I'm no legal expert but I'd be shocked if we got out of his contract without paying anything. Would be too good to be true.
I wouldn't put it past us to end up both without the player, yet still paying the full wage.

Haven't watched any of it as I can't take anyone who does a 2 hour interview with Piers Morgan to whine about their 3rd world problems seriously. Particularly not when it's a spoilt millionaire.
1st world? :wenger:

Honestly looking forward to binning his legion of acolytes as much as I'm looking forward to getting him out of the dressing room.

The Ronaldo superfans are much more zealous and fervent than any of the other player fanbase groups we've dealt with over the years. They legitimately don't live in reality, it's why you can see stuff like this

Slagging off everything about the club then claiming he was happy and looking forward to a good season?
I’m surprised more people haven’t picked up on what a hilarious bold face lie this was.

Essentially this entire thing has stemmed from people making fun of the fact that no big clubs wanted him this summer, and his ego can’t take it, so he’s done a really silly scorched earth interview just to set the record straight that actually loads of clubs wanted him, but also he never actually ever wanted to leave, apart from hating everything about being here, the club hierarchy, manager and most of the players, and also that he’s fine with United getting rid of him if that’s what’ll help them… but also he’s annoyed that they wanted to do that, because they definitely did, even if it looked like it was entirely him, and he missed all of pre-season trying to do it, and he could’ve just posted on Instagram or something and cleared it all up months ago if he’d wanted to stay, but he didn’t.. because he did. And also loads of people want him cos he scores so many goals. And anyway the reason he’s not scoring as many goals now is that we don’t want him.

Its all just so very transparently silly.

Only thing I'd have done different was to never posture like we wanted to keep him. There's a ridiculous amount of delusion that our position made clubs not want him. 'Our asset our rules' approach for a player who once likened it to slavery was always going to end in car crash. We def sold out on our values begging him to stay. There's contradiction to doing this after stating anyone who wants to leave can f off.
Did we? Where did you get this from?

He he refused to play and left the ground while the game was still on and in holding him accountable like any other player, Ten Hag allegedly disrespected him by…bringing him back in to the starting XI and making him captain?

Not to mention he was backed by the manager when he missed all preseason.

Then he says he was upset when Ten Hag didn’t bring him on against City and in the same though is also upset that Ten Hag wanted to bring him on for the final minutes against Spurs...

Rooney also spent part of his prime years playing on the wing and was a big part of a team that allowed Ronaldo to shine through his own sacrifice...and Ronaldo's response to Rooney's level headed and fair questions/criticism was to call him jealous and ugly

The interview was full of 'magical thinking' that would make his friend Jordan Peterson proud.

This season has been the perfect example to dispel the myth that Ronaldo was amazing and a net positive last season. He blunts everything around him to shine as bright as he can with not a care in the world to the team success.
He scored a goodly number of goals with very little service, but his total refusal/inability to put in any work at all off the ball had a terrible effect on our play.

It's no secret Erik, SAF and the club tried persuading him to reconsider and help Erik's project. On the chance that your qualm is the use of the word "beg" then you can sub it with persuading. It's kinda not really the thrust of the point.

It’s going to be extremely embarrassing for Ronaldo if we terminate his contract and he becomes a free agent yet still no club comes in for him. Or if he has to humble himself and end up at a small club on a fraction of his wages.

He really is deluded about how little desire clubs have for him now.

I woul be massively surprised if we have to pay anything. He's clearly breached his contract in a way that completely justifies his sacking. He refused to play and then he went on TV and slagged off the manager and owners. It's pretty open and shut.

I would expect a bland statement at some stage saying Ronaldo and the club have agreed to part company and wish each other the best.

He had completely destroyed that now. He is completely and utterly unable to get over himself and give back to a club that did so much for him, even at 37 years old.
The paragraph I have quoted tallies with what I have been thinking

He isn’t one of the best 3 players in the World any more. He’s nearly 38, has already won everything and is unlikely to find a better team than United now (or one that will pay him as much either)

I don’t get why he can’t just accept what his role in a top team will be now, fight for his place and give something back.

