Daley Blind
Mar 9, 1990 (26)
Amsterdam

1.80 m
The Dutchman's footballing tutelage came from Ajax’s hugely respected youth academy, where he graduated with a reputation as one of his country's brightest talents, signing his first professional terms with his hometown club at the age of 17.

Daley Blind arrived at Old Trafford in 2014 following an ascent to the top of Dutch football that was a story of patience and persistence both on and off the field.

From being awarded Ajax’s prestigious Talent of the Future award in 2008 to a standout showing at the 2014 World Cup, the son of Netherlands legend Danny Blind has made a name for himself domestically and on the global stage.

The versatile Dutchman's stock continued to rise in 2015/16 as, alongside Chris Smalling, he was a key member of the United backline, establishing himself as an ever-present in the side. A reliable and technically sound player, Blind made more appearances than any of his team-mates (56 in total), helping the Reds claim 25 clean sheets in all competitions.

Really hope he stays. One of the few intelligent players in the squad

I don't think we should sell him either. He's not a central defender, and certainly not a Mourinho central defender, but he has been a good signing since he joined and hasn't done anything to deserve being sold. His versatility will be something we need and, as dichinero says above, he's one of the few intelligent, patient, controlled players we have. Of course we're hoping that Mourinho adds some more urgency to our play and we're no longer the ponderous team we were last season, but there will be plenty of times when a player like Blind will be much-needed.

I really hope he will stay. I know he probably isn't quality enough to be first choice at any position he can play (hoping he will be used as DM and LB if needed), but you always need this type of player in squad, he can always jump in and do the job.

I really like his style of play, he reminds me of Carrick a lot and maybe could take his role some day. Not sure if he could reach Carrick's level though, but who knows.

I wouldn't be all that surprised if he plays the vast majority of his appearances at left back next year.

Far too slow as a fullback just as he is as a center back. He should be a decent defensive midfielder, but again he lacks physicality and I'm not sure he's good enough as a playmaker to make up for it ala Carrick.

Yep, he was pretty solid as well even given the little he had to do.
Interesting, puts a lie to the idea that Mourinho would never, ever, use him there, even if it was only a friendly. If we're smart with him he's a real asset back there imo.

Mourinho never said anything of the sort.

I know, but the prevailing theory on here was that it was curtains for him there.
We're quite bad at the 'general opinion' things here. Bailly was the new Ivanovic a day ago, and I remember Tom Cleverley being a perfect van Gaal player. :nervous:

Ha. Yeah. Have to say I didn't say Blind as a Jose CB either. The papers had him leaving which I never did believe. Jose has said he only likes a couple of multi functional players. But Blind is probably our best multi functional player while excelling at LB, and excelling as DM in certain respects. Sure others would go before him. A very capable and dependable player to have.

It tends to go with whatever the prevailing moods are. I thought Blind was mostly excellent at CB and so did the Caf, seemingly, until people turned on Van Gaal and he got thrown under the bus with him.

The only real concern I have with him is against tall strikers, I'm not at all worried about his pace, but as long as we're not playing him against teams that will aerially bombard us his passing is worth having.

He's going to factor in this season more than most posters are acknowledging.

I wouldn't be all that surprised if he ended up holding down a center half spot. He did well last year and no one but Smalling has shown as much there through the course of a season.

Jones has the talent, but plenty of questions remain about his fitness and reading of the game. He's too reliant on hero mode plays to deal with trouble he should have snuffed out before it became an issue.

Rojo just doesn't look good enough to start.

Maybe Bailly can take the spot beside Smalling at some point this season. He's young and new to the EPL, so he can't be faulted if it doesn't happen this season.

Add it all up, and we might see Blind there again. He doesn't be Mourinho's archetypal center half, but that might the deciding factor.

If he doesn't end up with a center half spot, he's going to be one of the best utility players in the league. Mourinho clearly mentioned the need for a couple of such players in the squad. How people see him out the door before the season starts is beyond me.

Agreed. He's one of those players who Jose will come to rely on, which will then result in a consistent role.

Yeah. Agree with all of that. Such an intelligent footballer. You don't need to be a great manager to see how valuable he can be in a long campaign and Jose's no mug.

Certainly the best Utility man in the league, no one can agree what his "natural position" is. Does a very good job when played in lb CB or midfield

I's dead set against signing Blind because I thought he's too slow and weak to play in the PL.

And now he's completely won me over and I'd be extremely disappointed if he's to leave just because he's one of LVG's close aides! Blind is one of the most intelligent players out there and he's shown even in such a high paced and physical league like PL, you can overcome your lack of speed if you're smart enough.

If he's a little bit faster, he'd not have been playing for us! Over the course of time, he's become stronger too. He's a very good passer of the ball, a leader, a fighter, and a class act on and off the pitch.

Glad to see Mou use him as a CB today, the interesting thing was he brought the ball out a lot less than usual, deferring that task to Bailly.

I really hope he stays. Blind is very elegant on the ball and probably has the best first touch out of all the players in our team. Mkhitaryan will challenge that though

I was pumped when we got him. Liked him as a stop gap LB and a holding mid. His touch is silky as a CB. He's ball control is so great and I for one loved him as Smalling's partner. I like the idea of having him along with Mike Smalling, Jones and Bailly all in the mix. Let the best 2 start and the next 2 play sparingly in league play and cup play till injury dictates changes. I would be extremely disappointed to lose Blind.

Mou may not like utility players but he is one.. I expect him to take Rojo's LB/CB duties from next season (not starter but next choice in both roles).

Personally, I prefer him as a CDM. If we play 4-3-3 he could be great there.

He can be Mou's Zouma. Play him at CDM or CB or LB depending on requirement. Mou has said that he likes specialist but he always has 1 or 2 utility players in his squad.

It's harsh if we sell him after having a good season with us. I don't mind if we keep him since he's an intelligent footballer but I can also understand why Mourinho decides to sell him. I don't think he is good enough to be our midfielder or defenders. Even though him and Carrick have similar playing style but Blind is just nowhere near Carrick's level at all. I'm not too sure if Jose wants him as our main man in back four. Smalling tried to win every single header last season because Blind isn't good at it which I think one of the reason why he looked so exhausted. As an utility player, Mensah is a better option IMO since he has the talent to be our starter but also at the same time he can cover some position if needed.

He did alright at CB, though not tested all that much. I think I much prefer him at fullback where he can use his brain a bit more. Still scares me when he is in the box defending.

I've always been critical of him for lacking size and strength but it's nice to have a player with a brain in his head. I don't want him as the regular LCB but I would certainly like to keep him on the squad. He is more than good enough as a backup and a starter in games where we are expected to have most of the possession.

awful midfielder, hope we never see him play there again....worst version of Andrea Pirlo that money can buy. Keep him as a backup centerback/fullback and thats it.

Hate to use the slow thing as a stick to beat Blind with but Jesus he looked off the pace in that first half. I'll give him benefit of the doubt as he hasn't played in DM for a good while, but he has not helped his chances with Jose today.

Just put him on fecking steroids ffs. It amazes me how a professional athlete can be so slow and lack so much strength. A real shame since he would have been a brilliant CDM if he had the physical attributes.
