Possibly, but the percentage of youth players that actually make it is so small you just don't know. Garner is definitely a talent but plays a role that players usually don't make their own at a high level until mid 20's. I'd love to see him come through, but for a big club like United we should never not buy players because we think we have young, unproven players coming through.

If Garner is good enough, he will break into the team, if not then so be it. Competition should only be a good thing, the goal of young players should be to develop their game so that they can break through, not United choosing not to invest in the squad and taking chances on young players instead.

Same with Greenwood, Gomes and any other youth players. Bringing them into the squad now might do more harm than good. People always reference the class of 92, but compare the players they had around them vs what we have now. Poor examples and lack of leaders/role models, combined with a team lacking confidence is not a good environment to bring young players through.
I agree. We are lacking leaders on the pitch and in the dressing room. Someone to guide these young players through a game and give them confidence.

He should be a priority for us this summer. Brilliant performance again today. Proper box to box midfielder who makes some crucial plays on both sides of the pitch.

As good as Partey for me and has been in top form all season. Raphael Honigstein was waxing lyrical about him last week and said he does the job of three and referred to him as 'storm Denis'

He will be very expensive. He's probably Gladbach's most important player, they will likely be in the Champions League, and other clubs will be in for him.

Think it was one of the transfer threads, I think we should bringing Zakaria/Partey or Phillips in. In a dream scenario they'd be coming in alongside Grealish and Sancho.

If he's a box to box midfielder, then he shouldnt be a priority, in my opinion. A holding midfielder and/or an attacking midfielder should be priority.

He can play both the #6 and #8 and it has been reported that we're looking for midfielders that fit that profile.

Raphael Honigstein: It’s been a windy few days in the Lower Rhine region. Firstly, Borussia Monchengladbach’s game against 1. FC Koln had to be cancelled last week thanks to Storm Sabine. Then on Saturday, Storm Denis blew away Fortuna Dusseldorf at the Merkur-Spiel Arena, clocking in at a top speed of 35 km/h. It’s useful when you can conjure up your very own hurricane. This Denis, last name Zakaria, happens to be in the pay of Borussia. He wears the No 8 shirt but often plays three positions in one.

Reported that we're looking for a midfielder who can play as a 6 and 8? I havent seen that.

I personally believe we should be looking at a specialist to play as a 6, rather than someone who is decent in both positions. We have Fred and McTominay who can do that.

The only reason such players are called specialists is due to them being limited going forward and the chap at Leicester, Ndidi is one example. Zakaria could easily sit and play to a high level but has alot more in his locker depending on what the manager expects.

Conversely the reason these players ‘can do jobs’ in two positions is because they’re not good enough to specifically tick all the boxes for that one specified role.

It would severely limit someone like Zakaria to make him just sit and concentrate on shielding the defence. He could more than do that against top level opposition. But against 90% of the teams we come up against, you just don't need such a limited player when there's players like Zakaria who could do both.

It's actually a no brainer signing him and I posted tweets in January where it was reported that we were looking for players who could play both the #6 and #8 role, which I'm strongly in favour of.

You were spot on in January and you are spot on again. Would love him here. Especially because he is Swiss. He is a monster and getting better and better.
Funny how some users compare a Matic-type player with him. Also he would be on a different level than Fred.

I agree.

However, the one situation in which this would make sense is if Ole decides that 352 is the way forward. I personally hope he doesn't, but I wouldn't bet my mortgage on it.

That's very high praise Adnan, if that's the case Zakaria should be a priority. I rate Ndidi highly by the way, but he would cost a fortune and I feel we do lack a proper CDM, someone that will shield the defense much better than past it Matic and easy to bypass Fred.

It won't be easy to sign him if Raphael Honigstein's piece on Gladbach and Zakaria is to go by. Honigstein says that most of Europe is watching him very closely.

He can shield the defence and can also play at CB and is also very good at breaking forward from midfield hence Honigstein labelling him 3 players in 1. It would be a great signing if we can get him IMO.

How much is Zakaria valued at? and how does he compare against the likes of Soumare?

Seems a similar type player to Partey. I guess the one positive is that he's younger but they are likely to cost the same, as Partey has a low release clause for a player of his quality. I'd be ok with getting either of the two, it doesn't make sense for us to get a Ndidi type when we get so much of the ball usually and we need more dynamic and forward thinking players.

If I was to guess I'd say he could be bought for around £45m give or take alittle.

He's well ahead of Soumare due to being further along with his development but both are of a similar profile. Soumare still has things to learn regards defending space in behind, which is something that will come with more games and coaching on the training ground. Zakaria doesn't have any significant weakness and is ready to come straight into our first 11. He would probably be along with Maguire our best CB too if we deployed him there. Which shows what a player he is for Marco Rose and the tactical flexibility he offers at a very high level.

They're similar players and I'd be happy with either tbh. But I am leaning towards Zakaria slightly due to his ability to play as a CB and he's also a more physically imposing player too in comparison.

It was reported by Marca last year that Partey signed a new contract with Atleti until 2023 with a €50m buyout. But it seems the player is more than happy to be at Atleti and isn't looking to move.

Klopp has tried and failed to sign him a couple of seasons ago according to Raf Honigstein. But I'm not sure it makes alot of sense right now.

Bild also reported in December that United were ready to put forth a €60m offer for Zakaria in the winter window but the player wasn't available for transfer at the time.
