Do we need to sign a striker?

I find the Wellbeck link confusing. As surely if we wanted him, we could have signed him in a free before he penned a new deal with Brighton. My guess is Brighton would want £15-20mil for him.

Igor Thiago is going to be a premium price. Brentford won't want to sell and he's started for brasil in the WC. £60-70mil for him, my guess.

Toney I think would be £40mil, but his wages are insane in Saudi. Would he want to take a paycut to return?

You'd think there would be cheaper experienced options from mid tier clubs in spain-france-germany?
Yet those who may not be able to handle the intensity of the PL, when you want an experienced striker to help your younger striker in the Prem, you’re gonna want one who has experience in the Prem.

Don't disagree with that. Problem is the prices and how much we have to spend. Allegedly we can't afford to buy Lewis Hall from Newcastle this summer. Where are we going to find the money for a striker?

I don't think we need to sign a striker. This is our attack:

Left: Cunha, Dorgu
Right: Mbeumo, Diallo
Striker: Sesko, Zirkzee and Cunha and Mbeumo both played there

We need to spend our money on midfield more than anything else.

I don't think here is an chance personally of Utd bringing in a striker like alverez when it's been communicated and understood that Sesko is out lead striker. He's the project and we have invested heavily in him.

Also our most pressing need is 2/3 CMs. I don't see Utd spending more than £30/40mil on a backup / alternative striker to Sesko.

I don’t think it’s ever been communicated that Šeško is untouchable or that United won’t sign another top striker because he’s the long-term No. 9. That’s more of an assumption than an established club position.

I really like Šeško and think he has a very high ceiling. My point isn’t that he isn’t good enough to play for United—it’s that I don’t think he’s at the stage of his career where we should rely on him as our undisputed first-choice striker across a full Premier League and Champions League campaign.

If United’s ambition is to compete with Europe’s elite, I don’t think that’s setting the bar high enough. Most top clubs have either an established world-class striker or two players capable of leading the line.

With Champions League football back, we’re going to play a lot more matches. I think we need genuine competition up front rather than assuming Šeško will be ready to carry the attack from day one.

Zirkzee will be sold

Both of Cunha and Mbeumo can play up top especially as Cunha is showing in the World Cup and if we can’t shift Rashford then so can he so we don’t need a striker, as much as I’d like Welbeck back I just don’t see Ineos spending money on someone of Welbeck’s age so a winger who can play both sides like Diomamde or Summerville makes much more sense.

Been banging that drum. Bring him home. For once Brighton can do a fair deal after the service he’s given them.
No, I disagree, and I love me some Welbz. Problem with a player his age is that you’d be buying him on what he’s done in the last couple of seasons, not what you think he’ll do in the next couple of seasons.

Players can drop off a cliff in their mid-30s; just look at Salah’s last two seasons. At that age, yesterday isn’t a brilliant predictor of tomorrow.

If he was on a free, and it was 1+1 deal, then fine. But paying anything above a couple of million for a player that age is incredibly risky. If we dropped £10-15m on him, we’d have to give him at least a 2+1 deal and it could all end up horrible and expensive.

That's what I meant, a fair price is Brighton allowing him to leave for little due to his age, years of service, and likely desire to return to United if given the choice. And certainly a 1+1 deal or, at the most a 2 year deal. If he's got ambitions to stay in the game he'd already return to a club that supports players with opportunities in that regard.

Of course I'm not suggesting dropping 10-15m on a player turning 36 this year.

Apologies if I’m charging you with the crimes of others, but it’s an idea I’ve heard mooted several times. To me, the idea of him rejoining went out of the window the moment his contract was extended for a year.

We really need a striker.

Sesko has shown signs of injury problems and with 2, maybe 3 games in a week coming this season, we need other options.

Cunha and Mbeumo are great alternatives, but this then limits our attacking options on the wings. We can't compete domestically and in Europe without another goalscorer. Before anyone says it, Zirkzee is not the answer and should be moved on.

When did that happen (the contract I mean)?

We dont really need. Cunha is great there for Brasil, I think in this moment he is better than Sesko and Mbuemo for that spot. Sell Rashy and Zirkze and buy Barcola and I would be more than satisfied with our attack.

Yeah Vivell's opportunity to unearth someone as like you say Toney isn't gonna take a huge wagecut

Who is paying a fee for Rashford and Zirkzee, also didn't get impression that PSG want to sell Barcola. So maybe the question should be

Cheap backup Striker and Summerville

OR

No backup striker but rival scousers for Diomande

I think we need to sign a forward of some form. Doesn’t have to necessarily be a striker. It would be nice to have a forward who can play anywhere across the forward line who has sufficient positional versatility.

I'm all about Chupete lately.

His stats are off the charts.

He's 21.

Has a Prem build.

He has a paltry 7m quid release clause.

He passes the eye test.

Internally I'd rather give Dorgu and Cunha a run out at LW next season than spunking wads on a LW like Barcola when we have 1,000 other holes to fill first. Can revisit next summer.

I also think next season is when Chido needs to be getting a workout in the league. If he could get over 700 minutes that'd be nice. If we can't do that he needs a loan sorted.

I don't see Cunha or Mbeumo as 9s at all. I'd rather keep them on the wings (since Bruno is the defacto 10).

I don’t believe this at all. We’re getting sweaty bums over the cost of midfielders. So why would we suddenly have 100m+ for Alvarez? Unless we’ve valued him at 60m and not a penny more.
Yeah it comes across as total rubbish. Atletico don't want to sell. Madrid offered £130mil and they said no.

Alvarez wants Barcelona, he's been very public about that. Atletico said pay the €500mil release clause fee.

Saw the source then quickly brushed over

Yeah I would rather them in wide forward positions

Lewandowski hasn't signed for new club yet, just saying

Think Oyarzabal would be a decent look as well tbf
I think he would be a very good choice, can play multiple attacking positions. Issue is what sociedad would want from him in terms of price.

Hes the sort of mid table back up striker to Sesko I think would be a sensible buy, at the right price.

He will go to MLS probably join Messi in Miami
I don't think he'll be going there if Casemiro is, there are restrictions in MLS with salary caps and international player quotas amongst others

Ramos leaving PSG for AC Milan

So PSG will be in the market for a striker as well...

Can't see Toney taking a massive pay cut to join us.

I’m not against signing an experienced striker if the intention is to strengthen the squad depth. My concern is that neither Welbeck nor Toney feels like the kind of signing that raises the ceiling of the team. They improve the squad, but I’m not convinced they improve our best XI. If our ambition is to compete for the biggest trophies again, I’d rather see us target a striker who can genuinely challenge to become first choice rather than simply provide cover for Šeško.

I always wonder if he is better for country than club

They're my second team so I feel like I have a little room to speak.

He's definitely not a mid table player. He'd be wanting to go to a top 5 side in Europe. Would he be willing to be a squad player? I doubt it. We'll see I guess. Apparently Barca have him as an alternative to Alvarez.

I think with us he'd be starting over Sesko.

I think he'd be about 35-40m euros. They already rejected 25 off Fener.

That's actually a decent price
