Do United fans underrate their players?

I may be the devil, but i'm not a monster
I keep seeing threads about how good Chelsea's team will be next year, how far United have to go to even match them etc let alone catch City and Liverpool...

I feel like there is a constant underrating of United players, especially the likes of Rashford and Martial in regards to their status in world football. It is likely that both players are about to hit 20 goal seasons for the first time and this is for the vast majority of this season, playing with Lingard, Perrira and Mata in behind them.

Which begs to question, both are up there with some of the best young forwards in Europe and should be just about to hit their stride in terms of turning into world class forwards. Pogba is one of the best players in the game and Bruno may just be one of the bargains of the century.... yet United fans are more concerned about players who are striding around in an attacking league where numbers are much easier to come by.

Its been obvious that these players would take time to develop because we bought them so young, but Martial on his day, is arguably one of the most talented forwards in the world. If you added consistency to his game, he worked on his predatorial instincts, I would say he's creeping up on Mbappe in terms of talent, but is trickier in close dribbling and a better finisher. There is very few players I have ever seen, make some of the thing Martial does look so effortless.

As for Rashford, he's peak Ronaldo lite, but still needs to add consistency to his game. His ability to draw the ball down from over the top on forward runs is outstanding and having Pogba behind him for a full season would see him move even further forward in terms of effectiveness.

Isn’t this thread virtually the same as the third best squad in the league thread?
It is just going to have the same points put forward and I think that has just about been exhausted .

No. More often than not it's quite the opposite. Players that we think are world class barely register for neutral fans

Agreed.
I think MUFC fans over-rate their own players and can't be objective when assessing them.
I just wrote a comment in the Lingard performance thread. There was a poster in there saying that he needs to be given more chances, even though he has scored 2 goals in 18 months.

Mata, Lingard, Perreira - all need to be off loaded as they are not good enough to play in the EPL.

Underrate any player that has been in the first team for 2+ years.

Overrate any youth player who hasn't broken through.

Overrate any new signing

We've had 2 years of the same negative threads being posted half a dozen times a day. It's nice to see some with a positive spin.

OP is right though. We have the beginnings of a very talented team. We haven't looked this healthy in years. And even now, if we did a combined XI between Chelsea and United, I'd say it would comfortably be in our favour.

Underrate? Not at all. Infact I think our fans have been quite level headed in rating our players. Most realise we need to improve drastically, but highlight certain players we already have as ones we can build a team around.

The only player that gets underrated on here is Martial. He’s better than Rashford.

United fans aren't a single entity and moaners will tend to head online more than people who are pretty happy about things.

Beat me to it.

The caf overall is depressingly negative and massively underrates the team as a whole. Unless we win every game 3-0 and everyone has a stormer, it’s just moan moan moan. Reading the caf you’d think we hadn’t won since November, not 13 games undefeated.

The club, players included, has been poor by United standards for the past seven years. So no, I don't think we underrate them at all.

You will get that at every club. A few posters saying Lingard needs more chances is no difference to Liverpool fans asking for Shaq to stay.

No one rates Mata, Lingard, Perreira, they are all just there because there is no one else.

Always worth getting the views from opposing fans when it comes to honest evaluations of players. I can't think of many players in our squad that opposition fans would argue are better than how we would rank them ourselves.

They also tend to be people with a bit more time on their hands than most, but that doesn't make their opinion any more right or wrong.

We're way too guilty of overrating our youth team players, especially. Every kid is apparently destined for greatness, you see it every time future starting 11s are posted and its so funny.

We overrate some and underrate others. I think we're more guilty of underrating the team as a whole for fear of not being burned again, some people seem to think we're miles off being able to challenge but I don't think so, just 1 or 2 quality first team signings. What we need is better depth so we can prevent another season like this one where we've lost so many of our strongest players to injury.

It's funny when they finally play in the first team either here or somewhere else, and then reality hits. We've got fans who agree that young unproven players should get guaranteed playing time in their contracts, ffs.

We’re still a long way off Liverpool. The whole league is and, depending on the city ban case, I think they could win the league comfortably again next season.

If city are banned from Europe then I think 2nd is up for grabs as surely they’ll lose a few, and they’re an ageing squad relatively. City, Chelsea, us, Wolves, Spurs if they keep hold of their better players, Leicester could all be in the mix for 2nd.

For us, I think full strength we can beat anybody, but one or two injuries and we’re really lacking in depth.

Where does that fit in over/underrating players?

Going by the responses in any of Ole related threads, there are some people who don't even entertain the possibility that if we do not qualify for the CL, another manager could come in and do a better job.

