Missed an easy chance, yet he had a great header.
You can say whatever you want about him, yet he always had drive and quite some timing in his carreer, so before starting the WC to dismiss him, it's silly no matter stats and perfomances in prior ones.
Even if he ends playing badly, he deserves that credit and also, Portugal has some great names, yet no real pressure and quite negative vibes surrounding him, so he'll fuel with that.
Had a horror show against Nigeria. Missed sitters and then laughed it off. Portugal aren't going to make it past the group stage with him starting. He has to do his country a favor and retire gracefully or at least not start.

It's a sad state of affair. He carried them for so long, but now they have some really good players capable of going all the way and they're all forced to carry him for charity sake. It's right now a 10 vs 11 in all games they play. He could still play a role as an impact sub for 20mins and help Portugal progress but his ego won't allow him. It's him ahead of the country.

Somehow Goncalo Ramos manages to be even worse. They don't have many options even if they decide to move on.

This is the biggest problem. So many options in all the other positions and then you have G. Ramos. Felix did look sharp yesterday tbh. Could be an option up front.
He would be an ideal weapon for Portugal coming on in games when they need a late goal but his ego will never allow it.

I'd have Portugal as favourites if they had a proper striker. Instead they have a lad who should have retired and a Goncalo Ramos.

I dislike Ronaldo as a human being immensely, but I actually think him being in a position to miss those chances offers encouragement. He doesn't look half as crooked as he did a few weeks ago.

Have you seen their group? And also keep in mind, that some 3rd place teams qualify. the whole group stage is almost a farce for a top 30 team.
Martinez knows Ronaldo could easily put pressure on him to be sacked if he doesn't keep him happy, he's no interest in dropping him regardless of performances.

Ronaldo is not a King or Sheik for Man City trying to influence how the team is run, I have no reason to believe why he can pressure a manager to picking him against a managers will.
Look how Tuchel stayed strict and left Maguire and TAA at home when they were some of the best English players in their prime but chose weaker players to take to the world cup to fit his system.

I think Jaoa Felix has looked good in the warm up matches more than both Ronaldo & Ramos - maybe Portugal can use him like how Havertz is played for Arsenal but honestly Martinez is a manager who has always been out of his depth in professional football.

The pressure comes from Ronaldo being the greatest Portuguese player of all time and, most importantly, his previous diva-like attitude kicking up a massive stink when he has been left out of teams in the past. Do you not remember the end of his second stint here? Or the fuss when he got dropped in previous WC?

They still need to score goals to progress. If Ronaldo keeps missing sitters like yesterday, he's going to make it hard for them. Congo, Uzbek etc are going to fight in this stage. A cavalier attitude to the world cup is the worst thing that can happen to a team.
I think even Ronnie at this stage can score goals against them with the service he gets.
Still, it's DR Congo and Uzbekistan(sp?). Portugal will manage to advance, no matter what team they field.
