His transfer fee is keeping him in the team currently. Ole made very pointed remarks about it hurting to win football matches in his post-match press conference, so we won't be seeing him on Wednesday after that cowardly challenge on Richarlison.

Looking over my shoulder.
He's just terrible defensively He's slow on the first couple of yards to go with his atrocious positioning. Also his passing today was nothing short of shocking.

Definitely not his best performance, but he's just a kid playing out of position. At least he had the balls to come over and apologise to the fans, same as McTominay and Lindelof, the rest didn't even bother.

Sorry to be exert strong language but this a real slap in the face to all the idiots who have spoken out against signing AWB because "all he can do is defend". Dalot was awful and as I've always said will only complement a wing back role or a wide winger. He's got no defensive acumen whatsoever cannot read the game effectively. Bring in AWB let Dalot be the back up right back or rotational winger.

Ive no problem with Dalot, he's 20, inexperienced, and being played out of position. The only thing we can expect of him really is to show the right attitude, and I think he does.

He's played once at LB for us before today. Other than a handful of games at Porto he has always been a right back. Just because he has played there before doesn't mean that's what he is. It's very difficult for full backs to play on the wrong side unless they're pretty much ambidextrous like Maldini or Zanetti.
He was bought as a player who can cover both FB positions. He is struggling as he is not very good defensively, not because he was played on the wrong side. He was just as poor on the right when he played there. He needs time on the pitch to adjust to the league, whether it is at LB or RB it does not matter right now.

Bad game, he was slaughtered by a very good player constantly and no one in that midfield had the sense to help him properly. I have no problem with a kid learning his trade, he will become a better player because of it.

We have to be patient with him. Nice crosses are all good but he'll have to improve defensively because despite the hype he isn't going to make it as a winger here.

Say what you like about Phil Jones but he’d have enthusiastically eaten that boot to stop the goal.

Dalot has been no worse than most and better than some. A £20m acquisition on a relatively low wage, he will be among the least of our problems and will be about number 12 on the list of those whose sheer ineptitude needs addressing.

He's not ready for first team football yet. Shouldn't have be playing as much as he has during his first season here.

However, i'm not surprised that he's been selected considering the absolute dross we have at full backs except Shaw and to some extent Darmian(he's good at defending, should have always been ahead of Young in the pecking order imo).

IMHO a loan would be an excellent option. He really has a fantastic potential and Porto's plan was to give him the RB spot this season, but you guys offered him a contract before he could renew with a higher release clause.

Yes, he's still raw and with all the instability around our club, things can hardly improve.

A loan wouldn't be a bad idea, but it would leave us very short in numbers.

This is the danger of dropping young players into a shit team. Dalot's confidence looked shot today.

I won't give up on him yet though, he can improve and he has some good qualities.
Yet people want Greenwood, Gomez etc etc etc put in the team as they ‘can’t do any worse’. Doesn’t really work like that in reality.

I just don't see in what way, other than height, he is better than our youth full backs like Laird, O'Connor, Williams, CBJ or Mitchell even. Did our scouts not notice that he couldn't actually defend or pass? He might when he's older become a good player, but he's done nothing to suggest he's any better than our other youth prospects or deserves more chances than them.

If the Meunier links are credible and we do end up signing him, loaning Dalot to a club like Everton for 1-2 seasons would be a smart move, I think. This isn't to insinuate that they are a team that depends on loans — just that we seem to have a decent relationship with them, Marco Silva (a former fullback) could be a good coach for Dalot, and he would benefit from training/playing with Digne (who has developed into one the best fullbacks in the league), Coleman, Baines (if he stays at the club). A timely loan or sale + buy-back move with consistent playing time can be the making of a young defender — like Carvajal at Leverkusen or Hakimi this season at Dortmund, especially in terms of confidence and decision-making improvement.

Folks need to consider that Dalot is super inexperienced at first team level (with 30 first team appearances as starter or substitute at Porto and United combined), and should be nurtured properly because he has been one of the most highly-rated fullbacks in recent years: right from U-17 level, and is actually more developed than Cancelo (needed 2 loans), Pereira (who needed a 2 year loan at Nice), Semedo (was loaned to a Portuguese Second Division team) at a comparable age — and all three are among the Top 10 rightbacks in club football right now. Even Philipp freaking Lahm was loaned to Stuttgart for 2 seasons at age 20, and not every young defender takes to first team football like Alaba or De Ligt.

Dalot is better than all of them you have mentioned. CBJ struggled in the Championship FFS.