United are still in 4 competitions so he could easily play loads, score loads and help them win something

I've seen reports the club is exploring terminating his contract and suing him. Has that been covered here?

Yeah, the magical thinking is also why it’s so baffling to see people - real people! - say stuff like “I can kind of understand it from his POV” because… really!?? It’s ALL contradictory and only makes sense if you’re a delusional narcissist.

I mean, I understand it from that POV, sure. But it’s very silly

It's just what you'd expect from a Piers Morgan interview really. A bunch of dramatic rubbish where the main redeeming feature is that it's far too cringeworthy to sit through anyway.

I can buy the stuff about his kid not being well, but you can't give a fecking two night long interview about how much you hate the club and everything about it, and at the same time claim you're being "forced out" of the club against your will and chose to stay anyway due to how overwhelmingly happy you were.

And the club making an announcement to announce that having comsidered what announcement to make, they're now considering making an announcement, is the most pointlessly Man Utd thing ever. If we handle this the way we handle transfers, we'll probably terminate his contract about 6 months after its expired.

Ok. I thought he’d stayed because no club wanted him. Consequently it was in the club’s and Erik’s best interests to keep things sweet so as to minimise the likelihood of his throwing his toys out. All to no avail, sadly. Though I don’t suppose they were expecting his form to desert him quite as much as it has.

Ronaldo apologists will also gloss over the fact that we scored 73 goals in 20/21, then regressed to 57 in 21/22 after signing him. Yes, he scored quite a few of those, but the attack as a whole suffered greatly in comparison to the season before. We had to alter how we played to accommodate him, and I would argue that every single attacking player regressed as a result. Just pointing to Ronaldos goal tally doesn't paint the whole picture.
The premier league game vs Aston Villa at Villa Park this season illustrates your point perfectly. Players kept looking for him and the whole attack suffered. Alot of players generally become shit when he plays not least Bruno.

If he has a standard PL contract I doubt there will be a problem. Given Woodward’s past history, I suppose it’s possible that he had some sort of rider added that guaranteed him stuff above and beyond the standard terms, which could indeed make things awkward.

I got told off by another poster up-thread for facetiously calling into question Matt Judge’s competence :)

You're correct, we couldn't have given him away to a top club. If we are able to rip up his contract he won't end up at a top club like he thinks he will either.

It was well reported that there was a meeting at the beginning of the season with Ronaldo, his agent, SAF, Ten Hag and people from the board. SAF and Ten Hag were trying to persuade him to stay and get with the project. Apparently Ronaldo still said he wanted out.

Yeah. If anything he’s a lot worse off now than he was in the summer. His mobility has declined even further, the goals have all but dried up and his behaviour has been grossly unprofessional.

To play devils advocate, the problem here is that for 25 years of his career Ronaldo has NOT been delusional. He's been the best player on Earth and has a following of what, 500 million people? The challenge is to remain grounded in those circumstances because MAN it must be hard to retain any semblance of sanity when there are 500 million people doting on you, telling you how great you are all of the time, like of course you're going to become narcissistic to some extent if you don't have the self awareness, or if you even thrive or rely on it, See:. Every politician ever, Elon Musk, Trump, you name it. It's people from humbler backgrounds that work hard to never forget where they came from that somehow have a shield against it, but I can't imagine surviving that level of intensity myself. So from that perspective maybe it's understandable, but it's nothing to applaud and it's not something you want near you..or in this case your football club!

Why is it controversial that we tried to keep an asset? Does everything need to be contested and proven? It's a right we have by default. The only thing left to discuss is the wisdom of exercising said right. Where were you where all through preseason we said he wasn't for sale, when erik said he wanted Ronaldo to stay? If your reason for contesting this is what I think it is then I suggest you start from the orignal point. Understand the context of bringing it up
