Danny Welbeck | Ornstein: Chelsea interested

Paying a fee for a decent striker who could fall off a cliff next season due to his age isn't what I would call a sensible move from INEOS, but some fans will clap like sea lions because of the romanticism I guess.

We don’t need a more expensive player. We need someone experienced who can stand in for Sesko, help him and the other young forwards develop, and have a similar skill set. Welbeck offers all that and is homegrown

Pretty much this.

I greatly respect Danny Welbeck but coming back to OT wouldn't be in his interest or ours. Ship, sailed. I'd like a backup striker as well, and Olllie is a great option if that gambit were to come to fruition, but we need a LB more than we need a backup striker and if it came down to one or the other I'll have me a LB. We can always use Cunha at striker or even Mbeumo, who was not great but not bad either, on days when Sesko is out. But if Shaw were to go out, we're in deep spit, and even when Shaw is fit -- and his fitness record last was remarkable -- it's time for the torch to be passed.

I don’t really see it this way. For three positions, we currently have:

Sesko
Cunha
Mbeumo
Amad
Dorgu
Zirkzee
Rashford
Lacey
Thompson

So that’s nine players for three positions, and in the absolute worst case scenario, players like Bruno and Mount can fill in the attacking roles.
The top 4 are the main options with Dorgu very much raw.
None of the rest can be relied upon. Rashy will most likely be shipped off loan late on like other seasons.

Dorgu is more than good enough for a rotation/backup option, in my opinion.

I think Rashy will have a decent part to play in our fortunes next season. There's a baller there if he gets his mind focused. Hopefully now that the whole Barca phase is over its out of his system and we get our money's worth out of him.

If my nan had wheels she'd be a bike

I don't think we've single dud from Brighton. Sanchez is the worst one and he's been serviceable but not an outright disaster.

The disastrous ones have been in the hierarchy - Winstanley in particular. Graham Potter too.
Yeah those were definitely bad for you. Players are different story. Think City and United are only so called 'top 6 clubs' that haven't bought from Brighton over last 5-6 years. Liverpool got McAllister, you bought Caicedo, Cucurella, Pedro, Sanchez, now Welbeck; Arsenal signed Trossard and Ben White and recently Spurs bought van Hecke (plus Bissouma few years ago).

Don't think Welbeck can be a miss either. Won't be huge wages and he's probably guaranteed to score some goals. At least more than Aubameyang

Well then slap a new coat of paint on the old girl and ride on down to OT to watch Rashy tear it up next season!

I'm all honesty I expect him to surprise us all and put in a shift under Carrick

It's sad. I get why we haven't gone for him. But if we're selling Zirkzee, we could have done worse for a backup. Be weird to see him again playing for a rival.

How are we not in for this guy. Model professional, prem proven, a few years at the top level left, United through and through.

Honestly beggars belief this management at times.

Not seen any mention of the fee.

If Brighton are letting him go on a free and we aren't involved then we are truly silly billy's

Has injury issues and almost 36. It’s the exact move a lot of fans would moan about if he came here. Club can’t seem to win at times tbh. I like Welbeck but how is anybody honestly upset about this?

I think most people had issues with this sort of signing when we were making them the main man. It was a short term solution to a long term problem, signing the likes of Cavani, Ighalo, Ronaldo when we needed someone younger. Now we've got our main man in Sesko, and need some experienced cover who is decent, won't cost the earth and won't kick up a fuss being second choice. Welbeck fit the bill.

Couldn't give a toss tbh. If he played like he does against United all the time he'd be a generational player. It'd be a just "but he's a local lad" version of Cavani.

If his form immediately fell off a cliff absolutely nobody would then be surprised, because he will already be one of the oldest outfield players in the league this season. Never mind looking more than one season ahead.

What guarantee is there he has a few years left at the top level?

If he wasn’t an ex United player then no one would care.

Hope we don't regret letting this one go. Seemed like a logical backup that could be replaced in the next 2 years. A bit worrying how little we've been linked to a striker and how little movement there's seemed to be on a lb either (especially since Amass is seemingly going to be sold). Nearly August now, we should really be trying to get players in for these positions and to get them fit for start of the season. I'm assuming the plan is to get players in these positions. If not this would be a very big problem it has to be said

I didn't realise he was 36 to be fair, more like 34, but i'd back him to stay fit for two seasons. He keeps himself in good condition and is rarely injured. He'd accept a bit-part role over the next couple of years and would always be a useful impact player. Dangerous in the box and could score us many late goals.

He played 37 premier league games last season. 30, 29 and 31 the seasons before that.

Big shame not to bring him back.

Ah well expect a goal at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge as this bloke just loves sticking it to us

Disappointing if we let this happen.
Why?
Maybe Chelsea are paying him a lot more than we are prepared to!
We fecked up years ago when LVG sold him and spent a shit load of money on players that couldn't give a feck about the club.

Danny in a Chelsea shirt. Will be one for the "Did he really play for them?" thread in a few years. Which he is already in for his spell at Watford. I do wish he was rejoining us instead.

Well we had the chance but can't shift Rashford

We were right to sell him back then and most of the forum were for moving him on at the time. That doesn't of course mean we couldn't buy him back given that we're in a completely different era for both the club and player.

I think Chelsea are signing him to have a chance of taking some points off of us

Seems there is an endless supply of "boyhood United fans" playing for Chelsea

from Terry, Essien, Duff back in the days, to Courtois, Chilwell, Pulisic, Timo Werner, Hudson-Odoi, Sterling in recent years, and now Palmer, Caicedo (although he weirdly loved both us and Chelsea as a kid....), Morgan Rogers and probably Welbeck

I wasn't on the Forum back then and I can categorically say that I was not in favour of it.
Brighton do not sell cheap and he is 36 and Chelsea will offer higher wages.
Time to move on.

I can't say I'm too bothered, it would have made some sense for us to replace Zirkzee, but it's really not worth crying over losing out on a 35 year old.

What I will say though is I could see us doing this deal if Zirkzee had been sold already. Every summer we seem to be a constant state of fear of signing players in certain positions before we're 100% sure that we've got rid of the deadwood they're replacing. We can't seem to take a leap of faith that we'll find a move for our unwanted players, instead we have to wait all summer for them to actually leave.

Yeah we are too fearful of that situation
