I haven't touched a drop for weeks - but now I need a drink.

Feck it all to hell.

He was my childhood hero, more so than anyone.

Very sad news, far too young. A total legend - was my footballing icon, along with Best growing up in Northern Ireland. Just an incredible talent and for me, one of the top 3 players of all time - arguably the best though I would put Messi above him.

He clearly had a lot of demons and was in the grip of cocaine for many years. So sad and it will be a national tragedy for Argentina.

Same date as George Best (15 years ago today)
That's a coincidence as both "addicts" ( booze and drugs ) and the other date I remember is 21st March 1984 - Utd 3 v Barcelona 0 watching him in the flesh and one of our most memorable matches at OT !

RIP the guy was a genius and 60 is far too young..

Feck... this one hurts. :( :( my favourite ever footballer. Always knew he wouldn’t live till old age but still felt he had more to give.

Diego’s greatness will never be forgotten. May he Rest In Peace, a peace he never seemed to fully enjoy during his extraordinary life.

RIP. I remember an article saying that when his funeral procession will take place it will be much bigger than that of Evita Peron. I had also begun to suspect that Pele would outlive him. But that's neither here nor there.

Undoubtedly the greatest character from all the players in and around the 'GOAT' debate. Absolute nutter, bonkers, and the craziest geezer I never knew but kinda wished I could have.

The film on him is crazy. 60 was a solid innings really. RIP

Rest in peace doesn't fit the man, he will find a way to party even harder in the after life. A true legend.

Terrible news, only 60 years of age.
RIP Diego, one of the greats of our game.
1986, the hand of God goal, should not take away his second goal, one of the greatest goals ever, genius.

...and one of the few caracters left that was a link to the romance of football, for me.
Spot on.

I'm close to tears here - didn't think that would happen, but goes to show precisely how powerful that "link to the romance" actually was.

I need to log out and get drunk.

Not really a shock considering his health problems, but he was an icon of the game. RIP

An incredible footballer and icon.

Wherever I go, even old aunties that don't follow football would sit to watch him play in World Cups and knew of him.

RIP Diego. A complete madman this last few years, but one hell of a player on his day. Made the game look easy

I didnt see the best of him, but ill always remember watching him at that 94 world cup (before he got hauled off), pure class.

Him and our Georgie both died on the same day... 2 flawed geniuses

Feck, it's only a couple of weeks since I was waxing lyrical about his brilliance in the Maradona thread. Simply the most gifted player I've ever seen. An actual football genius and pure rock n roll.

RIP.

I can't believe it. I've only seen the news now and didn't know he was ill.

My favourite player of all time and a major reason why I even started to watch football.

Rest in peace Maradona. ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS EVER.

My god. I’m actually in shock right now.

I don’t even know what to say...

RIP to one of the GOATs
