Cristiano Ronaldo - Much Ado About Al Nassr

I am usually all for hating on Ronaldo, but his reasoning is actually very valid and a surprisingly good move on his behalf

He was the first one to send condolences to Jota's family. Salah and Alisson weren't also present at Jota's funeral but no one is making a fuss about it.

Jota's town is pretty small and if he showed up it would attract a lot of unwanted attention and that's why he didn't attend the funeral.

It's really weird (not at all) how people like you were silent when Messi tried to sucker punch Vitinha a couple of days ago. Messi also remained silent as Argentina captain when his Argentinian teammates sang a racist song toward French players who were black. None of you said a word about those things or nor did you criticize him.

Makes you wonder WHY. It's not a coincidence at all...

Jesus it really is mental how a conversation can't be had about Ronaldo without someone somehow bringing Messi into it.

You complain about the same thing you do time and again...

I disagree with many things Ronaldo does, he looks as narcissist most of the time, but this is actually in my opinion a very good reasoning from him. And rather selfless move.

That he would overshadow the funeral by showing up. He’s doing it by not showing up though.

Whether he attended or not, the media would have put some Ronaldo spin on it, just to make sure they get their hits and clicks.

Man, posts like this really lower the overall quality of what is still a generally very good forum. I guess these are the consequences of Tik Tok and the other crappy social networks.

I didnt know Jota. Ronaldo does. So I dont see how I cant criticise Ronaldo for his reasoning. If he felt that would be the best, not to bring a circus to someone's funeral, who am I or anyone to have a go at him for that?

This post was ok in the first half. Then its quality went head first to the trash can once the unnecessary Messi comparisons started. Low effort to start the same debate over and over again

My best friend went to his first funeral when he was 40, his father's. He just had to go. Since then, he has shown up to a couple more, of close friends or family, including my father's.

Was Ronaldo even close to some of Jota's surviving family or friends? I doubt it. What would then be the benefit of him going to the funeral? So that people don't criticize him for not going?

It's stupid. Some people don't like funerals, it's their business. Unless there's a clear expected role of supporting the family, it was always going to be a circus, whether he went or not.

Personally, when my father died, every single person that showed up and greeted me made me feel a tiny bit better (even people I didn't knew). Not a major difference, but still relevant. So I do think going to these things is a nice thing for the family, and you should go if you want to. However, I think nothing less of the people that didn't come, even the ones I regard as close friends.

You are giving him too much credit for something he didn't do, or even confirmed the reason he didn't do. We don't even know if it's true if I am not mistaken?

This is the same guy to who United fans sang songs for 15 years and he never once showed up at Old Trafford for game he wasn't obliged to play, not even for charity or any other game even as a fan from stands.

He has every right not to attend Jota's funeral, but he must be the only person in the world who gets credit for something he didn't do.

His sister made a long public post about it. His mother shared a report about it on her Instagram. So yeah the reason he didn’t go is pretty much confirmed.

If his sister made a post then it must be true, because she has proved to be very reliable many times.

Honestly disgusting that headlines are being made out of this.

So you'll disbelieve the only reason that's been made public because...?

I don't really care what his mother or sister says about Ronaldo not attending someone's funeral. I don't really care why he didn't go either, I explained in my initial post why it's not important to even discuss it.

Let’s call a spade a spade here, he should have gone to the funeral, I’m sure his reasons for not wanting to cause a fuss with the media are valid, but that happened regardless. If he had gone to the funeral, it wouldn’t have made any of Jotas family mourn any differently, and the only headlines would have been “Ronaldo attends friend and national teammate funeral”. I think it was a mistake not to go.

Respectfully, I don't think it's anyone's business to tell someone else how they should be grieving (or otherwise). It's absolutely bonkers to me that people even have an opinion on this. It's a personal choice that has absolutely nothing to do with anyone else

The fact people are hating on him for not going is ridiculous.

If ronaldo goes the media would quadruple, security would quadruple in a small town that probably cant and doesn't want to deal with that.

That's not even Jotas family and friends they wouldn't want that circus when they want to grieve and say goodbye.

I do get that, but he’s made it much worse for himself and the whole situation by not going. it is a strange set of standards to hold someone to, but that’s just the way the world works.

From personal experience, people can turn up to a funeral purely for performative reasons, whilst people actually saddened by loss can choose not to go. It’s all about optics these days, unfortunately.

Has anyone ever considered that maybe the family asked him not to attend because of the circus that would have likely ensued?

There's another big flaw to this argument, and that is that everyone expected him to attend, no one ever said he won't attend the funeral so the media, the fans who wouldn't come if he wasn't there were already at the funeral. I don't think his fans really thought this through to detail.

This post is pure insanity.

I think you'll find the ones criticising Ronaldo this for this, would likely criticise him for not following Health and Safety guidelines if he rescued a puppy from a burning building.

Dear Cristiano,

I defended you again on Redcafe. They still don’t understand why you wouldn’t have gone to Diogo’s funeral. They don’t see you like I see you. If only they’d open their hearths and their minds.

I know I say it every time I write but thank you. Not just for the goals, the trophies, the suiis, the sponsored instagram posts or the classic and always insightful media engagements you do, but thank you for being you. I wouldn’t have a personality if it wasn’t for you. I’d have nothing in my life. I look at my walls and wonder what would be there if not for posters of you in your kits (or underpants. drool.)

I’ll always defend you as I know you’d defend me too.

Until tomorrow’s letter. Yours, always.”

There were three pages on this thread about Cristiano not attending Jota's funeral but zero about Messi's attempted sucker punch on Vitinha. That is pure insanity.
Even if Messi had kicked Vitinha in the head (and actually connected), he would still be a better footballer than Cristiano Ronaldo. Morality doesn't come into it. The insanity of your post is your inability to defend Ronaldo without bringing up something bad that Messi (allegedly) did.

I mean, it's not even as if the two things are slightly related, like Messi not attending a teammate's funeral, or something like that.

You're still having nightmares over these games. I know . Poor Arsenal fans, this guy destroyed them so many times .

"Too far for Ronaldo to think about it"

I wouldn't disagree with that!

He could also have contacted the family privately as well to say that he would visit them at another, less visible time. It's really not that big a deal. Does anyone really think that Ronaldo doesn't give a crap about the death of Jota?

Ironic. All in all, it's probably better to go, but not going is also understandable.

There appears to be one or two on here that seem to think so, IMO it shouldn't be any kind of deal, big or small

It's ok if he doesn't want to go, as he believes it's going to cause too much of a circus. He expressed himself on social media about it.

What it's not acceptable in my opinion is Luis Diaz's attitude, not only not going to the funeral but going to a influencers party, record himself and picturing himself having a great time while his teammates are mourning the loss of Diogo. And it's even worse when you consider how Diogo supported Luis when is father was kidnapped.
