Thing is, a proper coach and current Ronaldo are more or less mutually exclusive at this point.
The best deal he could possibly get would be bench and playing last 30 minutes if and when the occasion calls for it (which he'd never accept at least considering his past behavior), while in all probability he'd be told to just go away in order to avoid all the media circus that seems to follow him everywhere.

I would argue that modern defenses are better.

It is. As long as he's not retired and the coaches keep selecting him.. You can't blame Ronaldo for wanting to represent his country for as long as possible.
It is a unique case though. Most people would've accepted that their level isn't good enough and called it quits. But, I don't think Ronaldo is quitting anything until he has at least a thousand goals. Or that Messi retires and he can't overtake his goal tally.

Once he retires from football, he just isn't that important anymore. Football moves on, and he'll just be another ex-footballer. No amount of importance or fame carries over once you retire.
It's hard to imagine someone like Ronaldo post-retirement. What does that even look like? Does he start saying controversial things to stay relevant? Does he go into acting? Politics? Because surely he won't adjust well to not being anywhere near as important anymore.
So if he can still be wheeled out for the next Euros, he will.
You're right in saying that retirement won't sit well with him. It seems like he'd have no idea what to do with himself if he's not playing football.
But he can't drag this on forever. The idea of a 43 year old Ronaldo hobbling around at the next Euros is just sad.

I haven't met a single person here who still wants him in the team, but then again I don't tend to associate with people who have been kicked in the head by horses so perhaps I don't have my finger fully on the pulse

No, it's not.
You earn your right be called up or have a place in the starting XI through your current performances not your name or your legacy. That much should be obvious.
There's no world where a 41 years old, who already was washed up four years ago, gets to play almost every single minute in an international tournament when he clearly is even less up for it.

I think it must be a first in popular culture where the old blokes are still the superstars. Usually they're discarded for the new kids on the block. Be it football, music, films etc.

I think it's because they're both still playing. It will drop off significantly once they both retire.
Its doubly odd with Ronaldo as most of them have only seen him being crap. My 6 year old knows about 'Suiiiii' and he was 2 when Ronnie was playing for us and being somewhat good

Normally young people would have moved on years ago and Mbappe, Yamal would be the guys.
I was at Trafford Centre earlier in the Lego shop. It's Messi and Ronaldo as the Lego footballers you can buy. No surer way of determining who is still flavour of the month I'd say.
It's really unusual in entertainment for the guys who are past it to still be the headline acts.
Still playing for their national teams, however. Once that stops their stars will begin to fade.
