Diego Forlan: "If Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all were out of the picture, I would be happy to go on an emergency loan and help out United. Maybe play at Liverpool away, score a goal or two and then make way when the injured come back."

"I had offers to play in England this summer and last. The only team I will play for in England is Manchester United."

2011

"I told him that Manchester United is a great place to experience as a player and that I had a great time there," he added.

"The manager and staff are fantastic and the fans were always very supportive of me, even when I wasn't scoring. I made some good friends there and settled in well. Maybe the weather wasn't always what I wanted, but I had a great experience.

"David really wants to go to United, there's no question about that. He wants the challenge and he wants the experience. United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and not many players get the chance to play there."

He was a likeable guy who scored a few important goals. Glad it worked out for him when he went to Spain.

I would have loved him for a few years after the 2010 World Cup, he was killing it. Although he declined rapidly after the tournament.

Lovely chap and all - but what's the point in making an appreciation thread for a player who didn't deliver here at all?

He was terrible for us, there's no getting away from it. The goals against the scousers saved his legacy though!

My favourite goal of his. I remember being in utter shock after being abismal in pretty much every game he played

In 1991, his sister Alejandra, who is five years older than Diego, was left paralyzed, following a terrible car accident that killed her boyfriend.

After that devastating accident, Forlan – then 12 years old – decided where his life was going, and pledged to earn enough money from his football career that he could take care of her health bills and get her the best doctors – for the rest of her life.

He is a founding member of the Fundación Alejandra Forlán, set up with his paralyzed sister, and he has become an outspoken critic of dangerous driving.

To be successful to help his injured sister, is one reason why he has practiced his free kicks, and other skills throughout his career – well after the other players have left the training field, and it’s not a coincidence that he’s so good at those free-kicks.

After the accident Forlan’s sister Alejandra. was quoted as saying:

“The first thing he told me when I was lying in the hospital was that he would be a famous football player and make money to get me the best doctors in the world.”

Top guy.

He was a great personality and had a very impressive career outside of United, so there's plenty to appreciate if you widen the focus a bit.

Isn't this an appreciation thread for his time at Utd, though?

Certainly I'm not arguing that he had a very good career aside from at Utd.

I've always liked him as a player and even as a person he's ever seemed to be a smart and likeable guy regardless where he played.

Unfortunately it didn't work out at United and I'm more than happy for him that he turned out to have a great career. This interview clearly shows that he has the highest respect for us.

He will now be in action again... Playing for Mumbai City FC in Indian Super League...

He had terrible start, but once he started scoring, almost nothing would stop him it seems. It did feel that way during that time, but he had make way to certain teenage prodigy.

I really liked MUTV's documentary of his stint in Japan. Seems like a top bloke!

Scored an offside goal v Leeds that always sticks in my mind

I liked him. I was young but I remember us signing him, the unknown Uruguayan. I didnt know for how much we bought him or for which club he played or how good he was, but i wanted him to do well. Loved his hair and his presence, but he didnt deliver unfortunately as well as he could. That goal vs Southampton and the Liverpool double are his best moments for us.

Maybe my memory is off but I seem to remember he was starting to turn things around when he got sold. He scored some important goals and I felt he was sold too soon. But I'm happy it worked out for him in Spain.

Scored some important goals in 2002/03 which helped us to win back the PL.

Always liked him, very good player.

That golden mane of his

Outstanding player but it never quite clicked for him at ours. Was glad to see him light it up after he left.

Absolutely loved the guy when he played for us. Unfortunate that it didn't work out better here because the talent was always there.

Cmon Jonesy do your thing:drool:

We should've just loaned him out rather than selling him for peanuts. He could've become a very good player for us.

To bad he never really adapted to the premier league but what a player! Pure class. I held him in the highest regard even after he left.

An excellent player that just didn't quite work for us.
Though I always loved him, even when things didn't really go right. Did score some fantastic goals and I actually was in Uruguay, watching the game, when he scored that goal against Southampton. It was a great experience - both enjoying the goal and the celebrations of the locals.

His performance at the 2010 world cup was maybe the best individual performance I've seen at a world cup. He tamed that dodgy jabulani ball like no one else could. Closest thing to a one man team I'd seen. Folk hero.

Look at all those stupendous goals in one tournament. :wenger:
