To be fair his crossing on his left looks very decent. Put a couple of nice balls in for Wales. Don't see it as an issue.

If that were true, there wouldn't be so many people on Rashford's back. Can't deny the lad works hard, it's simply the intelligence and decision making aspect of his movement, passing, shooting that is frustrating. Then again, James is white I suppose and doesn't dance around with silly twats like Lingard (yet) so wouldn't surprise me if he got praised for doing the same stuff Rashford gets slated for.

Bit of a silly comment . What exactly is PL level ? I had a season ticket at Swansea last season and in my opinion he is already better than Lingard and Sanchez . While those 2 let games drift by this kid has the ability to terrorise defenders.. I take it you didn't see him against Man City last season ? Def not PL level

Rashford gets criticised for not passing at the right times, and taking silly shots from 30+ yards that miss by miles. All fair criticism.

That's what I said...the guy I quoted was suggesting that hard work would make James immune from criticism. I doubt it but depends on how he's perceived in the stands more than what he does on the pitch.

I mean it's not. They're both very good dribblers as well, and again had similar productivity in the championship. You keep saying pace is the only similarity when it's not .. there's plenty of similarities in there careers if you actually look, just because they're not the same player and James is a better decision maker doesn't mean there's no comparison to be had.

I think bringing his colour into it just makes your opinion look silly, less of that.

I think as usual at first people will quickly make their minds up about him, we will have the usual 2 camps arguing. I just hope with his speed he can keep getting us into attacking situations, even if he doesn't make the most of them all the time.

Like I said, you can compare any wingers, there will be similarities. Comparing him with Adama was just odd comparison, they are both pacey players and not similar at all (that's where similarities end). It's a lazy comparison just based on pace.

I fail to see how colour isn't relevant in how people in Britain perceive someone. Or do you think we're a post racist society? To you I say Anne Widdicombe.

It's not though, I just gave other reasons for comparing them beyond pace ..

Anyway, it doesn't matter. I'm looking forward to seeing him in the prem tbh, he's an exciting player and I'll definitely keep an eye on him this season. Nothing more fun to watch in football than a lightning quick winger who likes to get at his fullback.

People forget something. Our right wing is non existent. There is no one there. Even if we play adama, it would still be an improvement.

Lingard and Mata plays centrally most of the time even if started on right.

Other reasons being championship players who had sort of similar goals and assists. It's like comparing Rashford and Sane as both played as wingers, in PL and have 15-20 goal contributions. To add to that they are very quick.

Just for a comparison sake, Adama averaged 12.5 dribbles per 90 mins and attempted 17 passes per 90 mins. He has nearly as many dribble attempts as pass attempts. (366 dribbles attempted and 456 passes attempted)

Before that in 2016-17 and 2015-16 seasons he attempted 369 and 30 passes; 180 and 41 dribbles.

It's easy to see, what's his first instinct is, at Villa (2015-16 season) he attempted more dribbles than passes.

Compare that to Daniel James. He attempted 940 passes and 76 dribbles.

This should tell you about the style of players. Adama is dribble first player, Daniel James doesn't attempt more than your average winger.

Similar age when they broke through, same league, both quick and both like to dribble .. James does it less but it's one of his key attributes. And their productivity is very similar. But yeah, just pace?

I've already said, Adama has an issue with overplaying his dribbling ability, James has that ability (not to the same extent, but he does have it) but prefers to pick a pass. That doesn't make them completely different players, I've watched both extensively in the championship and there are numerous similarities in the way they play. You can deny that if you want, that's fine, but I'm really not just saying they're similar because pace. Having watched both of them I feel they've had similar progression paths and overlapping attributes.

Again, I'm aware that Traore attempts more dribbles and James more passes. That's a) because Traore is not a particularly intelligent player and b) because the Middlesbrough side he played in was very direct and used Traore as an outlet, whereas Swansea are a team who emphasise the passing game (still more so than anyone else in the championship). If James played for that Middlesbrough side (who were quite defensive, very counter oriented) you would have seen his attempted dribbles go up as he would be more direct, as per his manager's instructions.

Just because one dribbles more and the other prefers to pass, doesn't mean that comparisons cannot be made. I didn't say they were twins.

Like I said, lazy comparison nothing more, just because both have amazing pace. Their playing style couldn't have been more different.

Bold part, shows why they are different players and that's why I said it's odd comparison.

Some of the arguments on here are mental.

Young, pace to burn, looks to have a decent cross, eye for a goal, work ethic, hungry. I would imagine he will start the season as back up to Martial, happy days can't wait to see the lad go at fullbacks.

Arguing over if he is PL level or little stats as to if he compares to someone or not, jesus. Lets hope he gets given a bit of time to settle and fingers crossed he gets my arse of my seats on more than a few occasions!

