    Indeed.

I frankly don't see why anyone would be overly eager to match (or top) his current contract at United.

Some proper mental gymnastics on display here. Few months ago we all laughed at claims of how Alison is better than Dave. Now after that horrible end of our season we want to cash in on him, give it Romero and Hendo til the end of the season, see if we need another keeper next year. What the actual feck? Are these the same people who call for Ole to be sacked after few months in charge? I'd rather lose this bunch of fickle fans than Ole and De Gea. Shocking stuff.

So are players not allowed to have a dip in their career anymore?

I mean I know he was poor the second half of this season but for goodness sake he also performed unbelievably away at Spurs and won us the game, so I think it's over the top to suggest he is already on the decline at 28.

If he signs a new deal, I would certainly be positive that he would return to his imperious best. If he wants away that's a different story, but if re-signs don't bet against him returning to the absolute peak.

PSG have also been linked with Nevas as well. It really does look like Dave is currently out of options though I guess should he be available on a free next summer that situation could well change

Everything is pointing to him walking for free next year.

Doesn't it just. Wasn't it widely reported when he signed he was on 350k? Amazing how it's now 500k

This is such a horrible situation, no matter how you look at it. Obviously the best solution would be to sell now and replace him with a young, modern keeper (Onana, Maignan) but it looks like no one will pay for De Gea now. Why would they, honestly? He's in such a poor form for a while now and will be available for free next year. Our only hope is PSG, it looks like they have no interest at the moment though.

Losing such a (previously) valuable asset for nothing is just stupid business, but isn't it more preferable to being stuck with him on a huge new contract? There are just so many negative aspects:
    1. Shocking form, blunder after blunder near the end of the season and overall 18/19 performances were poor with few exceptions
    2. Possibly in permanent decline already - he's always been 100% reliant on reflexes, not a commanding keeper (Buffon) or a distributor (Neuer). The same type as Casillas, and we've all seen how rapidly Iker declined once his reflexes became worse at 30.
    3. Pretty much outdated - all the top clubs have active sweeper keepers acting as an extra defender, except Atletico and their Oblak I can't think of any big club with a traditional static keeper like DDG
    4. Questionable character - refuses to sign a new contract, sulks, expects huge salary raise despite awful current performances. Compare it to Ramsey who fought for Arsenal until the end even though he had already signed contract with Juve, DDG is the opposite.

Crazy to think some actually want DDG gone. All keepers have strengths and weaknesses. All keepers have dips in form or make mistakes. DDG is still one of the best in the world and he’s ours. How much better will he be if we upgrade our defence?

Do people seriously now think 28 is too old? Of all of our players he is the one that actually deserves some financial recognition for his srvice over what has been an incredibly hard time for the team.

Got nothing against him staying but won't mind him leaving. He is the one big factor in us missing top 4 plus his winding down the contract and saying absolutely nothing is annoying. Last time he would have left united for madrid without a word goodbye for peanuts had the deal gone through. Clearly lost focus just like before. Maybe it's high time we part ways. United will be alright.

Do you think he is worth around 400k a week? I would respect him more if he was actually worried about his career sliding by, if its just a case of being happy to stay for an obscene amount of money among the circus we are, then I wouldn't be sorry to see him go

There's no place for sentimentality in top football, not anymore. We would be crazy to reward De Gea with new contract after the appalling mistakes throughout previous season. He's been a great keeper for us and we're thankful, but he's hardly a club legend like Casillas and Buffon were for their clubs - both captains, and both were let go once they became liabilities.

Tell me another guy who can do this.

@clarkydaz , the problem for DDG is every other contending club in europe has a class goalkeeper, except maybe PSG and Juventus. Guaranteed league titles with a shot at the CL trophy. I concur with your thoughts. If he is stalling on a new contract because he is worried about the club's ambition, it is reasonable. But if he just wants north of 350k, the club should look at moving on from DDG.

The problem I have is people questioning his ability, when any player can have dips in form. And we have fans who make cringe inducing threads like 'the thought of losing Rashford'. People are saying he is on the decline, like come on. He would look invincible behind a world class defence, not so much behind a defence that parts like the red sea did for Moses against any decent attack.

Some of our fans are quick to pounce on DDG, when he was the only guy keeping us in the top half of the table for a considerable amount of his time here. We deserve home grown heroes like 'Rashy' and 'J-lingz', who speak like 'real' fans would, keep the club's best interests at heart, and put messages on twitter like ' Not the result we wanted, but we are Man Utd, and we go again'. Yes, finish again in 6th place. Yes, we haven't won the PL since SAF because of our GK. Not because we haven't had a functioning attack for 6 years now and have forwards who can't score.

The situation now is, he is not going to renew the contract. We are risking losing 50m+ worth of investment which could be spend elsewhere. And we badly need to rebuild this summer. Adding to the fact that he just had a poor season, selling him now for 50m+ isn't bad deal at all. "he is shit anyway" is more of an expression for the fans who are genuinely disappointed by him (for keep dragging the contract asking unrealistic wages, while playing poorly and costing us crucial points etc)

His individual mistakes (not caused by bad defending, but his own horrendous goalkeeping) cost us more points than we needed to make top 4. Among the 24 goalkeepers who made at least 10 appearances in PL this season, he's statistically the 18th "best". Forget about comparing ourselves to elite clubs, forget about Champions League, the 18/19 version of De Gea isn't even good enough for PL. Do you want me to post a compilation of all his recent fails?

