Diego León

I think this dude could peak like a Heinze type for us, hopefully much less of an arsehole. He was great at the start. He made the physical stuff look effortless and always commanded his area.

I really can't see him breaking into the team next season with Shaw and Dorgu ahead of him unless shaw goes straight to LCB no questions. Surely this is Shaws last season? In that case I'd be letting León go while we can afford to let him get the maximum minutes somewhere else more difficult than Paraguay
Who is Shaw?

7% of Americans in a survey said that they reckon they can beat a grizzly bear. I think Diego has better chance at making it at United than that.

To be fair a decent number of them probably outweight the bear so they might have a bit more of a chance.

Come the feck on, we are due to unearth a gem finally. Diego Leon seems like a perfect name for that. Come on kid, no pressure.

Good on him for scoring, but… Shit defending from the spuds. They backed off him, gave him space and he ran into it. Overhit his last touch but outmuscled the defender who would have been hauled off had he defended like that in the PL.

I would say it was more the injection of pace and directness of Leon that exposed their frailties. It's not like he had nothing to do there.

Nice one

If he is anything close to resembling a footballer we need to get him in asap as we are getting absolutely nothing from our LWB position. Not far off being a ‘playing with 10 men’ scenario there - it’s the one position we have had no contribution of note for several games now.

Any chance of giving him a try in the coming months, at least as a sub? Just can't trust our current LWB options, and even if you can trust Dalot (best of the bunch), he'll have to move to RWB when AFCON rolls around.

Fortunately I don’t think we’ll be that knee jerk. Leon looks a long way off, as he should given his age.

I don’t see him as being ready for PL football.

It is really hampering us and I am all for giving Leon a chance, but you are seriously underestimating the step up and the role of a WB. Leon to me from all the available footage look like a decent punt as a classic LB in Rafael style, but WB just needs much more than just making runs, crossing, finishing, vision and decision making in the final third is vital. A freak half-lucky run for u21 won't change that he's still very raw for us to improve attacking returns.

As defensive he's now I would even try Luke Shaw there.. with Heaven stepping up to CB. Would be a risk because of potential injury, but Shaw is much more polished than any options we have there atm and he's decent when stepping into midfield from that position.

Shaw doesn’t have anywhere near enough of an engine to play at WB. He’s also been excellent in the last few games stepping in a a an extra midfielder.

I haven’t underestimated the role at all. My post did not even particularly Champion Leon. I’ve said that we get nothing from those currently doing the job, so IF this guy is anywhere near decent give him a chance because the others are definitely rubbish.

The role is important, every role is, and we currently get such little value from it, going either way. Given that our formation is sort of unorthodox as it is, the wingbacks (and third centre back) really need to justify the omission of the more conventional third midfielder. The ineffectiveness of our LWB just makes me rue the fact we don’t have 3 in the middle because to what end are we actually playing an additional defender instead who adds zero?

The point is he's not good enough going forward at all for LWB position. Will be on level of Dorgu at best who is raw but already played games in Italy and for us in the first team. Leon just came from Paraguy and he will not outperfrom Dorgu, Dalot is gash but maybe less error prone than both. We are stuck with mediocrity until Dorgu or Dalot step up, but likely we improve on that position in the summer.

As I said, my point was to highlight the flaws of Dalot and Dorgu - not champion the case of Leon. I didn’t even watch the game yesterday. All I said is if he’s not useless, he should play, because the others are. It was a general comment, and not my up talking Leon’s ability, which I have no idea of as of now.

Could Amass be the solution?

Amass comes back in January & Leon goes out on loan.

Looks to have a good loan from the vids, its better for him to extend imo. Leon on the other hand just came to the club, so its better to integrate him un the club culture before sending him away again. I think we will cope without one. January might be a punt for a midfielder though.

I dont wanna start a pointless argument here, if you havent seen him play, neither I watch anything beyond youtube comps.

It's just a pub shout, he should play, the others are useless. No they are not. They can be underwhelming, but the guy was signed from Paraguayan league as a fullback and will likely need much more time to settle. He's just a punt, and investment from the club, not a ready made player who will outperform the two.

If he had a realistic chance to outperform Dalot who has around 150 senior game for us and Dorgu, with ecxperience from Italy and decent number of games for us as well, he would already be playing. It's not realistic but wonders happen.

It would be great for him to get 6 month loan in League One to get some experience in the team where he would get 90 minutes every week. He would probably get playing time in some of Championship clubs as well, but it can easily end up bad as well.

I think clubs don't tend to loan out teenagers from abroad within the first 12 months, in order for them to settle into the country first.

There's no rush. Hopefully he gets a few cameos when we lose Amad to AFCON.

I see we are talking about LBs at the moment and Smith from Arsenal is getting a few mentions and he is only still a teenager so I wondered how the posters whom regularly watch the youth games would rate the progress of Leon and would he have potential to get Cup games in for the first team next season?

I doubt he would be ready for the first team next season. It might be mainly due to adaptation challenges but he has been on of the least impressive players in our Under-21s this season.

It is either he is not good enough or he is still struggling to acclimatize. If it is the latter then next season would probably still be too early for him.

I would imagine Amass is well ahead of him then.

Leon will likely find himself on the same path Amass took. So Amass seems more likely to be the one put into contention in the first team, especially now we play a leftback instead of a left wingback where you probably want someone with a lot of speed.

At this stage Amass is well ahead. The questions on Amass are mainly projections about how well (or badly) his small size and average speed would translate into senior football.
His body of work so far has been very good unlike Diego.