Yep. One different approach means that no comparisons are to be had and it's immediately lazy and based purely off the fact they're quick. You've got me.

James is absolutely not already a better player than Lingard and United fans will be hugely disappointed if they think they're getting some significant upgrade. He's young and very raw.

Lingard may not be a great player, but there's a reason multiple England and United managers have played him. He would bag double figures for both goals and assists in the championship no problem at all.

Just can't wait to see an enthusiastic winger who actually runs at fullbacks and can put a decent ball in, at the moment we have:

Mata - No pace no skill offers zero from out wide
    Lingard - Next
    Sanchez - Woeful
Rashford - Gets excited when he gets within 50 yards and shoots, decision making horrendous
Marital - Miserable as hell, walks, doesn't give a sh*t

Bring it on, can't wait, won't be to long until he gets a few starts if last season is anything to go by!

Feel free to sign him from us if you want, in fact, I will pay you and I will even offer to drive the little bell there myself.

The bloke is absolutely woeful and if James does not end up being twice the player Lingard is then it's another 15M well and truly down the drain.

I didn't say he's a great player, but there are far, far worse players in the championship who excel there. There are lots of players I wouldn't want near Spurs who I think would be key players in the championship.

James may well end up being twice the player, but he's not that right now, unless he seriously kicks on next season. What he does have is potential and something that perhaps you lack at the moment.

We're going to expect far too much of him. Not his fault but that's how I see it going down. How long before I see someone on her suggesting he is loaned out?

On the contrary, he caused city more problems in their FA cup tie than many of our wide players ever manage.

If he plays for a better team and can concentrate on attacking, i'm sure his figures will rise.

We lack a winger who has the bottle to run at players, he ticks a lot of boxes that we badly lack. Not expecting him to pull up any trees next year at all, all about his progress and development, if he can nab a few goals and assists next year then fair play to him.

Lingard may well hit double figures in the Championship over 46 games, you put that down to 38 games I think he could struggle, finishing is dreadful and I think he has 1 assist for us in about 10 months.

If James nabs two assists before Xmas, already a better player than Lingard haha it will not take much for him to reach Lingard's level and it won't take much to dislodge him from our starting 11 either.

Jesus, the absolute state of this!

You can say and mean what you want about his persona, but as a squad player he is useful, proven by him playing fairly regularly in the PL and for England. I understand that someone have to get most of the flack after a season like this, and he is an easy target because of his persona pf the pitch but most of it is far over the line at this point.

I do hope and believe James will end up as a more influential player, but it may take some time. Partially because Lingard isn't as useless and woeful as half this forum makes him out to be.

It's not a matter of who the better player would be in Championship since PL is an entirely different beast. The problem with Lingard is that he's decent at many things but doesn't really stand out at anything. He can run fast but isn't the fastest, he can play a good through ball but isn't particularly creative, he can score some screamers but isn't prolific, he can dribble past defenders but doesn't take them on nearly enough. The thing Lingard really does well is his constant movement.

What a player like James could potentially bring is that same work ethic of Lingard while also adding the pace factor that we've missed on the right side. In worst case, he may not get the assists or goals but neither does Lingard. At least there is some sort of an upside.

Yep, that's totally fair. James will provide a bit of excitement and you'll like how much he presses off the ball, one thing you can't question is his application.

He would, trust me on that. Loads of players can barely get a goal or an assist in the PL then drop to the championship and are bagging for fun.

I'm honestly interested to see how James does. You can never really tell for sure whether a player will make the step up, so it's always exciting even though he isn't a Spurs player.

I think one of the main things James will add is pure hunger. He's a very hard working player and you can see how fecking chuffed he is to have got a move to United. I can imagine he'll be absolutely desperate to prove himself, which could lead to him trying too much and overplaying, but the desire will be there. I honestly think that's something you've lacked as a squad for a while, plenty of talented players in the team but a lack of players who are hungry and will follow the manager's every word.

First of all calm yourself down lad.

Second, did not mention his persona once, did I? Can't see that I did, going from his 1 assist while playing as a 10/RW for Man United and his massive goal contribution of pretty much f*ck all. Shaqiri hardly played all season and has far better stats, Lingard offers us nothing bar running around and being energetic, you think different, fool you.

While City, Liverpool, Spurs etc. have Sane, Silva, Sterling, Mane, Salah, Son etc., we constantly put up with Lingard's below par performances and non-existent contributions in big games, a couple of goals at Wembley, that is your lot.

The only reason he is still at the club is because our right hand side is dreadful, he even had a teenage right back being preferred to him last year, says it all.

So before you starting gobbing and growing a set, pipe down and put your toys back in your pram.

It was in direct response to him *terrorising* PL defenders, I have said he isn’t a good player and I think he will do well with time, I don’t see him being an immediate starter. What would your opinion be?
