Anybody seen this?

There's this new software that's been released, and all you need to do is input a few photos/screenshots of somebody and a video you want to put their face on, and the software uses some kind of AI to train itself to put the persons face onto the video. Some of the videos are really well done. Of course, everybody is using it for putting celebrities on porn vids and stuff, which while is obviously not great, it opens up loads of possibilities for other things that could be quite scary.

Phil DeFranco did a video talking about it

Here's a BBC article on it - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-42912529

And here's one of the few non porn ones I've seen

It's so realistic, and the software has only just come out.

Hard to practice leaving a technology in the gutter. But I do hope we are at the very least able to not have this kind of software in the arms of "normal" people... Best case completely ditched or reworked for other purposes.

Yup quite scary stuff. Basically even video evidence cannot be trusted soon as people are making convincing fakes with their home computers.

If you filmed the Loch Ness monster now, no-one will believe you now.
@Olly is there no filter or screen you can run a vid to see if it's been doctored?

Very bad, just imagine the stuff you can do with it in a negative way. Think the negatives outweigh any positives

It’s all digital now, there won’t be any negatives involved.

So if there really is a golden shower tape featuring Trump it will be labeled deepfake thus useless?

Nah they will be easy for forensics to analyse.

That gif above, this technology is scary.
I dunno, it looked imperfect to me - a slight delay in movement & expression.

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
Presumably any use of this will leave signs that are easily identifiable by the right software. It might be a problem for more casual situations, but I doubt anyone is going to prison over it.

Once the genie is out of the bottle then there really isn't any way to put it back in, so this may very well be only the beginning, in time as with all technology, it will improve, so it will be very interesting to see quite how far people go with this.

Not to sound paranoid but if the software is now being released how likely is it that there already is a version in the hands of say government agencies, large corporations etc?

Saw another article about this and somewhere in it someone mentioned that some of the porn fakes were using facial images of some young actors before they were 18 so it raised the question whether it could be considered child pornography.

Indeed. I'm just thinking from the philosophical standpoint. In practice it's as good as impossible to remove technology that has been spread to the masses.

As a person in IT I’m surprised we haven’t seen this sooner. Especially with all of the digital effects in movies. They’ve been doing this type of thing for a while with stunt doubles and cgi.

I had a look at the subreddit for this. It’s pretty disturbing that porn is driving it. That Melania gif is...

Disturbing but not surprising. Without Porn the Internet would have take years longer to take off.

There is no containing this. It's not a single algorithm that is used to do it. You can use similar techniques to that employed in the neural style transfer algorithm and with a decent cluster get something believable. Especially when you don't need high resolution.

That's strange...I know him from The Tudors (in which he was good, tbh) but thought he was a young Travolta in that gif. :D

I've looked at a few of these, for science, and there is one major hurdle that will make them blatantly obvious most of the time.

You can't fake the shape of the head. I saw one two months ago, or so, and it was hilariously bad. I saw another one a couple days ago, and it had improved so much. What they can't change however (at least so far), is the shape of the head. Right now they all look like, "Oh that's so and so on someone else head". Sometimes you can't even tell who it is supposed to be because the shape of your head is a pretty big part of how your face actually looks.

Isn't that solved by finding someone with the same head shape?

My original post was much longer and actually detailed the process of people running around with digital scanners, getting accurate measurements of the actresses heads, and then finding porn stars with similar heads.

But I deleted it, because I didn't want to seem like too much of a weirdo!

OK, I saw some of those videos and sure, they look a bit off, but I'd assume it's mostly due to movements and interactions.

If it was, let's say, a politician giving a speech behind a podium, always in the same place and not moving much, it wouldn't b that hard to find an actor with the same head form features.

What are the implications for surveillance cams for instance?
