Looks like he's set to reject a contract extension from Southampton:

Could he be worth a shout as a back up for Cavani, assuming Martial is leaving?

Looks like he's currently got one year left on his deal so could be done at a decent price.

His goal rate at Southamption has been 1 in 2 which isn't too bad at all.

He's definitely someone who could compete with Cavani for the #9 position and if we can sell Martial, it would be very prudent to invest that return into Ings.

Provided that it didn't affect our pursuits of Varane and a midfielder then wouldn't be averse to this at all

I think Ings is great. I'd probably have him above DCL as the second best English striker behind Kane.

The injuries are a bit of an issue but they never seem to be too long term these days. If he was available for a decent fee it would be a great bit of business, but I don't see it happening.

Absolutely. If he's happy competing with Cavani and sometimes Greenwood.

With Sancho, Fernandes, Rashford, Pogba all around you, a proven PL goalscorer should be on dream street.

Get him for free next summer as Cavani's replacement if he has a good season. Could be another fantastic free transfer for a striker.

Yes. Great value. A Fergie signing. Let’s us split the games with Cavani without dropping off and also helps us make our money back on Martial who will always blow hot and cold if we are being honest with ourselves. Martial will want to be the main guy and he simply won’t be with Cavani here so why waste another season? Cavani bows out and Ings is hitting into his 30s as our new strikers backup and our youth develops. He’s a game lad. It’s also definitely better to be throwing on another experienced striker with aggressive movement than an extra winger when you’re chasing a late goal.

For 30m we would have a decent chance in getting Sulemana, but I totally get why United would pursue somewhat established English striker in Premier League.

He's a mixed bag and his last season was almost average at times. Only for a really reasonable price... Hopefully we'll scout further and try to find someone bit more ambitious.

It would be a perfect signing, IMO. Martial to be sold this summer, or in January when a few teams are desperate to get in a striker. Ings will be a perfect back-up for Haaland (or Kane) next year. Unlike most others, I see the future of Greenwood as a right wing.

In each of the last two seasons (including what was comfortably Martial's best season) Ings has outscored Martial, both in terms of goals and goals per minute.

If we can sell Martial, buy Ings and be left with money to invest elsewhere then that's good business on our part. At 28 Ings could function as a good second-choice striker here for several years.

I absolutely agree with this. This would be great business right now.

I've always been in favour of keeping Martial for one more season and seeing how he gets on, but if we were to sell now I think Ings would be a very astute buy. Would be comfortable with him sharing the role with Edi for a year and then bridging the gap until we can call Greenwood our main #9.

As many have already posted a sensible signing as backup to Cavani if we got him cheap and allows Greenwood more time to develop. Plus he can play the role of lone striker / target man which Martial cant do.

Could be a decent squad player, but I wouldn't want us to pay more than 15 or 20m, tops. He's had a lot of injuries, and IMO 19/20 was his only good season since he left Burnley. He was iffy last season. I'm more inclined to think 19/20 was a purple patch rather than is usual level.

He's also 29 in a couple of weeks. He'd be a short term option to back-up our main CF who is an even shorter term option.

He scored a lot goals but I don’t know what type of striker he is?

I'm sure there would be a deal to be done with Southampton, could maybe even get Pellistri some PL experience

He'd be another very good person for Mason, Shola etc to learn from and have around
