Do we need to sign a striker?

I'd take Mateta for 25m.

I do like Chupete too. He has an 7m release IIRC (unless his new deal he signed last the end of the season upped it, IDK) and is a real #9. He blew the doors off in Segunda Liga and I think there's a proper player in there. Like I think before the season is out he'll be at a top club. If not this summer.

For that price it's like even if he blows so what.
Interesting shout. Never seen him play before but sounds like there are some parallels to the deal Bournemouth did to sign Kroupi Jr last summer

The fact that he already had a transfer to Milan fall through because he failed the medical is as obvious a red flag as you can get.

And as far as I'm aware he didn't subsequently have the surgery he was reported to be considering to try and correct the issue? As far as I'm aware they kept trying to manage it without surgery and keep him playing, as they have been for a while.
Yeah I'm convinced that's why we haven't made move. I agree we have players capable of playing down middle however still hope we sell Zirkzee and sign replacement

I reckon we do but we go down the road of an unknown.

We’re not signing another striker now. If Rashford stays, he can play there, as can Cunha and Mbuemo. Zirkzee might stay too so I’d be surprised if we got someone else in before either of Rashford or Zirkzee leave.

Our back up 9 should probably be a 9, not a winger or inside forward playing out of position.

Matetas knee is fecked, otherwise he would be perfect as a 2nd striker.
In any case, we need a striker.
Cunha, Sesko etc. still seem to be a level where they can only provide one digit goal figures.

Both of those players got double digit goals last season.

I’m not saying what should happen, rather what will happen. We have too many positions to fill for us to go spend 40ish million on a backup to Sesko when we already have players capable of doing that job.

Yeah, agree there. Hard to see it happening although this window has been full of surprises.

Didn’t Milan pull out of signing Mateta in the last couple of weeks because of his knee ? After we pulled out of signing Ederson for the exact same thing I wouldn’t believe that report at all mate
Actually did not know that tbh. You are right.

This would be pretty smart business.
Thought the same but given the knee problem we'll probably pass.

Jeez, we are clearly lacking suitors which isn't surprising
I also hate this "popular in the dressing room" shite. We all know people who are popular in the workplace who at the same time are a detriment to performance. In fact - it's often the popular ones who seem to be best about convincing people they should keep their place. He may legit may be a good lad even, but this is still a global institution that grossly underperformed on the pitch for years.

Yeah has a touch of the Henderson with England being in the squad for this World Cup doesn't it

I don't think there's a position in football that United fans romanticize more than the "experienced back up striker".

Majority of the ones available will be pretty shit and not contribute a bunch of goals. Situations like Cavani essentially never happen these days. If we really wanted another striker we'd be better off spanking a bunch of cash on Kroupi and just rotating him and Sesko consistently. Would be a better use of funds than bringing some old head that's past it and not valuable enough to start anywhere. That "experience" doesn't bring us anything.

When your 22 year old £60-70m signing last summer is turning out to be either injury prone or hopefully just plain unlucky so far, it's actually not a bad idea to bring in somebody who's proven to hit the back of the net at this level. We don't have to bring in somebody "past it", just basically a Teilemans-like signing, 29 odd year old who doesn't break the bank, up front. Surely there's somebody of that sort of profile out there. However I'll leave that to the scouting department.

I agree in recent times it doesn't - but I also understand why people think it still does when we were spoiled in not too long ago history with the likes of an Ole, Makaay, Inzaghi, Crespo, Hasselbaink, Giroud, Bierhoff, and probably many more who played as super subs.

I am afraid next season under Carrick in his permanent role and with all the pressure connected to this, it won´t be as easy. His spell was basically a free trial and error under Amorim. Sesko had a a few good weeks in which he managed to get back to back to back goals from the bench, that saved his overall statistics. Can´t be too bad to add another striker for sure. People also forget Carrick had to do zero ressource management last season. He will play 4 competitors now with players coming from a WC summer.

How has Rashford fared over the last couple of years when played on top? Looked decent at Villa against big opponents as he usually does on the counter, but haven't watched him at Barcelona

Well given that you couldn’t even get what’s already happened right, I’ll take your future predictions with a grain of salt.

An alternative view would be that with Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko and Dorgu all bedded in more, plus with some more mobile CMs behind them who are known for their progressive passing, our attack could function even better next season.

Sure, there will be pressure and the schedule will be much tougher. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.

If we sell Zirkzee and keep Rashford, we will have:

Sesko, Rashford, Mbeumo, Amad, Cunha, and Dorgu. That's 6 players for 6 positions. I would say the 3rd midfield and full backs especially left back are still more priority than striker.

If my memory serves me right they agreed a fee and literally that weekend he picked up a knee injury. It wasn't an underlying thing that he was playing through or anything that the medical then picked up. Milan pulled out as he was basically out for the season as he required surgery, which he returned from for Palace scoring in the Conf final.

For £25m I'd be very okay with us going for him as I think he gives something similar to Sesko in a big target man but someone who is more a bruiser rather than Sesko who can connect and play a bit more. I will always prefer us to take a gamble on a Javier Hernandez type signing for this back-up type of role, but if we're going "Prem proven" he is the obvious, gettable option after Welbeck and Jimenez went off the table.

Do we need to sign a striker? 100%

Will we sign a striker? Don't think so. Even with Zirkzee leaving, I think we'll make do with Mbeumo/Cunha playing there.

I know theres not as many in that striker mould these days.. But Id love us to dip into that South American market again, see if we can find the next Chicarito'esq player that can come into games and have some serious super sub impact..

The problem with our subs / second string of players these days is they have little to no effect on the game and the quality level severely drops when they come on. Apart from the likes of Amad, Our forward subs are not great at all

Welbeck makes most sense in my opinion. Is very experienced, still can score, knows the club and can coach Sesko and Obi.

Wissa is out of favor at Newcastle but won’t come cheap. Wood is last season of his contract and might be a good shout too.
That’s shows the state of the market. Those are not good options. I would not be giving Newcastle money for Wissa. He’s failed at Newcastle which points to him not being able to adapt.

Wood would be a handful for defenders, but surely a plan B type player (throw on with 20 mins to go?, rather than someone you would be happy to start 20+ games a season?

Yesterday Deal Sheet on The Athetic said we are in for another striker but dependent on zirkzee or Rashford leaving. Also said we are still looking at LB and a 3rd central midfielder.

As with all my predictions, I hope I am wrong. Unfortunately this was not the case a lot. Let´s hope we get the season we all crave and deserve.

Thats understandable in terms of numbers. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a forward is a deadline day move. Could see it being a slightly random one; a player that’s not been mentioned but suddenly finds himself as a spare part as his club.

Sounds about right. If one of them goes then I think we will, definitely if both do.

Unfortunately I would say it feels like they’ll stay at the moment. Plenty of time for that to change though.

Which position needs to be filled more urgently? Striker, or CB? Two of our best CBs are extremely injury prone and the backups are not exactly great. We have more options up front to fill in for Sesko (though not good options admittedly) than the defence.

If we bring in a LW, Cunha can be used as a CF. Mbuemo was unothodox but would be a decent third choice at CF in the event of the inevitable injury crisis.

Definitely 70%...not 65 or 73%? fecking idiots.

I'd like to see Zirkzee moved on but maybe we could find a decent loan deal for an experienced striker we could rotate with Sesko?

You could expand this to be 4 areas really.

CB starter combo isn't clear or reliable
No proper striker backup
No 3rd mid signing for depth or even a big starter
No proper left back cover.

It truly never ends
