Did we deserve a penalty in that game?

It was clear from quite early on that Atkinson would give us nothing. He's a dirty Leeds fan and his history of officiating our matches is questionable to say the least.
May his arse turn inside out....

Honestly I thought the Zouma was a stonewall and the other not penalties.

But after watching them back the first was also stonewall. There knees clash together and again the defender got now if the ball

They tried to rob us today.

First one no way. Second one, I thought so live, but after the replay, it really did seem that Ronaldo initiated the contact to me and then did a pretty good dive. Third one was stonewall pen, but pretty sure the ref thought Ronaldo was play acting too much on the first two which cost him the third. Terrible officiating.
Thing is with VAR that's not how fouls work anymore.

Also the first was probably a penalty. Knees clash together and defender gets none of the ball

The first two were not penalties under the current rules I think but that last one should have been given no question.
What is the current rule anyway? I mean West Ham player left a leg out there in Ronaldo's path and Ronaldo obviously collided as any player would. Does player need to be hacked down by machete or something to be foul now?

We should have had two penalties that game. The coufal one was a penalty and the zouma one was an absolute stonewall one not given. What’s var for if it can’t overturn such obvious mistakes.

That one was quite literally - and it is an overused word but it does apply here - unbelievable. I couldn't actually believe that a supposedly trained and qualified referee looked at that in the VAR room and said 'nah, that's not a penalty'. Were they having a coffe break? Was he busy wanking to PornHub? What happened?
The only explanation that comes remotely close to making sense is that they straight-up decided to flaunt the rules and deny United a penalty because they didn't want us to score. Nothing else can possibly have been the case. There's no conceivable scenario where they looked at that and genuiely didn't believe it should be a penalty. They knowingly chose to rob us. If it had been one single decision throughout the match, I could maybe give them the benefit of the doubt; but it was so many, and it's clear that they had an agenda. I don't often say something like that, but this time it's just undeniable. You can't make honest mistakes that many times. It was a deliberate attempt to cost us points.

So, just seen highlights of this week's games and there has been a mess in all the games in terms of the refereeing.

Southampton correctly awarded a pen against City, then overturned for some bizzare reason by VAR. Leeds not given one and VAR not overturning that, our match and even the Leicester match where the refs were crap.

The first and last one will be given in other games this season and VAR will not overrule the decision.

Coufal's leg came out and not a little bit, he is stretching for the ball. He makes enough contact to bring Ronaldo down, don't see how it wasn't given by the ref in normal play.

Zouma's tackle is odd, given the fact the ref gave a similar one against Pogba where there was no contact at all.

Atkinson was poor throughout the game.

The Zouma one is incredible. Doesn't touch the ball, obviously takes Ronaldo. I'm a fan of VAR but if you have incompetent officials operating it, you'd be as well not having it.

Very selective of the image, he pulled the leg back quickly after that still, then you see Ronaldo slightly change running direction to make sure contact. No penalty!

Second one at the end was a penalty.
He didn't change direction to make contact, his legs were there because he was changing the way he was moving to go past Coufal.

The two tackles were both clear penalties. The first I can sort of understand not being given initially as it looks like Ronaldo throws himself into the challenge, but on the replay you can see the defender sticks his leg out after the ball is passed to block Ronaldo being able to get to it. And actually I say sort of because Atkinson is looking at it from all of 2 metres away FROM an angle where you can see clearly that it's a foul.

The second tackle at the end there just isn't even a debate. Only logical explanation for that is they just deliberately didn't give it despite knowing it was just because Ronaldo went down over the challenge? You can't watch that back and come to the honest conclusion it's not a foul.

Our referees are an absolute pathetic joke. They deliberately make wrong calls to suit a narrative rather than just officiate the games to the rules. VAR is a problem in that it's completely exposed that this is what they do as the excuse of the "game being too fast" or not seeing an incident clearly is removed.

The last one not being given is real bad...that's a glaring error. Kinda absurd that we have a system so that these things don't happen and then these things happen.

The Leicester vs Brighton game was just amateurish. Maupay clearly grabbed Vestergaard's arm as he was jumping and pulled him off balance. Seeing how Vestergaard is absolutely huge it was a clear tactic to help someone get a header in.

Whoever was doing VAR clearly only had eyes for Vestergaard handling the ball.

I know it’s a bit nerdy but it annoys me when people say things like “we should have got two penalties from the game”.

Had we got one penalty, that would have changed the rest of the game dynamics and therefore there second penalty situation wouldn’t have happened.

Rant over

Technically both of the penalties today could've happened, even if the first was awarded.

The most frustrating part of this is when we get a ‘soft’ one this season no one will look back at the horrendous decisions not in our favour today.

That 3rd penalty is stonewall, if that’s not getting picked up by VAR then it’s a useless tool. To then have the Shaw one given [which was another stonewall penalty] with VAR intervention is a pisstake. Atkinson & the VAR ref we’re terrible today. Result aside, we should be more vocal as a club about today’s officiating.

My thoughts too, but can almost forgive the 1st. The 2nd....does he hate Christiano? Only reason I could see not to give it.

If I understand this correctly, the refs decision about AWBs pen was so bad that VAR couldn’t overturn it. They can’t overturn run of the mill free kicks and the phantom foul was deemed to have happened before the AWB foul.
It’s shocking, it really is

In fairness in the AWB one the West ham players where offside so it made it irrelevant.

The last one was a pen, no way the prior two were. I have no idea how VAR doesn't give that Zouma one.

Ronaldo likes to seek a penalty we all know this. We'll have plenty of claims not given because most of the time they won't be.

I can understand why the first one wasn't given. The second one, only extremely biased people would say that wasn't as clear as a day. A total disaster it wasn't given.
Thats what I thought. I understood why the third one wasn't given because Ronaldo was falling before contact was made. But the second one seemed so obvious. He stuck his boot right across Ronaldo. The commentators thought the opposite though for both. Regardless, everyone seems to agree that at least one penalty should have been given.

Last 1 was 100% stone walled. How the ref & VAR missed it is beyond comprehension. Other one maybe Ronaldo needed to do a Zouma to earn his free kick

We should have had 4. The Ronaldo one I think the ref got right though.

I didn’t get to watch the game or any highlights but the obvious answer to this question is yes.

First and last challenges on Ronnie in the area were stonewall penos.

That said I was shocked West Ham weren’t awarded one after AWB’s challenge.

VAR completely useless yet again.

New season, new issues.
The first week or two, referees/Var were applauded for not blowing for the softer challenges and 'letting the game flow".
However, of course now it has escalated to where actual fouls and penalties are not being given. The standard of officiating needs to improve.

We definitely had one clear penalty not given.
But so had they.
The pen against Shaw at the end was correct.

I'm going to disagree, not saying you're right or wrong. Just from my opinion, I think Ronaldo was more so looking for the contact as much as possible and arched the run slightly.
