Cristiano Ronaldo - Countdown to 1k | 959 currently

Too much nonsense in that Ronaldo vs Messi thread, need something more interesting like a Ronaldo vs Dara O Shea thread

O'Shea has a history of doing that kind of stuff. He also tried to bait Ronaldo in 2021 where he kicked the ball from the penalty spot and then had a comical "reaction" from Ronaldo's "slap".

I genuinely don't understand what you're trying to argue here. Whether O'Shea is the biggest diver in football is irrelevant. Whether there was minimal contact or not, it's a red card and he shouldn't have reacted in that way.

He really binned his reputation with us didn't he. Utterly killer player and undoubtedly in the conversation for one of the best, I'd even still say at his best, better than Messi. (Don't worry folks I'm about to insult him)

(But) What a phallus. Just such a crybaby, and really went about so much the wrong way, the way he left, that stupid interview, going for the money and the record that hardly matters anymore. No one cares if you break records while being a honking jeb end. He could have just ended his season with us, said thank you, respect to the fans, and done a couple of years for a €1 a year symbolic wage at Sporting.

I believe it was the little known philosopher Mike Skinner who once said "You're fit, but my gosh, don't you know it?"

Mike Skinner also said ‘everything is borrowed’. Ronaldo will learn that, eventually.

If O’Shea elbows Ronaldo like that, then Ronaldo falls down like a sack of spuds. It’s a penalty and probably a red card. Ronaldo has probably done the same 20-30 times in his career.

He needs to look on the bright side. At least that suspension means he can spend the day strutting down Copacabana Beach, noticing the admiring glances, as he whispers to himself "Beckham could never..."

He's gone for a big UFC spinning back elbow, mate. You're allowed to take your tongue out of his arsehole for five minutes.

Yes he shouldn't have reacted in that way, but it does matter whether that was a dive or not. In 2021 the ref saw O'Shea's reaction and he laughed at it. I'm not saying it was a dive in this situation but from that angle the contact looked minimal.

Plus it wasn't precisly a bland, nor disguised elbow, he tried to fully get him.
If he succeeded entirely or not should not matter and there was contact anyway. I dunno why prior to the game he was already talking about animosity, that certainly didn't helped his mind set.

That Portugal side can play better without him anyway. When he’s not there they can focus on playing like a normal functioning team instead of one where the players need to look for a 40 year old man child every time there’s an attack. Can’t say I’m surprised to see his PR guy trying to talk down a blatant red card though, it’s Sporting’s twin! As it stands he’s winding down his career in a really undignified fashion.

It doesn't matter at all. An deliberate elbow, like a punch, is a red regardless of whether it makes contact or not. Even if O'Shea didn't make a meal of it, Ronaldo would have been sent off.

I guess you forgot how Roy Keane and Van Nistelroy left Utd. Roy Keane was so bad and toxic, that entire tape had to be buried. So how wasn't their reputation "tarnished"?

Clutching straws? It's a clear red card.

Probably because the fan base overwhelmingly agreed with him at the time. Ronaldo's public 'exit interview' with Piers Morgan smacked of ulterior motive. It seemed to stem from him being deeply unhappy about being in and out of the team at the time with the Glazers just catching stray bullets. From what I recall, the fan base wanted to give Ten Hag a chance (understandable in Dec/Jan 22/23) and didn't disagree with Ronaldo's starting status diminishing.

Doing the interview with a public Man United hater was probably taken quite personally too. I for one didn't like it - it also gave the abus fuel to mock us. It also became obvious from that interview how childish he was, in short - if you don't suck up to him (Neville and Rooney at the time) he will publicly slag you off. The interview made him so dislikable to me.

Keane publicly slagged players like John O' Shea, Fletcher and Kieran Richardson on MUTV. Then he clashed in the dressing room with Rio and Fergie. He was so toxic that Fergie had to remove him. Similar story with Van Nistelroy. At the end of 2005-06 he was often benched in favor of Ronaldo and Rooney and he couldn't handle that.

Once in the training ground he was very mad at Ronaldo and said to Ronaldo "go cry to your daddy" and Ronaldo's dad died just a couple of months prior to that. Ferguson had to intervene and he eventually sold Van Nistelroy.

I don't recall Ronaldo doing this in his second Utd stint. He clashed with ETH which was a clash of ego's and he did that interview which was bad, but I don't think it's as bad as Keane's exit from Utd.

I think some of the guys here will win an argument with Christiano Ronaldo even if he himself agree that he not the actual GOAT.

Would be fitting to bow out with the only trophy he hasn't won - The World Cup. Part of me hopes he does it.
It ain't happening. I wish people would be realistic about this. Portugal are good, but they have a terrible, weak manager, and there's plenty of other good teams (some better) who don't have terrible managers.

Minor point but, Ruud was being benched for Saha the back end of 05-06.

Also, from the Ruud v Ronaldo training ground bust up, word was Ruud was referring to Ronaldo's relationship with Queiroz - I highly doubt he was trying to upset Ronaldo over his dads passing. That's a whole other level of vile.

Anyway, my main point re Keane and why his reputation wasn't 'tarnished' was that the overwhelming feeling (from memory) was that the majority of supporters agreed with him at the time. Ronaldo's 'walk out' v Spurs also put him on pretty thin ice as a segway to the whole Piers Morgan thing.

There must be few players that have so many contradictory declarations that bite their own arses so frequently
Thought it particularly amusing because he went out of his way to talk about discipline before the game and then cosplays Bruce Lee with the post-strike pose.

It's like Homelander meets The Truman Show.

yeap, bizarre to say the least

He has said that this will be his last world cup. Imagine if Portugal somehow fails to qualify for the WC.

The way he even uses a red card to become the whole focus of attention is so embarrassing. He must be the most shallow and insecure person in the history of the game.

Helps that neither Roy or Ruud have the personality of a wet sock on a cold morning.

Clear red card, no arguements there at all.

I reckon he'll get a three match ban as well, could be a short world cup for him should they get there by winning the group

In a land where he’s just kissed up to the most bent administration there’s ever been, who are hosting the tournament, who have the ear of arguably the most bent FIFA boss, you genuinely believe he’s going to get a three match ban?

Would be surprised if he misses a WC game.

You make a fair point
Keane spoke the truth when is was sacked
Ronaldo is another matter,he walked away and he went to Morgan of all people to do a fecking horrible interview, Morgan is one of the most ABU people you can get and to do that interview was the act of a coward, he was dead to me after that, was glad to see the back of him. Could not care less what he does any more, he knew what he was doing with the elbow

but it was a straight red card, automatic 3 match ban, is it not.
