"When I die and they lay me to rest I wanna go on the piss with Georgie Best" - Martin Luther King (former South African prime minister)

Is there anyone on here that managed to get pissed with Best (probably 70s and onwards) or know someone who did?

Any personal anecdotes?

When they opened the George Best airport, they made him step into wet concrete so when the concrete hardened the footsteps were still there.
Then they auctioned the big chunk of concrete and a guy I was working for bought it and he once let me step in it.

Always hoped it would be like The Bow-Wow movie where Jordans shoes gave him basketball powers and I would be imbued with some Best magic on the grass.
Unfortunately in my later years Im pretty sure the only Best magic I got from stepping in it were alcohol related.

My old man used to go to the same places as him in the late 60s and would see him around, but not like on the piss with him

Saw him in the Chelsea Potter a few times back in the day, but never had a drink with him. Also bumped into him in a bookies near Green Park station. Chatted to him for a few minutes about United then he took off in the back of a flash Jag.

two of my locals of the years have been george best pubs, the victoria in surbiton (lovely pub) and one in sliema in Malta I forget the name of thats a complete dive bar

that was long after he'd passed but I did meet a people in malta who drank with him there, they all said the same thing, lovely bloke, really quiet, and never had to buy a drink

He was supposed to open a United fan store in Newry, but was admitted to hospital with alcohol blood poisonong.

It really was awful what happened to him and us, as a result.

Bobby Charlton opened the store, instead. Lovely man. Spelt my name wrong on the autograph but I'll let him off!

My granddad nearly ran him over. He would have become the most hated man in Britain if it happened

Was in Annabelle's (club off Albert square) in the 70's Saturday night. I had a girl friend from Sweden who'd taken a job as aupair in Manchester. We're still together btw. She's not the slightest interested in football but knew all about Bestie. He had superstar status all over the world! He was there with his entourage. Looking like a film star. No mobiles then, but my girlfriend always had her Kodak Instamatic in her bag wherever we went. Knowing his attraction to Scandinavian women I asked him if it would be ok if I could take a pic of him next to my (now) missus. Yeah no problem he said but catch me later on before I leave and I'll give you a picture. Caught him as he was leaving and followed the pack outside onto the the street. Approached them camera in hand. Bestie looking a bit tired and distray was given his orders by his main man (Malc Mooney) to move on and we never got our picture.

I was at a club where he was talking ( he was great, funny, honest and took the P out of himself)
Mixed with everyone afterwards, no airs and graces, just having a good laugh with anyone he chatted with
Along with the rest of us, he made great use of the Bar, so many offered to buy him a drink, impossible to drink it all.
I grew up idolising him on the pitch, like most, sad the way things turned out.
I recall him disputing that he had slept with 7 Miss Worlds, stating it was only 3

On Wood Street, right? I heard he had his own private entrance to Annabelle's.

Years ago he came to NZ on a speaking tour. After he spoke he sat and autographed photos of himself for $15. It was the black and white photo of him turning to celebrate his European cup goal. A friend of ours called Joe was a Liverpool fanatic, hates Utd and it was coming up to his 40th birthday so for a laugh we got George to autograph one of these photos for Joes 40th. We explained to George what it was for and how much Joe hated Utd. George autographed the photo and we got it framed for Joe. At Joes 40th he opened up the birthday present of this framed photo, on it George had signed " Dear Joe, go feck yourself! George Best"

Sounds like an artifact that he’s genuinely going to keep for the rest of his life, despite the club affiliations.

No - I can't say that.

But I did meet him once - shook his hand, told him it was a great honour to meet him and so forth - under circumstances where neither I nor he was entirely sober.

(To be fair to him, I was probably more drunk than him - and he was nice * on the whole, but yes: he was obviously not in one of his Antabuse phases.)

* More or less. He wasn't unpleasant, I guess you could say.

Yes it was on Wood st. Don't know if he had his own entrance. I know he left through the stairs leading up to the main entrance cos I followed him. Year was 73. He used to sit in the middle bar. Can't say I ever saw him drunk though. Kiddo was in there as well one night and they were having a chat.

Met big norm and he told a story that he had went to London to do an after dinner thing. He decided to pop in see bestie, bestie decided to join him planned to hit the clubs after. Norm says he looks round there’s women everywhere there’s magnums of champagne everywhere the works, a while later norm looks around bestie is gone, he thinks happy days bestie has pulled.. then the waiter comes down with the bar tab for all the champers that bestie had been calling.

I went once and was turned out for being underage (17). I went off to university in London that year so never went to Annabelle's. Went to Pips a few times talent spotting. Used to see a few faces in there from both United and City.
