Cristiano Ronaldo - 976/1000 | Football only

Just seen those clips of that IshowSpeed fella acting like a relative just died at the end of that Portugal game there.. then lashing out at any argentina fan outside the ground..

absolute cringeworthy stuff. Hes the epitome of everything thats bad about the internet Player FC type these days.. Absolutely hated seeing him wearing United gear during that ronaldo second stint with us

Not sure why Ronaldo of all people would be considered a patron saint of the manosphere movement.

Half the time he's bawling his eyes out.

The key players in that movement are extremely fragile and often have tears in their eyes from comments about any slight criticism of their appearance in their chat.

Manliness isn’t the burly, sullen archetype that it was before. In 2026, it’s chiseled looks (along with the creams/gels and necessary preening to get there), unbridled arrogance and air of superiority over women.

The arrogance and ego is key, and that’s where the connection lies I feel.

Thats mental. I had read this about this tournament, and that the Cape Verde Keeper even had more dribbles than him.... Hadnt realised it covered the last WC aswell
A statistic his fans are gladly overlooking. The other one I saw here, that showcased how useless he was, is the one that stated, that he was the player with the most shots, who didn’t create a single chance for his teammates.
There’s also the one that showed how good the service was, that he received from his teammates.

Somehow, they all get ignored by his fans.

He also has 1 goal in the knockout rounds in 6 WCs and it was a pen.
Portugal arent great but Ronaldo hasnt really turned up at the big stage for them.

Mbappe has been incredible. I was surprised how great he has been for France in the WC.

I am biased.. He was a united player.. also, I prefer his style of play over Messi.. but I think that debate is pretty much over now..

The cl and league are a better gauge of who is better between messi and Ronaldo. Ronaldo has more goals and assists but messi isn't far behind and messi probably has more motm awards and better stats for dominating the whole pitch and game, as well as dribbles and tracking back.

Imo if messi focused on goals as much as Ronaldo he would have scored more like he did in 2012. Messi was better imo, but over the last 40 years Ronaldo is perhaps third behind messi and Maradona.

This is ridiculous believing you are right for your views and judging people by who they value. Its as daft as comparing ones religion and judging them by who they follow.

I'm not Portuguese, but anyone in Portugal would tell you that Ronaldo help kick-start Portugal as a complete footballing country; you see players and normal people from all countries inspired him; Portuguese players worship him because both the Portuguese league & national team would have been progressing much slower if they never had him at all and relying on the likes of Nani and Quaresma as their best players.

I saw Portugal supporter YouTube video yesterday asking if he was dissapointed that Ronaldo held back his country in this world cup - he replied; no because no one talked about how the Portuguese team held back Ronaldo for a decade in his prime playing in the WC.

Ronaldo is one of the top 2-5 players of all time.. Can you imagine what that means to a country of people that has never had a player to that level before? Before people say Eusabio - no I'm sorry Eusabio, Deco, Rui Costa, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Neves and many other Portuguese won't ever reach his level & I don't think Portugal will ever have a player as good as Ronaldo; Portugese fans know this already whilst others do not & wonder why he has such a fanbase when they spend so much time observing a player that has given them so much joy.

Were Portugal fans booing Ronaldo during every WC game for holding his team back whilst only American fans ever celebrated when seeing him for the first time? The vast majority of Portugal love Ronaldo, though I don't know how this world cup changes it but after people forget about this world cup I'm sure things will return back to normal if Ronaldo retires.

You may not like his attitude, but it won't really matter because unfortunately no matter what we do, we are simply not capable of being as successful as him in real life. It's sad but it's true; alot of us are not as successful in life as Ronaldo even if we are much nicer people. That's why some people like his mentality and some people don't.
I suppose in principle you are right, that judging people solely by who they value is not an ideal stance. However, I didn't mean that I automatically dislike anyone who likes Ronaldo, though I do think it is fair to point out that it is an indication of what they value.

An example of this is in your post, and is a common refrain among Ronaldo 'fans' or defenders. "You're just jealous because he is more successful than you will ever be". I always find this a bit of a weird thing to say. Sure, I will never be as good at football as him, nor will I ever have as much money, but I know I wouldn't trade places with him, and I think lots of others wouldn't. I guess people just have different ideas of a 'successful' life.

