Cristiano Ronaldo - 968/1000

United has nothing to do with it. We have had players miss league games for getting sent off in friendlies ffs.

Madrid also likely have nothing to do with it.

FIFA just want football’s biggest star playing every game. It’s wrong but it is what it is.
I agree with what you said about fifa wanting him to play. Although I should add that from my experience watching football the big clubs (including those who got rich in the last 20 years) tend to get lesser punishments. Sometimes a big deal is made though to make the higher ups look like they do punishment the big clubs consistently like they do the lesser clubs. Just my observations. I think some big clubs get it more than others though.

Confirmed.

"Violent conduct normally carries a three-match ban but Ronaldo has had the second and third matches suspended for a year.

BBC Sport understands that the fact it was his first red card in 226 international appearances was taken into account.

Ronaldo sat out the match against Armenia on 16 November so will not miss any games in the United States next summer.

A Fifa statement said: "If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension set out in the disciplinary decision shall be deemed automatically revoked and the remaining two matches must be served immediately."

Farcical!

One rule for Ronaldo, one rule for everybody else!

I can't ever remember another player getting such special treatment!

I honestly thought that it was parody or something...

Remember when Rooney got banned for swearing, causing him to miss our semi final against City. Has that happened to any other player ever?

Or when Scholes got a red card in a pre season friendly that meant he missed premier league games? The answer is no

There isn’t another player out there who’d get away with that. I look forward to his cult crying about conspiracies as they’ve done endlessly since 2022. The real losers here are Portugal though, now they’ll have to indulge him right from the start

In a land where he’s just kissed up to the most bent administration there’s ever been, who are hosting the tournament, who have the ear of arguably the most bent FIFA boss, you genuinely believe he’s going to get a three match ban?

Would be surprised if he misses a WC game.
I mean, I thought people would be hip to this materialising. Surprised it’s a shock to anyone.

Are you at the point where your joints will occasionally give you a little "Heh, I'm not going to break right now but do that same movement one more time and I'm gonna hilariously feck you up." yet?
Yup, and I groan every time I stand up or sit down.

Rooney and Scholes both were sent off in the same friendly against Porto. Rooney got a harsh straight red and Scholes got two yellow cards. Both missed the 3 league games after the 5-1 win over Fulham on the opening day of 2006/07:

An absolute farce.
Ah yeah, Rooney as well. I remember Scholes being especially bullshit as it was for 2 yellows rather than a straight red. When has that ever resulted in a 3 match ban for the competition you're playing in? Let alone ones you aren't!

Random post, but imo all big clubs and countries are cheating and/or getting significant help from authorities in football. I include the team in my name in that too. It is very sad but I am mostly apathetic about it these days. Fans of smaller clubs who complain about it would at best be apathetic about it or defensive over it if they got more money and benefited too.

Yip. Just waiting for his PR person to show up in this thread and explain how this was a totally fair and justified decision, and how we're all wrong for daring to oppose the great Ronaldo.

Actually really curious how long his ban will be. It's a textbook straight red for violent conduct that should be at least 2 games and I assume Portugal will easily top the group (basically just need a draw against Armenia).
But I just can't imagine FIFA allowing their golden boy to miss the first match at the world cup.
Well, unsurprisingly they indeed had to act.
What a farcial decision, never heard of a probationary period for bans in football. Pretty amusing how FIFA bein corrupt is so normalized that this won't even be bigger news.

Great news, nobody wants to see the best players of all time not playing in the World Cup
If that player has done something to make them deservedly missing out on games, then hell yeah I'll happily see the WC happen without them. Their skill has no bearing on whether or not I think the rules should apply to them the same they do to everyone else.

That goes especially if that player is way past their "best players of all times" days and just a shadow of their former self who drags down their NT's performance.

Will probably cost them in the long run as their team play will be hindered by being forced to accommodate a nearly 41 year old Ronaldo lumbering around stinking up the place.

I had to go back and watch what happened but I think it's fair. It was very funny at the time but not a hugely violent act and to be honest I think a one match ban is enough for this kind of thing. If this helps change FIFA's own rules then I'm all for it as frankly a three match ban for a red is overkill a lot of the time. Same as Gueye last night.

No doubt FIFA are showing themselves to be as transparent as feck of course.

So Ronaldo visits Trump with Infantino to meet the most corrupt politician. Is anyone surprised that FIFA suddenly make an exception for him? The games gone. Corruption rules

What a goal!
I don't think we can do worse now with this 40 year old striker than our current ones who just can't seem to put the ball into back of the net. ETH should be the one that go instead of him.

Wonder what special favours he did for Trump in the White House…

Open season for all the players involved in the play offs now. They should be able to go in two footed or elbow whoever they like and get away with it. It will be very interesting if someone does get a straight red for violent conduct.

Can understand why FIFA made the decision... but it is absolutely bang out of order in regards to the rules and other players.. just so they can have Ronaldo there playing. Corrupt as they come..

Id say there might be a few complaints from other teams with players missing games due to suspensions. A few elbows in the back being thrown about in the playoffs too.

On the other hand , have you seen some of the prices being floated for game tickets? madness.. in a country where football isnt their main sport, they prob know they need the biggest draw to sell tickets.

If there’s a time or person to create one rule for, I’m fine with it being either Ronaldo or Messi at this stage of their careers in what is almost certain to be their last World Cup.
In fact I think I think it’s a joke that suspensions count going into tournaments.

I’d be pretty fecking peeved if Michael Jordan for instance missed the first two games of his last Olympics.

Now if he elbows someone in the tournament then there’s no escaping the rule book for that.

He'll probably escape suspension given that it would be his first ever red card in 23 World Cup games. Something that must be taken into account.

The precedent that’s been set now is dangerous. If you’re a star player with a tournament coming up and an opposition player is annoying you, is that now your chance to have a free hit on them?

Say what you like, but what Ronaldo did to the Ireland playing constitutes the definition of assault.

Will Otamendi and Caicedo be given similar reprieves?

I mean, he’s gonna stink the joint up cause he can’t hack it at that level anymore so I’d be fine without him. Portugal players probably also feel the same way.
