You are talking about two of the PL greats, possibly even transcending that - Schmeichel is often considered top five all time greatest goalies - greatest of all time by quite a few. He was never as dominant as either. He had arguably even greater reflexes than Schmeichel, and both could pull off unbelievable saves, more so than VDS was capable of. At his prime, DDG was also good in one on ones. Schmeichel, however, was also a brilliant shot stopper, but attackers were genuinely scared of him one on one, and he would dominate the box - with one hand if he had to. He also commanded the defense like a (very angry) general. VDS was completely different, but he hardly made mistakes at all - was great at organizing his defense and had this uncanny ability of just being exactly where the shot came. Amazing positional sense, great with both feet and overall a brilliant distributor, especially for his generation of goalies.

Probably depends on the fee. It was a mistake to get rid of him anyway in my option. Absolutely clueless move from Ten Hag.

I agree with everything you have said. Im not necessarily trying to knock De Gea, I liked him and thought he was a good goalkeeper. Worthy of appreciation? Yes, definitely.

Bit of a strange take. That short lived Smalling and Blind partnership were very good in their own right. De Gea was great at times individually too but they all worked together on fairly even footing. Smalling covered larger areas with his speed and won plenty of aerials, whilst Blind nullified attackers with his smart positioning and of course was putting a passing masterclass for us; these were all things De Gea wasn't good at himself.

Nothing will ever convince me Smalling was a good defender.

Also we saw his goalkeeping when he came Old Trafford last week. Wouldn’t be able to take contact against a 5 year old.

Onana is terrible but a lot of the hate has clouded people’s judgment - he’s not the worst ever like people are pretending. It’s an easy way to defend Amorim ‘ah we have the worst ever goalkeeper and striker’

He’s our worst starting keeper in the PL era at least. I’d take Bosnich, PIG, Howard, Carroll, 3rd season Barrhez, even a latter day Jim Leighton over Onana.

The stark difference is all those players got binned and replaced. This is our third season of Onana, and he’s been nothing but awful.

Barthez was brilliant in his first year, Bosnich has some really bad off the field issues, was not a good keeper, but still won the league. When it was clear neither was good enough, Fergie binned them. Bosnich got dropped in his one and only season, and replaced. Still better than Onana, that’s how bad he is.

Howard has some mistakes in him, but not as many as Onana.

I could go on. What we had in those days was a manger not afraid to admit he got it wrong, and correct it. Something Ten Haag couldn’t do. Amorim has inherited Onana, and think he’s been severely constrained and can’t replace him. That’s on the club, and is a massive mistake.

I’d rather all those keepers (none of which were good enough) than Onana.
 
De Gea got players player of the year in his final season, and yet was hunted out by clowns for another clown. I don't care if he had the odd clanger in him, I'd take the skinny 2011 Dave over any form of Onana.

Yeah but it’s a daft time to post this as he was probably the only keeper I’ve ever seen who was worse than Onana at penalties.

I won't. We had a campaign ran by people on here, by people in the media to buy a "ball playing goalkeeper" which lead us to tear up a contract we had for a goalkeeper who was a 4 time player of the year, 4 time pfa team of the year, only to spend 50 million on a lad who makes Bayinder look competent.