And that Portuguese supporter you mention just shows another problem people have with Ronaldo. As if the world owes him anything. "his country team held him back". Fecking hell.

There's a conversation to be had about why Ronaldo doesn't seem to be as well loved by his international team mates as Messi is.

That same egoistic self-interested drive that has got Ronaldo where he has just rubs off the wrong way to other people. Rafael Leao say guy doesn't talk to anyone if he doesn't score in a game.

People will put up with it if he's doing the business, but he played in this WC like how you'd imagine a 41 year old who has played in Saudi Arabia for the past 3 years plays. There's probably a few in the Portuguese team who're (understandably to me) thinking, "yeah you're a legend but you're doing feck all in games now" and resenting his presence in the team.

Messi, on the other hand, has better playmaking ability. Everyone loves a playmaker more than that striker who expects people to be creating chances for them.

Messi at 39 is also far better than Ronaldo at 39 (now it's not even worth comparing). And that's despite Ronaldo doing everything in his power not to age.

... it's almost like Messi is just the better player

100% but in his defence it's not him. He has been co-opted by the podcast/alpha / discipline bros. He's an unwitting poster boy, not that he ever pushes back.
I don’t know. He seems to dwell in those spaces a little lately. Jordan Peterson, Elon Musk (I think) etc

Reading comments on social media regarding anything related to Ronaldo or Portugal is quite amusing. It’s like a race to see who can praise Ronaldo the most.

It’s basically the football version of Fox News and and Trump.

Which trophies? A fluked Euro 2016 where Portugal won only 1 game vs Wales and he was neither the top scorer nor the best player? Or is it the glorified friendlies i.e nations league?

I find the exaggerations of Ronaldo's contributions really annoying. There isn't a single world cup in which he played well individually. His goal record for Portugal is largely due to statpadding vs the likes of Albania and Estonia.

Satnev, look - no ill intentions from my side with my reply here.

I'm sorry you're in shock that a portuguese dude like me would be happy we actually won an international trophy, finally, and for recognising Ronaldo played a part in that, alongside everyone else. You're overinterpreting a simple post from me.

I can't begin to reply to you on a deeper level when you can't remember the game against Hungary in group phase in Euro 2016.

We were out of the Euros 3 times during that match. Someone named Ronaldo showed up 3 times to give us a lifeline that match when we were in the dirt.

It's normal if you don't remember. It's normal that most of Portuguese people do. It's normal for us to recognise his part in our success.

I think it's normal you forget that match, as I said. That performance would be a career highlight for most top flight footballers. For him, it was just a great performance, that got buried and forgotten about because he had another 50 games where we was even better.

I've heard it called someone's "taste in people", and it's relevant and tells you something about someone and whether you're likely to get along/have similar values.

I also find the jealousy argument bizarre.

I was just here on the thread thanking him for what he gave to our footballing country, but even I have to make a meme out of this.

Critics in 2004: "he's just a show pony who dribbles for nothing"

Ronaldo after 37: "0 dribbles". None whatsoever.

Ronaldo on a random TV interview in 3 years time: "see, they just like criticising, I never dribbled that much, EVER! I even spent YEARS without dribbling anybody!!"

Someone I knew from school (grown man) who is pro conspiracy, Farage, manosphere, etc was celebrating Messi missing the pen on social media because he didn’t want him to go further than Ronaldo in the WC.

I do remember the Hungary game and it was the only game in which he impressed.
That was a very jammy tournament win and Ronaldo himself, Hungary game apart, wasn't really good.

Downplaying Ronaldos Euros to discredit him is as silly as Ronaldo downplaying the world cup to discredit Messi.

That was Ronaldos Euros regardless of what happened in the final, he was their best player up until the injury.

Yeah, Euros win was a fantastic achievement and he is right to be proud of it. Keane didn’t play in one of our own biggest ever games, and he was still absolutely vital to the success.

Great response.

It’s a ridiculously sour argument anyway. Maybe it’s testament to what Ronaldo has achieved because I’ve never heard anyone who has been part of a successful team be discredited from that success. From mediocre players like John O’Shea to great players like Ronaldo.