Not sure about that.

Not really. My view is this: We watch the games week in week out, we know all the news regarding our players, so ultimately as fans we have more evidence from which to base our opinions rather than rival fans. Lots of United fans have lots of different opinions, which makes people think we overrate or underrate players when in reality, it is just a mix of opinion.

They have given a reasoning. If Ole plays good football and we dont get top 4. Alot have said no CL and sack.

It is also clear that the players are rubbish, we have seen it from LVG to Jose where alot of the players have not been good enough for this club.

You can have pep and Klopp but even they wont get much out of Lingard, Mata, Perreira.

Depends on how the game went. People are very kneejerky. Look at peoples opinions on Martial post Tottenham and then post Sheffield.

Does either side even play a diamond? We play a 4-2-3-1. The only way a diamond benefits either team is so you can sneak Kovacic and Giroud in there.

I think football fans in general are very short-sighted, including myself and most of the United fans. When we win, we are p the third best team in the league, when we lose we're shit and Ole is nothing more than a P.E teacher.

I personally think we are on the right path but not a world-class team yet. I think Chelsea are better than us, and we are miles away from City and Liverpool. But we will get there eventually.

Do we underrate players? No, but at times we tend to overate them.

To compete with the likes of City and Liverpool we need players who can win you the game on their own, Pogba and Bruno fall into that category.

Rashford and Martial can and have done occasionally, but not always, and they need others to set them up. I tend to think when Martial is on form he is more deadly, more often with his finishing (or maybe because of the way he took his hat-trick?) than Rashford (again missing easy chances is more Marcus forte than Tony's)

DeGea has until fairly recently won us games and maximum points, on his own, but recently slip ups have lost us points too.

Matic back to his old form is a must as DM, he saved us from a real mauling in the second half of the League Cup tie at OT against City, but he wont last much more than another season and we haven't really got an out and out DM who can replace him. Whilst they have other midfield qualities I think we tend to overate both McTominay and Fred in this particular role of DM, the less said about Pereira the better.

Maguire and AWB look like players we can rely on, although both have some vulnerability going forward. Shaw can look awesome going forward, but desperate defending when he loses his concentration, which seems to be every twenty minutes or so. Except perhaps moving forward with the ball, don't see much difference between Lindelof and Smalling

So far Ighalo hasn't let us down, and when he is in position between the posts he looks capable of finding the net.

Williams and Greenwood are encouraging in their breakthrough season, Mata is past his self by date and Jessie, well what can you say?

James is fast but at times its a 'headless chicken' type fastness, still he's young he can learn.

Martial isn't exactly prolific (despite scoring a recent hattrick) and whilst Giroud scores less, he offers so much more balance in his hold up play, clever passing and aerial attributes.

Kovacic has been our best player this season so he has to get in there somewhere, and not at the expense of Pogba or Kante.

Both Kepa and DDG are shite. I'd rather have Willy in goal than either of them.

Depends player to player. We definitely overrate new signings and academy graduates, whereas players like Shaw, Martial and DDG and Lindelof to a degree are underrated

United fans actively hate their players. They love the managers, and the players are just the nasty pieces of shit who make it difficult for the great managers.

We are 37 points off first place, we are currently 6th in the league today. Martial got the first hat trick in the league since Rvp a few days ago. Let's keep to reality everyone, we have some very talented young players in our first 11. We aren't there though and not a consistent team. We are going in the right direction and should get better, with a great transfer window we'll see. We could still finish with our lowest points total in a premier league. I'm all for optimism in the future but fans are clearly frustrated because we are still in transition.

What I do know is many fans on here are particularly negative and fickle. In a lot of cases, folks are just plain unfair to certain players for whatever reason.

Some folks have even defended unfounded post match views as excusable when called on it because they were in the moment.

I'm sorry, but if you're going to post a comment about a living human being's quality of work, have enough respect for your audience, and more importantly, your subject (who you're supposed to be a supporter of) to think it through and be balanced in your judgement. If you can't, shut your gob (or fingers in this case ;) )

I would argue the opposite. If anything we overrate our players, especially our young homegrown players”

“We don’t need a LB we have Williams”

“We don’t need a CB we have Tuanzebe”

“We don’t need a DM we have McTominay”

Short answer: Yes and No. Players that “fight for the badge” and shit are normally overrated by our own fans for obvious reasons. While players that might slag off in one game or are targeted by media (ie Pogba) tend to be vilified and underrated by our own fans. It’s interesting when you compare us to a club like Liverpool who are always convinced their XI is world class every year even in their worst years.
