I mean Noble doesn't shift across quick enough when Rice goes out to RLC.

Loves that high pointless sideway pass like Henderson.

Hazard shouldn't have scored that goal. Was very poor from quite a few West Ham players..

He might turn out to be a decent player eventually but I get a Eric Dier vibe from him.
I said the same thing.

If he if not playing centerback then don’t even bother picking him up.

I haven't read through the thread to see if this is a common idea already but from watching a numerous amount go videos I came up with this opinion.

As a CDM he is ok he is a great ball winner but offers nothing going forward and for the modern game that won't cut it.

Now what I do see is the potential for a WORLD CLASS center back! I think he has all the makings to be a top top player in that position. He is two footed tall strong and has a great reading the game. He even said his idol was John Terry growing up.

Once again never seen the kid play live so going off of what I saw.

In fact he reminds me exactly of Eric Dier.
That's what I see too, but I think he'll be a better player than Dier. I like his mobility, tenacity and his defensive awareness, really tracks runners well.

Would have been a better player back when most teams had a 10 they built their attack around.

I actually think Dier has better technical ability then Rice he is much more competent and composed on the ball. However as you stated Rice has better awareness of the game and is good at reading plays. All the makings of a good centerback if given the chance to play in his most natural position.

He is alot better than Dier on the ball imo.
I think he'd be a decent signing but at no more than £40m.

He's getting ridiculously overrated but I wouldn't judge him on this game some - I would still take him here if he came in cheapish.

Not one bit. Not united material if we have to pay for him. If he came through Academy i wouldn't have any problem with him being on the bench.

But he is so not the answer to pair with pogba.

Are you saying if a player comes through our academy, he deserves more games/places on the bench compared to a player of equal quality that we had to buy? That is a bizarre statement!

As for Rice, he lacks pace, game passed by him defensively today. Yet decent on the ball and tackling. £40m max.

He means if he came from the academy we wouldn't have to pay crazy money for him.

If we buy him he wil probably cost £60mil

We need first team players not bench material. Why would you spend 40 m on squad player right now? Doesn't make sense, but if he came through the academy as a squad player than he would be useful just like Mctominay .

He's 20. Gonna have some better games and some not good ones.

If he didnt and played really well every week at that age we'd have to pay Ronaldo money for him.

(I mean what we sold him for not what we bought him for...)

As for the first goal, he put pressure on the player on the ball and the ball was passed to Hazard. Its Noble who confronts Hazard and gets beaten too easily for a player that experienced.

We can say its best if the other CMs put pressure on players further forward and Rice sits back and defends in front of the defense. That does make more sense.

But what if those arent West Ham's tactics? We dont know. Once he puts pressure on Loftus Cheek he isnt going to get back in time to catch up with a player the speed of Hazard. Not many people will.

He did at least signal over to Noble that he should leave his man and cover the position Hazard was moving into.

So its kinda hard to say without knowing exactly what his orders are for West Ham. But ideally its other West Ham midfielders pressing like he did so he can sit. A bit of a mistake? Sure. I don't remember any 20 year old players that didnt make a mistake

He's not good enough, and never will be good enough for a top side. West Ham is his level, he's another Mark Noble. Good trier and gets about the pitch in a good manner but it isn't good enough

We couldn't be this stupid to buy him though? Surely? If we are looking for a young English midfielder then it should be James Ward-Prowse for me

Dier certainly hits better long passes, but I'm not sure there's a huge difference on the ball otherwise.

The big problem with Rice as a DM is basically that he's an English defender, so he doesn't look to get on the ball constantly, and consequently buildup play is hurt.

I wonder if he'd be best in the role Conor Coady plays at Wolves. Doubt we'll play with 3 at the back fulltime, though it might suit our forwards.

He didnt have a great game and people are making out that he isn't a standout for a 20 year old. So here's a reminder of what he can do on a good day in a big match

Liverpool

He made 8 tackles and 2 interceptions on the day and was West Ham's 2nd or 3rd best player in a 1-1 draw. He was more impressive defending than on the ball

And here's Arsenal in a derby 2 days before his 20th birthday

This time he made 2 tackles, 3 interceptions, 2 clearances and 1 blocked shot. He scored and was again one of West Ham's best players. He made the 2nd most passes for West Ham this time behind Noble so was better on the ball than the Liverpool match.

