, I do understand him. There are some players you look at and they just have 'it'. It might be a little difficult to express exactly what the 'it' is in straightforward terms but we all know what he means

Was like pulling teeth, the guy asking the questions must be used to it though.

A lot of the time when people talk about players being thick I tend to think it's more just a lad being shy speaking in front of a camera.

The media can make them seem a bit stupid by asking them things they've no reason to know about.

Cole Palmer is hardly scouring the globe for skilful young talent, and why the feck does it matter to him what a Bergkamp is? Whereas when Maddison gets an interview you tend to see them ask about the things he does on the pitch, which he can answer well.

Also this. Probably mostly this.

I find the arrogance and ignorance that comes along with discussions of intelligence with regard to footballers incredibly irksome.

Droning on about whether player A or B is thick neither makes it so or reflects well nor considers how many footballers have their formal education disrupted or even that having a degree isn’t the be all end all of intelligence. It also displays intellectual snobbery and carries the assumption those denigrating are smarter than those they’re deriding.

"Intelligence" is a hard thing to nail down. I have a colleague who is clearly very clever, probably one of the best at his job I've met at his age (especially the technical bits). He isn't a great communicator, and you wouldn't think he's as clever as he is.

Again, Simpson’s nailed it

Exactly.

I think it’s easy to forget that being in front of a camera being interviewed isn’t a natural or comfortable thing for most people.

Being a fantastic football doesn’t mean you’re suddenly going to be an amazing public speaker or lose any natural shyness you have.

indeed, and in regards to anyone actually

Correct - most people just wouldn't do it. Good natural public speakers are rare and it's a real skill which takes a lot to learn.

It’s not even about being in front of a camera, the reason they give stupid answers is because they get stupid questions about repetitive topics at an unusual frequency. An actor might do a 2 month burst of 20 interviews across different media and of different lengths to promote a film, and then go dark for months. Football has media exposure every other day, it’s mostly on tv, mostly in short bursts and live, and they’re mostly asked the same questions and expected to recycle the same tropes over and over again. Nothing about the format or frequency is designed to allow them to be expressive, thoughtful or interesting. And they all get extensive media training that teaches them how to fit in that narrow box. Expecting people to sound intelligent while performing in that circus act is absurd.

He's over performing his xG by nearly 3 goals, but his xA is 9 and only 6 goals came from chances he created...

He's a cut above the rest of our attackers...

Only three players in the league have taken more corners this season than him.
Yet he has zero goal creating actions from set pieces. Our corner routines have been poor all season; we don't create many shots from corners and it's increasingly becoming an issue.

Where did you get that? If you had single shot from those corners it counts a chance, you are not saying neither of his 64 corners hit your man?

Welp just realised that the stat I posted just says basically the same thing as the tweet - though I'd point out that you can see in the screenshot he is at 0 goal creating actions from dead ball passes and this goes back 365 days, not just since the start of December. In terms of shot creation, set pieces account for ~20% of the total Palmer generates.

So the takeaway is that not only have his fellow attackers let him down in terms of their finishing, blame can also go to the defenders who keep wasting opportunities.

I really don't understand what you wanted to argument here, I am sorry.

Hasn’t he got a pretty honking record against the top sides in the league this season

He is still young. Learning to play against the top sides can take some time. Lots of adjusting to do.

His form has definitely dipped but then it would be a suprise if it didn’t at some stage. The other thing to consider is that teams are specifically trying to take him out of games now.

Some broader context for his so-called loss of form...

Do you two think there's a good chance of Chelsea trying to sign one of the bigger name CF's in the summer like Osimhen or Gyokeres with this in mind? I thought Jackson had a good start to this season but seems like he's gone off the boil again with his finishing - was in the top 3 last year for CF's with the worst goals to xG ratio in the league and he's back there again this year at the moment.

Depends on how the rest of the season goes I suppose. I believe in Jackson, but after this season he's had 2 full seasons as the starting striker. Maybe he deserves more time. I'd probably lean towards giving him that (what's the point in signing unproven, inexperienced young talent if not to give them enough rope to develop into the potential the club believed they have). We want him to be that reliable steady source of goals throughout the season. At the moment he's giving us purple patches. We are at the stage though, where just a sprinkle of experienced high end talent can make a humongous difference for us. Doesn't have to be a striker Could be a a GK (Kobel?) and a CB (Bastoni?).

I think it's pretty unlikely given the focus on younger players on lower wages. Liam Delap feels a lot more likely.
