Confirmed. Has passed the medical.

Welbeck joins Sunderland

Reds striker Danny Welbeck has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old had a medical on Wearside on Thursday morning. He joins a strikeforce Darren Bent and a former United club-mate Fraizer Campbell at the Stadium of Light. It's a real opening for Welbeck after the departure of Kenwyne Jones' to Stoke City.

Longsight-born Danny has progressed right the ranks with United and has made 24 appearances and scored five goals at first-team level for the Reds.

But Sir Alex believes the hugely promising England Under-21 international needs first-team experience in top-flight football, so the move to Sunderland should aid his development.

I agree with Sol, I think this loan period will be the making of him as long as he gets a decent amount of time on the pitch.

Based on his preseason exploits, I'm surprised he is going out on loan. I thought like Cleverly he may of worked his way into Fergie's plan for the season and that Macheda could of been going on loan instead.

I honestly think he has a bright future at the club, be it as a Winger, Behind the striker or up top. I think he has the attributes to play in all those positions and I hope he has a good season at Sunderland.

If by that you mean he's better than Macheda right now - It might not be the the main issue. It could actually mean he's more ready to go on loan to a Premier League club and get plenty of minutes on the pitch. We've got four strikers ahead of Macheda, and maybe after a year of injuries we want to keep him around and bring him on at a slower rate.

Heard chat of Bruce still being in the lookout for players, and Bellamy was the name being mentioned. I'd be pretty pissed off if he signed another striker, as Welbeck is in a fairly good position being probably 3rd choice striker at the min with a really chance of being 2nd after a few matches

If you were the Sunderland manager, would you go into the season with Bent, Campbell and Welbeck? I wouldn't.

Despite his excellent pre season, the only way he can develop his game further is with regular first team football. He wouldnt have seen enough game time at United this season to improve his game sufficiently. The loan should do him the world of good.

And in Cleverleys case, he's already had 2 loan spells, and is a couple of years older

Nah, i wouldn't. But i'm sure any loan deal would have been based on assurances that the player would get plenty of gametime. Obviously Welbeck would get more gametime as 3rd choice striker, than if he was 4th choice. I'd be pissed off about that, otherwise i couldnt give a shit about Sunderland tbh

They've got Waghorn who was impressive in the Championship last season, still though it does seem risky especially seeing as Bruce usually favours two strikers. Maybe he has got his eye on some South American again.

The tabs are suggesting Brucie is in for Gyan to replace Jones, but I could see Wellbeck getting played on the left wing.

At this stage at least, I think he's a better all-round player than Macheda who should really be the one going on loan. Cleverly is a great prospect and he's staying because, inexplicably, we are not going to sign Ozil - at least that's the way it looks righ now.

They also may be in for N'Zogbia if he decides to leave Wigan which would only make it more difficult for him to see any playing time..

I think he would be ok with it (playing time) if they got him and kept Waghorn as their 4th striker..

Bent was the 3rd highest scorer in the Prem last season!
Welbeck has bundles of talent and time to grow both physically and mentally.
Campbell I can't say I've followed too closely since he left us.
For a team like Sunderland, I think they're doing ok!

Campbell was coming on in leaps and bounds last season, and always looked to have talent, and be suited to the Premier League.

If I was Bruce I'd have few worries about pairing him with Bent as the primary front two, and I'd be happy enough to have Welbeck to bring in when and where appropriate.

But yes, they do need other options, if only as cover for injuries etc - 3 just isn't enough these days.

Don't really know anything about other strikers already at the club... is David Healy still there? Who is Waghorn? Anybody else?

The Zog's already handed in a transfer request, I'd be very surprised if he's not on Wearside by the end of the transfer window. Would expect another striker to be signed too, be that Gyan or even someone like Crouch

Bruce said he wont be getting Crouch.. its on skysports.com

If they buy a winger, another striker and keep Waghorn I think SAF will be well pissed off.. I am sure no such thing will happen though.. Surely SAF has taken assurances from Bruce about Welbeck's playing time.. If all that fails I am sure we will have a last option with a recall clause in his contract one which can be triggered if things are not going as well as hoped..

I'd assume he's only gone there on the proviso that he'll get the matches if he earns them.

He needs a good season there too. I think he'll struggle to ever establish himself at United unless he impresses there.

Waghorn has an incredibly silly name. But then I guess Bent does too.

Maybe that should be their starting line-up, sounds like a comedy soft-porn detective spoof, "Waghorn & Bent".

He came on, looked like he might try and get involved as he picked the ball up and laid it off nicely one or two times. And Zenden coming on at the same time made a big difference to Sunderland coming forward. But as they attacked and made more and more offensive changes, he got lost somewhere in the shuffle and didnt really see any of the ball even though Sunderland were the ones coming forward with some urgency. Then Wigan scored against the run of play and I dont think he touched the ball again...

You mean West Brom? Shame he didn't do much, ah well. He'll get his chances anyway, I'm confident he'll impress sooner or later. Preferably sooner.

Was it him out on the wing or Campbell when he came on?

Played last night. Didn't play to his very best from the sounds of it, but Sunderland still won 2-0.
