Mid 50s. Sad news. I feel like real change is going to have to be made with regards to head injuries in football, and even just the cumulative effects of regular headers. I wonder if the current generation of forwards in the game who largely shy away from aerial duels have one eye on their future health.

They don't head the ball in kids football anymore, think its U13 when it starts. Not sure that really changes much but its a start, can't see how football, NFL, rugby etc. can ever really change their rules without completely changing the sport to avoid this.Mid 50s. Sad news. Yes truly horrible, my dad also had dementia for the last seven years of his life. Wouldn't wish that illness on your worst enemy. That's horrible, my dad had dementia, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
There should be more research done on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, and perhaps a ban on headers at all levels which would make the game more interesting since everyone would have to improvise and get more skilful with their feet like Spain. High kicks should still be disallowed as dangerous play of course.
Windass played as recently as the 2000s no? CTE is caused by repeated minor brain trauma e.g. header drills against walls or heading the ball regularly as a defender or striker. These head traumas accumulate over the years to cause memory loss or dementia.I think heading the ball is nowhere near as prevalent in today's game as it used to be.
Teams very rarely do that these days, even in the lower divisions. And of course the footballs are lighter than they were even in the 80s.
My granddad died of dementia last year, but he was 86. Windass is only in his 50s. Dementia is horrible but even worse if it’s early onset like in this case. That's horrible, my dad had dementia, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