No more sentiment, it's bad enough that we sentimentally appointed a non-manager to take charge.

You'd swear that match was the only time a goalkeeper ever made some saves that led to 3 points the way people harp on about it.
Plus, if you actually watched the match, it was more poor finishing than amazing saves.

I think you are being pedantic. Loads of posters are hammering him for his poor displays this season, I was only pointing out a display where he actually won the game for us. I’m not going on and on about it, I’m just trying to offer a different view.

it’s hard for me to think anyone is worth £400k per week but judging DDG over his time here as a whole and not making a stupid knee jerk reaction and getting rid of a true world class keeper.

We’re in a rubbish period and knowing we have a great (and he is great) keeper will help as we rebuild. No different to the notion of letting pogba go. Hold on to our best players and add to them.

I agree, no place for sentimentality but seriously, DDG deserves way more respect than some on here are allowing.

In my whole life as a football fan I can’t remember a keeper that has lifted me onto my feet with the sheer awesomeness of his saves on such a consistent basis. He is more than capable of being a legend.

Hope he signs new deal, I think he's waiting to see who comes in first.? I think he will stay and get new deal, unless he really wants to go, then we have to leave him go this season for a fee!

Not next season free, that would be bad business .

I apologise, I didn't mean to single you out, it's just that nobody seems to be able to discuss the possibility that maybe he's just not worth £400,000 a week or whatever it is without someone bringing up that Tottenham game.

It was one game, I pretty much guarantee that every teams first choice goalkeeper had at least one match this season where they were a huge factor in winning 3 points for their team, so what?
If they were pretty horrendous for months on end afterwards then it negates that one match and therefore they deserve to be scrutinised.

What's even more infuriating in this instance is that the consequences of those errors cost us the top four, and therefore millions of pounds, so I think fans are entitled to be a bit aggrieved at that particular player (regardless of what they've achieved in the past) now being handed a bumper new contract, the timing is shocking.

This has been discussed before but can you imagine if Pogba or Lukaku were asking for more money off the back of a season like De Ge has had, there would be nobody in their corner.

(BTW, I will point out in David's defence that there is no actual evidence that he himself is making these demands, it's all just media speculation at this stage)

Burnley fans think Tom Heaton has pulled off better saves. And tbh, I don't think many regular observers would disagree on Heaton. Heaton's saves at Old Trafford in the last two seasons have been of the highest calibre. One save in particular against Lukaku is better than any save De Gea has made imho.

At least under Ole it seems like we won’t be needlessly discarding the Heatons and Keanes and Pearsons coming through the academy.

Yes, Heaton can make spectacular saves. But there are levels to this sh***. If you think Heaton can make better saves than this, then we can just agree to disagree.

I am just waiting for the cafe meltdown when we have Sergio romero/dean henderson between the sticks next season. Possible thread titles next season may include (but not limited to),

"Why did we let De gea leave for 30 million?"
"How was De Gea the player?"
"De Gea would have saved that..."
    "Sergio romero should retire."

As they say, you never really know the worth of something until it is gone.

Yeah, because the Heatons and the Keanes and the Pearsons will help us become the EPL champs and become a dominant force in Europe again. Are you guys even reading some of the things you are posting here? Those players are not UNITED quality. Even if we are shite right now, certain standards have to be maintained so that we can claw back lost ground.

What De Gea can pull off regarding saves, Heaton can dream about. And burnley fans can do one.

Heaton has been just as impressive for a struggling team if not more than De Gea. But keep kidding yourself by overlooking the 'timid ones' flaws.

Christ what has happened to this place. Tom fecking Heaton has been more impressive than David De Gea. We should try and bring him in then as a replacement, we are hardly going to notice are we?

"Certain standards have to be maintained" I dread what will happen if DeGea maintains his midtable standards as well as the other clowns like Matic, Mata (offered new contract and fans favourite), Rashford, Lingard, Lukaku, Martial, list goes on. Truth of matter is DeGea doesn't seem the same. He has conceded a lot of goals from unexplainable errors, which first started with him throwing the ball in the net vs Arsenal at Old Trafford when Mourinho was still in charge. He continued to leak goals and commit mistakes that saw us finish 6th. If he leaves I won't mourn.

Mate let’s fecking get to that first and see from it. You are actually telling me that once we upgrade the clowns we have playing in defense for about 5-6 years we will see De Gea’s flaws. Let’s get to it first shall we.

We can't just keep blaming the defenders infront of him. Smalling as a defender has been good, even if he is below average on the ball. Shaw defensively has been good too, but his problem is going the other way, where his natural instinct seems to tell him to become the 3rd CB rather than bomb up and down the pitch.

Do you think a keeper who is adept at commanding his area would benefit our backline?

De Gea has proven to be much much better GK than any of our defenders in their respective positions. I'm not even going to discuss further on that, come one.

Yeah I feel a more commanding keeper might benefit our backline, but it won't make players like Jones, Young, Smalling and even Lindelof better than what they actually are. Bottom line we need better players and that's it.
