Tactical genius today Dave, well done. Wtf was that though? Surely his onfield players today can’t be happy with him there, many were capable of taking a pen.

Never seen that before! Away from shootouts that is

Really odd and bad move for me. Obviously we've seen keepers come on for penalty shootouts but nobody is going to pile on goalie if he comes on and they lose the shootout. I could even understand if United subbed on Henderson today to try and mess with their peno taker's head if we had any subs left at the death.

Most penalties are scored, its expected that they will be and bringing someone on to take one like that just piles that pressure of expectation onto them even more.

Hindsight pseudo-psychology nonsense judging his decision to bring on a penalty taker, but meh
You don't think bringing him on like that to take it puts extra pressure on the player? And that extra pressure might just make him a worse choice of taker than someone already in the pitch?

I still think he'd more likely score than not as you'd have to be really affected to have a less than 50% chance of scoring, and of course Rice may also not have scored anyway.

I just don't see how it can help. Bringing on a goalie, well that can help if it plants the seed that they've brought on their penalty saving specialist. It doesn't work the other way around, no goalie is going to fear being scored against, but taker's do fear missing/having it saved.

I thought Nobles run up to the kick was very nervy. Personally I would feel less nerves when taking a penalty after doing a shit load of excercise and generally feeling a part of the game - like players on the field. Coming on 'stone cold' as Souness put it and taking such a high pressure penalty is crazy the more I think of it.

Everyone is different I suppose. Also, if De Gea went to his right instead of left then Moyes would be laughing.

Of course it does, you are absolutely right. He is coming on cold, hasn’t kicked a ball all day. He also has an age to think about it while he is walking on. It was a terrible call, just like it was in the Euros.

Pick A player who is fully involved and warmed up. Who is already in the correct mindset and focused on the game they are playing in.

It was daft in the euros and it’s the same thing again here.

He bottled it today, forcing his side to sit back and defend that most priceless of points. Such a shame it backfired on him.

Worth pointing out that if Ole did something similar, he'd be crucified.

Moyes is not our manager, so why would we crucify him?
Nor is he managing the biggest club in the league.
You misread the last sentence.

But he did manage the biggest club in the league, the current champions of England at that. He was so horribly out of his depth that he barely lasted 9 months in charge. Not fit to clean Ole's boots.

He's doing a very nice job there, but it's always good to beat him to say the least.

The shocking job he did here must not be forgotten just because he's finally got it right somewhere almost a decade on.

and when he was here, we did crucify him. Yes he is not fit to clean Ole's boots, but why bring up Ole in this thread makes no sense.
No matter who is our coach, media and fans will always criticize them.
It is not like Van Gaal or Jose, had smooth runs either.

Probably because I've seen numerous posts suggesting Moyes is a better manager than Ole.

And make no mistake, if Ole had ordered the side to sit back and defend a point, at home no less, he would have been crucified - or in the internet equivalent of crucified anyway. I just thought it was worthy of mention.

yes when he has the likes of Pogba, Cristiano, Greenwood, Rashford(when fit), Cavani(when available) and Bruno, and if he sits back and still lose 2-1, he should be criticized.

Moyes had RVP, Rooney, Hernandez, Mata, Carrick and many other league title-winning players at his disposal but still failed miserably. He also signed Fellaini.

He proved himself incapable of managing at the highest level.

and your point is?
If Ole being better than Moyes makes you happy, be happy, but fans do not look Moyes a benchmark.
We all know who is our benchmark.

Moyes does what Moyes does - making incompetent decisions, rash and not rational.

Indeed though a few have been climbing out of the woodwork on here recently and trying to paint Moyes as a victim of circumstance whose tenure here was destined to fail through no fault of his.

He has built a bloody good team at Westham. They are a very physical team but enough pace to hurt you.

Before he left us to go to you lot there were a few games where we were winning and he changed the side in the last 5 mins and that led to us drawing or losing a game. Seems like that luck hasn’t left him.

He is a better manager. Doesn't mean he's a good one or better specifically for United

Moyes is the better and so far more accomplished manager.

That can change and he was not suited for Man United doesn't mean hes inherently crap. The premier league is a very high level and a top 8 club is quite high in world football standing.

He's found the perfect level at West Ham - great for upper-mid table PL side but anywhere else he looks out of depth.

Personally, I thought it was the wrong decision what he made by brought on a player who barely kick the ball to take a penalty but this is where football fans don't think rationally enough about other possibility. Moyes probably thought, well, the players that I had on the pitch been poor in converting their penalty and I got one of the proven penalty taker of the club on the bench with experienced to take it and I have one sub left that I can still use. I understand why Moyes did it and also this is an unplanned situation and Moyes needed to make a quick decision so it's very different to Southgate one. Moyes done very well anyway so far at West Ham.

I bet he was all ready to give some gloating post match speech had that worked. Beating Moyes is more enjoyable than almost every other manager. Smug prick. I’ll never forget how arrogant he was with no justification at all while he was here.

Revisionists and the passing of time have done a great job in making out the squad he picked up here was almost non league in quality. And he did amazingly to bravely lead us to the heights of 7th.

Yeah still a few clowns pushing that narrative, you just don't win the league or have back to back 89-90 point finishes with a poor team/squad. It's idiotic to argue otherwise.

We'll never know as LVG needlessly took a chainsaw to the squad but a good manager I think would have got that squad into the top 4 no problem and kept them there for another year or two with the right recruitment (eg not dross like Fellaini, Mata or Falcao etc).

Moyes always shits himself against the big teams. It’s like a inferiority mental block.
11 seasons at Everton and we never beat a top 4 team away from home even in seasons when we were regularly finishing 5th-6th.
It was always bringing a knife to a gunfight approach, backs to the wall and hope for the best to get out alive.
A draw being a great result and the best we could hope for.

I know West Ham were home yesterday but it’s the mentality he carries.

So glad it backfired. No doubt had the penalty went in he would have claimed afterwards how they were the better team and how he deserved more time at United, blah, blah.
