Diego León

If this guy went somewhere else you'd have people on here saying Utd should have taken the punt on him for a relatively low fee.

Utd take a punt and for some it was too much for a young player who's probably going to amount to nothing anyway.
Negativity is such a great thing. Some think they sound more intelligent because they are innately more critical. Then, if they are proven wrong, they are glad to be proven wrong, but they will still gladly make the same criticisms at every opportunity for a shallow "told you so" remark.

Seems miles ahead of him physically.
He looks extremely fast - like Valencia fast. It's always a little difficult as you don't know the players he plays against, but still, he looks very, very fast, and will most likely improve even slightly on that. He also looks impossibly strong for a 17-18 year old. Just those attributes makes him interesting, as well as him looking to be a very direct and technically sound player. Valencia wasn't flashy, sometimes leading people to think he didn't have great technique, but he had an immaculate first touch and was world class at progressing the ball both with his strong running and his one-two short passing game. If Leon can emulate that game, we can have a lwb-gem on our hands.

There are people on this page criticising the signing.
I read all the posts on this page, except Bojan, who doesn't think the player might be it, there is no one criticizing the signing. Even he is not criticizing the signing per say, just saying that he is not seeing what others are seeing in the kid but hope he is wrong.

“He looks really raw”

There is NO WAY anyone has seen this guy play. Just no chance. Let’s just see how he gets on.
Not sure what you're talking about. It's the 21st century. He was playing in a fairly high profile youth tournament recently where his all touch comps were available all over the internet. Probably some in this thread if you look back. Plenty of evidence to make an initial assessment off of.

That's the same vibe I get when looking at him - a potential Tony V like player with maximum grit and intensity. Just the sort of player Amorim will like.

Yes, exactly. Don't mind the signing but thought people's expecations of him even being involved with the first team seem a little out of sync with what I've seen.

if the initial assessment of a 17 year old is he’s raw it’s not saying anything at all

Well it obviously does when his rawness is standing out against age group peers as it did in the footage from the South American U20 tournament in January.

Will we loan this guy out or play him in the U21s. I’d like to see him get a game in the carabao cup 2nd round for us

Aye,

He's 17, if he goes in a few years for not being good enough, then so be it. But at least give the kid a chance.

I'll go out on a limb and say I think if we sell him it'll be for more than £7 million

So when it comes to these sigings, £4 million and £7 million arent that different when its a player who looks to have all the right things and is just young and will take a bit of time

When its a player who doesnt have some things, like we signed Pellistri and he didnt have everything you'd want from a winger thats where its more of a gamble and it might end up like it did with like £800k less back than we paid

Like Kone this kid is not going to be a factor next season. Not sure why people keep including him, he needs to settle and develop.

Also. What 17 year old doesn’t look raw? Those criticising him off a few YouTube clips need to give your heads a wobble

He looks better than Dorgu did in his highlights videos, in my opinion. Obviously that's not much to go by but I'm quite impressed. Watching grown men bounce off a 17 year old is reminiscent of a young Rooney for me, in terms of physicality.

He's 18 by the way.

Probably stay with us for at least a year to acclimate to the changes and help him settle. Unless he progresses fast I doubt he'll be loaned out unless it's to some small side in Spain to help him with the move to Europe

I have been watching his games since he signed for us and I think he is ready for the first team. He looks a better player than Dorgu, but it just might be that he is playing in a less competitive league. He certainly has the physic even at this age.

This kid looks good. Can he play in the defensive midfield ? Can he carry the ball and pass ahead ?

Looks a unique player who can sweep through tackles, run down the wings as well as score a goal or two.

I think it is his formative years where he should not be constrained for a particular position.

If you don't mind, I would love to come back and quote you after the end of the 2025-2026 season.

If he's better than Dorgu, surely he'd be good enough to start for the Paraguayan senior team?

Dare I say it, but his movement and almost total left footedness and even the way he strikes the ball don’t half remind me of Roberto Carlos back in the day and before anyone loses their shit, no I'm not suggesting he could be anywhere near that level but it was just the first thing i thought from those few clips.

Im warming to the thought of Leon and Dorgu rotating at the LWB spot even though their true potential cant be seen by many at present. I guess that makes the event more exciting.

It wouldn't be the CAF without some Eeyore'ing

See this a lot on the forum and it's tiring. Had a poster calling for a LWB and when I mentioned this lad was on the way he claimed he wasn't up to scratch. Never mind actually giving the lad a chance first.

It depends — people probably said the same about Ayden Heaven, but he seized his opportunity and now looks to be a solid part of the first-team setup.

I think he will eventually start. Two years younger than Dorgu, so can be brought along and develop slowly.

People are allowed their opinions and have the capacity to take each player on their own merits based on the evidence in front of their eyes. Personally think its more tiresome and delusional to think each youth player bought is going to be the first team starter. I hope he's brilliant for us but based on what I see, I have reservations. That isn't a blanket negative attitude I have for every youth signing we make and am sure its the same for others. i loved the Sekou Kone signing, loved the Chido signing because they looked amazing. Thought Heaven looked great but had heard stuff about his defending so wasn't sure. Diego Leon just looks pretty rough on the ball, that's the long and short of it.

Do you watch him often?
I haven't made any claim either way.
He obviously has something for us to be taking a chance on him.

Yes obviously if the unparalleled recruiters of amazing talent at United have signed him, there's no way he can't be good.

Why not give him a chance before starting a campaign questioning him before he's even kicked a single ball for us.

As long as he has good pace and able to put in a good cross then I think there is a spot for him. Physicality and pace will help him in defending. He is those signing that Brighton or Wolves signs who they goes on to be sold for 30-40 millions.

He is a kid.
Play him in U18s to start with and then U21s if he is up to it and get him English lessons so he is familiar with the lingo.
It's really not that hard to work out is it?

He won't be eligible for U18s.