You could equally state that Rooney wasn’t important to United’s league and CL double in 07/08 since he only scored one goal in the knockout steps of the tourni and he only hit 7 goals after the turn of the year in the league.

Or that Rooney was a disgrace, a joke, pathetic on the World Cup stage as he scored 1 (ONE) World Cup goal in his entire life. That’s as many as Peter Crouch, Emile Heskey, Matthew Upson and one less than John Stones managed. Ronaldo scored 3 times as many at 41 and Rooney looked like a 63 year old at 31.

But rational people wouldn’t do that since the bigger picture is that Rooney was a great player deserving of the credit and the shine that the collective achieved.

Messi and Ronaldo polemicists take things way too far, it's not even worth debating some of these takes as none of it is true or objective.

The Euros I can understand but the Nations league ‘champions’ having any real meaning is stretching it a bit. It’s like claiming a charity shield as a major trophy. It comes across as very insecure.

No one can downplay the world cup especially if the said player is the driving force for the victory and the player of yhe tournament.

Ronaldo was not good in that tounament apart from the Hungary game and if 3rd placed teams did not qualify, they wouldn't even have made it out of the group stages. That Euro win was jammy as F. And beyond his contribution vs Hungary, Ronaldo wasn't the driving force for Portugal's win.

I am guessing now he goes on hiatus for Portugal in nations league (will be more focusing on Saudi league to get closer to 1000) and then as Euro 2028 approaches we will see if the next manager in relents to pressure and picks him. Or decides that should be it for his international career.

My other wild theory is Ronaldo might feasibly slow down or even take some time off like Serena Williams as I bet deep down he's thinking he could play at 2030 World Cup and score his 1000 goal there to finally end his career.

Mentality like that though and Portugal will get as close to winning World Cup as this one and 2022 e.g. not very close at all.

Or maybe he just takes the sensible move finally and announces his international retirement in the next week or two.

Was there any post match reaction or was it just radio silence?

Was Ronaldo really that good at that Euros? That was back when he was actually an amazing player. I don’t remember him being amazing throughout that tournament in general, though.

He was very good in the Wales game, brilliant header to break deadlock in tight game. Can't judge final with injury after 20 minutes or whatever. Did find it funny him being assistant manager on touchline and piggybacking Santos at final whistle.

I'm struggling to remember too much in the Poland and Croatia games. Those were just tight low chance creation matches so not like he was dribbling through half the defence and teammates were missing open goals. In the groups where Portugal drew all three he didn't score against Iceland or Austria.

The one tournament game where he did replicate his club status was the 3-3 v Spain in 2018. A masterclass of a performance that night. Also scored v Morocco so that was his last major tournament at his peak imo.

Personally I think all the insults are childish. Hes not perfect (who is ?) but probably one of the top 5 footballers that have ever lived and has been totally dedicated to his game in terms of work/preparation/diet. What the hell have you ever done ?
He hasn't defended Mason Greenwood on this forum like you have, I can tell you that much.

Haaland has 7 world cup goals, do you think it's possible that he could overtake Ronaldo in this world cup?

Lukaka has 8 WC goals and it would be amazing to see a hatrick from him, and then he would leapfrog over Ronaldo

Harry Kane has left Ronaldo in the dust and let's not even mention Messi and Mboppe.

In the light of these comparisons how do people view Ronaldo as a World Cup great? Top 10?

He's not a WC great, and most of his goals have been pens ,free kicks, random tap-ins or keeper errors.

Well scoring free kicks is actually quite hard, but he only scored one, and it was his best WC goal. The only good one from that overrated match against Spain. Other than that, definitely not a WC great.

Haaland and Kane's records have been incredible. I read that all 7 of Haaland's goals were open play goals. If that's right, then Haaland in 5 matches at this tournament alone has matched Cristiano Ronaldo's career worth of non-penalty goals at the world cup. 7 each.

Kane has done more than just score. Im pretty sure he's in the top 10 in terms world cup goal contributions, and he'll add to it this tournament and next.

Messi is simultaneously the all time goals record holder, most assists, and most KO stages goal contributions holder but Mbappé is hot on his heels and will be the top all time scorer before long.