I find some of the criticism for Dalot on here bizarre tbh. He has just turned 20 and has came into a new country with a different style of football in an awful defence and has had some decent games. He isn't going to be the finished article yet. Dalot was always a long term prospect.

There's so much criticism for the Hollywood high value high profile signings we make, and most people are in favour of those youngsters bubbling under who could become top class.
But that second category is so hard to judge, and people are so quick to write them off. Dalot was meant to be the hottest defensive prospect in Portugal. We have to be patient. But presumably we'll try and get a right back in their mid 20s this summer still.

At least by playing him he's gaining experience, better than starting the waste of space that is Young

I think I'll highlight Dalots career In a few sentences, he has shown he will not improve defensively in my opinion. You cannot as a professional footballer develop qualities overnight that largely require intuition and instincts to succeed. A player needs the talent and then that's where improvement comes into play, you develop what your capable of and Dalot has shown absolutely no talent whatsoever to the defensive side of his game to be a sound defender.

The Everton game alone displayed that, he couldn't read the game, had no awareness not only of movement around him but spacial awareness which is a key. He's also not even shown to be willing to stick a foot in, I know none of us would like to be kicked in the face (potentially) but we are not professionals, we are not paid houses as a weekly wage, you need to put all on the line for 90 mins.

Going forward however it's a completely different story, the revelation that Ole should give him is to move him permanently to a right winger. It suits his strengths, he has skill in possession, can run with the ball and has great execution on a cross a whipped ball is always dangerous for the opposition even if it's inaccurate because the trajectory of the ball causes defences problems, you can atleast get a corner or a mistake.

Dalot should in no way shape or form be considered a right back for the future at this club. Only a winger or a wingback where a centre half can occupy a similar position to cover and double up.

That's the thing, alot of people on here say they prefer signing young players with huge potential, yet alot have turned on Dalot already after less than 1 season at 19-20 years old. If we get Sancho and he doesn't hit the ground running I dread to think what some of the reactions will be.

In regards to Dalot, I think us being linked to Meunier makes perfect sense. He has experience and we will need that in the squad once we get rid of the deadwood and bring more youngsters in. Dalot will then be squad cover learning from him, as it should be.

I don't want him either. We already have Shaw who is not so great in an attacking sense and I don't see why we should get the equivalent at rb in AWB. It sucks that Dalot isn't ready to take over either.

CBJ performed better in his few games for us than Dalot has, however terrible his loans after have been.

Thats very harsh, he's just turned 20 and barely been given a game at right back. He clearly needs to work on his game but you're well wide of the mark if you think he can't improve.

Spot on.
Imagine the pressure on Sancho if he comes in for 80-100m, and doesn't start like Rooney did?

United remain by far the most analysed team in the country, which is a big factor why players wilt here.

Wait, some are on his case for pulling out of that Richarlison goal? He tried to block it, he was just nowhere near it. More to do with his poor anticipation rather than pulling out. He was not expecting Richarlison to do an overhead kick so was not in position to stop it.

He’s obviously not ready to start games at RB, that’s for damn sure. The way Ole has been using him so far is actually not a bad idea. Our options at RW are awful and it gives Dalot a change to get experience without costing us defensively (currently weakest element in his game) Of course, signing a fullback who isn’t very good at defending doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Much like all our other transfer business of the last few years. At least he is yong and lernin.

He’s a long way off the required level, we should be adding a RB and LB to the squad as only Shaw is good enough. With rotation there will be plenty of games still for Dalot and hopefully he will develop into a good player.

Full backs are so vital that you need four good ones, likes of Young and Darmian aren’t even suitable backups.

It’sfrustrating that we have Valencia, Young, Darmian and Rojo all in our first team squad as fullbacks - with none of them fit purpose - and yet no specialist fullbacks from the youth/reserves are getting a look in ahead of them.

Yeah it’s weird it’s like the right wing position where it seems like an after thought and happy to just have people do a job rather than people who actually play in that position.

He was poor but tactics didn't help. He should definitely not play LB again. Looks so awkward on the left. I also think Young looks far better on the left than on the right. I believe a small change like switching Young and Dalot would make both players and hence the team look slightly better.

Have sympathy for the lad. 19 years old in a new league, played out of position on Sunday. Had more starts this season than I anticipated. Has looked better on the right side of midfield slot which is where we struggle actually, so dont know why we dont just keep him there tbh.

Needs time and patience. Dalot is the least of our worries at the moment.