I dont think anyone has suggested that he's a top DM. But then again I don't really remember a top DM being around at 20 years old.

He's just a young player who can put in a good shift helping the backline who has plenty of time to hopefully improve as he gets more experience

I would currently take neves all day every day over this lad. Let him get another season or 2 at West Ham to develop. For the fees being quoted He’d get eaten alive here!
I think 99% would rather have Neves but even City backed off because of his supposed 100m price tag. There is absolutely no way anyone is going to pay that amount for him.

I like the idea of wolves tbh could be a good stepping stone for the lads.

100 million, Jaysus!
You’d imagine if we were in for him and he wanted to leave wolves wouldn’t stop him for a tidy profit but nobody is ever going to pay 100 million for him. They got him for 14 million. That was a great deal in hindsight.

Neves is 2 years older and as you would expect, he's better overall.

Rice does most of the defending himself in West Ham's midfield, he doesnt have a player like Moutinho or Deddoncker with him and Neves has both of them who average over 3 tackles each per game which is more than Neves' 2.2 with Neves making more interceptions than either of them. So Neves defensively benefits more from Wolves combative style while Rice is more of a lone specialist in his role in midfield.

On the ball obviously Neves is more technical and a better passer.

The main point is that you would expect him to be better if hes 2 years older and that Neves will probably need more help defending than Rice would. While Rice would need more help attacking than Neves would.

We seem to be losing the midfielder who is a great help to a DM so Rice might be easier to fit in and also much cheaper. But Neves is ideally a better choice if we can get the moving pieces needed for him which is either Fred or another midfielder helping him.

Really good post. : )
Neves reminds me of carrick, keeps it moving, has a lovely pass through the lines, reads the game well and scores the odd cracker, isn’t tackling like a mad man.

Rice really does remind me of an Eric Dier type player. He could be a very good player in the right system but the prices are absurd for what he’s showing. He’s just an interesting prospect at the moment and I don’t think he’d walk into any of the other top teams midfields. So taking that into account I think he’s pretty much currently being priced out of any decent move. He’s better off playing where he is now. At the moment the hype is too much. It’ll level off again soon I’d say.

I think what we really need are quality creative midfielders that also put in tackles. Bernardo Silva being the template. Somebody like Bruno fernandes would make us a lot stronger than someone like Rice.

One of the major differences why players like Rice get criticised and youngsters playing abroad don't is people actually see Rice play every week and not just highlights on youtube.

Which doesn’t make them better or worse than foreign youngsters just closer and often unfair scrutiny

Eden is a defensive mids worst nightmare but honestly he got tossed around by Loftus Cheek in a way I don't want to see from our holding mid.

If its not rice it's fine - but we need a player like rice who can stand to do the dirty job whilst Pogba & the other midfielder takes the plaudits.

If he was playing for Ajax, some of the muppets on here would be creaming themselves
Why? Even someone as absurdly talented as De Jong gets alot of criticism on here and he's not being seen in a week to week basis. In fact when he is seen he's normally playing big sides not impressing vs the everyday prem mediocrity.

It’s going to happen;he’s young and learning.

Not clamouring for us to sign him but that sounds a bit dismissive based on a game against a good player, who I might add has looked pretty average in some games I’ve seen

Prem mediocrity? Rice has had impressive performances against the top 5. Scored the winner against Arsenal didn’t he?

As for De Jong yes he has impressed against ‘big’ sides but the majority have come in the bread and butter that is the mediocre Dutch league

What's the point of signing Declan Rice when we have a similar player in MCTominay? I really don't see the point why we should be interested in the first place apart from the fact that I would prefer someone who's much more technical and would contribute to helping us dominate the midfield and possession.

We had a similar player to Carrick in Fletcher, but that worked out okay

If you think McT is the answer to our midfield problems then we really have accepted mediocrity

I'm not saying MCTominay is the answer to our midfield. All I'm saying is I don't know why we're interested in Declan when we have a similar kind of player in MCTominay. They are both defensive midfielders with little creativity in their arsenal. They don't also seem to have the range of passing needed in the holding midfield role. They are both young and have yet to hit their prime. We don't even know MCTominay's ceiling yet but what I know is that he didn't look out of place against a world-class midfielder such as Verratti whereas Declan Rice is still just a local champion.

I would rather we keep developing MCTominay than splash huge money on Declan Rice.
