I think this might be the last year of David. If ten Hag ends up not fancying him I can see him being allowed to go quietly without the +1 being activated.

Right now I would think that's the most likely outcome as I can't see ETH spending a year with De Gea as his #1 and not thinking there's an obvious mismatch that needs to be resolved next summer. Whatever about his issues claiming crosses which I think are permanent, I also think there's a hard limit on how much he can improve in terms of what he does on the ball or in sweeping, even if coached heavily to improve in those aspects.

If it is the case then hopefully he bows out on a relative high. Something like a season of good shot-stopping performances, top four, a cup win and then a nice graceful exit to pastures new.

Meanwhile I think he's 52 appearances from equalling Stepney as the goalkeeper with most appearances in our history? And the most appearances he's ever made in a season for us is 52.

The thing with De Gea is that while I'm acutely aware of all his flaws, I'm still fond of him as a player. And more to the point, part of the reason I'm fond of him is because of his flaws.

For example I know a goalkeeper only being good at shot stopping is definitively a bad thing and a more well-rounded goalkeeper would be a big improvement. But as with poacher CFs who offer absolutely nothing except a near-magical knack for nicking goals, I have a strange fondness for that sub-optimal extreme specialist type player managing to succeed at the highest level. Outliers are a good thing, just perhaps not in the team I actually support.

Similarly while his passive presence can be extremely irritating on the pitch, I still like it in a more general sense. For example, I've seen a couple of journalists note that he spent most of his time at United flatly turning down interview requests and had built no real relationships with journalists over his time here as a result. And while I'm sure that's objectively bad from a career POV, I still kinda admire the general DeGea-ness of that complete lack of engagement.

So I'm very much on his side. I'm just also very sure it's gonna be the losing side.

I reckon Hag thinks he can work with him. The fact he got rid of Henderson backs that up. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw De Gea being more of a sweeper keeper next year. His bad footballing skills are overplayed too. There are far worse goalkeepers in that department.

I don't think the selection of De Gea means he fancies him. I think neither are his cup of tea and Henderson is just easier to shift and eager to move. De Gea has no realistic options unless he wants a huge salary cut and to play for a smaller team.

ETH will presumably try and get De Gea to be a lot more proactive as a keeper, but remember, a large part of De Geas strengths as a keeper come from the fact that he stays on his line all the time. Even if he tries to change his game at this late stage in his career, I would say it's as likely that asking him to change would disrupt his strengths as much as mitigate his weaknesses.

I'm watching the game on LFC TV at a friend's and their commentators talk about the many times Alisson started great attacks with his fantastic distribution.

We are so stuck in our debates about shotstopping vs other abilities that we can't even imagine having such conversation about De Gea's distribution or chances created...

I thought his starting position and decisions on the ball were very different to what we usually see from him. Much more passes on the ground and proactive outside of his box. More of the same please. Pity he got injured. Heaton is such an old school keeper.

David looked very different today. Was promising.

His sweeping was very good, last time he was this proactive was under Van Gaal.

I thought he’d be the easiest player of the lot to improve. All it needed was to tell him to forget everything Jose had told him and go back to what he was doing before.

It looks like maybe he has…

I was surprised not to see Dave look particularly panicky with the ball at his feet. Usually when he receives it I'm just waiting for it to go into the crowd from a hurried hoof. Not saying he turned into prime Paul Scholes or anything. Just was nice not to see him treat the ball like a grenade. Also did a fine job sweeping in behind his defence. Its only preseason but there were definitely some signs today that an old dog can learn new tricks.

Its funny, Ten Hag was screaming at Heaton to keep it on the deck when he booted it out that one time needlessly.

De Gea is weird. I never felt his footballing ability was ever a weakness, though it turned into one, but I never thought it was a talent thing. He has a good touch and has shown a very good ability at passing it around before. Random feck ups would happen but that's it. Sweeping he just never did and serially obviously an issue, but coaching can at least help improve his decision making on the ball and sweeping. Let's hope.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I remember a time when his ability on the ball was a real strength. But for some weird reason it got worse and worse until he became the panicky hoof merchant of the last few seasons. There’s always been a decent footballer under there somewhere. Be awesome if ETH could get his mojo back.

When he joined us he was doing Cruyff turns against on rushing attackers and his distribution used to be good.

If this is the De Gea that we are going to see this year then he may even win me over. We all know he can make the saves but there were a few times today (3 off the top of my head) where De Gea was off his line quick to snuff out danger when in the past he would have stayed on his line and either had to make a save or concede a goal. Today he didn't get his clean sheet because of the saves he made. He got his clean sheet because of the saves he didn't have to make. Well done...

People forget he was keeper for a Spain U21 side that was super at keeping the ball and playing out from the back. I think years of playing for coaches who had no interest in that part of his game took its toll. I have never subscribed to this notion that he would never be able to adapt to a amore proactive style.

Yup. Was great to see and radically different to his usual approach. No wonder he pulled a muscle!

The biggest concern I always had with de Gea is the aerial duels. Which can't really be trained out of him IMO, just who he is. But I'm sure he can be coached to be at least decent with his on ball decision making, as you said, when he was younger he was known as being a very good ball playing goalkeeper. When there's no build up plan, players look clueless and will make mistakes.

I remember in his debut season, De Gea did a feint on Van der Vaart and sent him to the phantom zone. I always considered him to be good on the ball, but it went to shit from the Mourinho era onwards.

I’m glad with what I saw yesterday - felt like we could finally play a higher line with an extra defender as the goalkeeper.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
I remember him sweeping up under LVG - but I can’t remember if he had a good season? He’s always been fine technically - he regularly put the ball onto fellaini’s chest during the Jose days - The key thing is giving him passing options so he doesn’t panic.

I would love to see him develop the sweeping side of his game and playing out from the back and for the "not a modern goalkeeper", "not in the top 10 GK's in the league", "ten hag wont fancy him" calls from FT experts to disappear.

It's been particularly tiresome and borderline disrespectful considering what his net contribution to the team has been. The funniest thing is that the only frame of reference and the basis for these calls being made is that Pep didn't fancy Joe Hart - It's actually laughable.

It's a part of his game I've just never seen. By Varane's comments, were previous managers telling de Gea to stay on his line?

I think it’s just coaching.

I don’t think he has exactly been told to necessarily do it so ultimately didn’t practice it.

It seems like something Ten Hag has come out and told him to do which is great because a more all rounded De Gea is a scary asset to have.

That was 10 years ago.

But, you could also say that people ignore his 3 years of terrible form following the last world cup. That he was behind Kepa for the national team and is currently behind Simon, Raya and Sanchez.

I hope he can up his game and keep playing like he did yesterday, would love to be proved wrong about him. There's also a chance for some world cup redemption for him if he can get back in the squad.

We'll see how he does when there is some serious pressure on him to do it.

Any update on De Gea and his hamstring?

Definitely played sweeper keeper the other day and for the best part looked comfortable. Would like him not to be injured so he could carry on with it on the tour ideally.

Im so surprised he didnt save the goal, as he usually kicks those away. That was one of the things he was known for (and weirdly enough criticised for initially)

He was involved in the lead up to the goals by putting some nice passes out which was great to see.
