Obviously, my point was that when he was fit all of the time with Atletico he was very good. I'm not saying we should buy him now.A player who can't stay fit is useless.

I think we were linked with the entire Dutch team when LvG arrived.I'm sure this was just us thinking we could get him for £10-15 million like Dan James and Newcastle said they wanted £50 million.
On this topic, Ron Vlaar and Bruno Martins-Indi when LVG joined (although I'm not sure we fared much better with Rojo).
Yeah, early LvG days again. Think Van Gaal was intent on a left footed central defender but Wenger wouldnt allow it if I recall.Weren’t we heavily linked to thomas vermahlen at one point.
that guy makes Phil Jones injury record look decent.
What were Newcastle thinking about not selling him? If we'd offered 20m they should have torn our arm offI'm sure this was just us thinking we could get him for £10-15 million like Dan James and Newcastle said they wanted £50 million.
I remember us being linked with Cillessen, Vlaar, Martins-Indi, and Sneijder (again), and we ended up signing Blind and Depay, as well as already having van Persie.I think we were linked with the entire Dutch team when LvG arrived.
Jose Fonte was another one.
He was 21 years old and was breaking through into their first team. They obviously thought he had a far higher ceiling than he does. I imagine there was also an element of protecting squad depth in the middle of the pitch as they'd spent basically all of their transfer budget on Joelinton and Saint-Maximin that summer. What were Newcastle thinking about not selling him? If we'd offered 20m they should have torn our arm off
yeah that’s it, now I fully remember. It was frustrating how adamant LVG was having a left foot centreback.Yeah, early LvG days again. Think Van Gaal was intent on a left footed central defender but Wenger wouldnt allow it if I recall.
Yeah it was so weird how insistent he was on it. Its how we ended up with Rojo in the end I thinkyeah that’s it, now I fully remember. It was frustrating how adamant LVG was having a left foot centreback.
We had to endure Tyler Blackett and Rojo as a result!yeah that’s it, now I fully remember. It was frustrating how adamant LVG was having a left foot centreback.
We had to endure Tyler Blackett and Rojo as a result!
You forgot Cameron Borthwick-Jackson!We had to endure Tyler Blackett and Rojo as a result!
I had literally forgotten that Donald Love, James and CBJ existed. Didn't James play a worldie against Real in pre-season under LvG?You forgot Cameron Borthwick-Jackson!
And the right-back carousel that gave us Paddy McNair, Reece James (not that one), Guillermo Varela and Donald Love!
He went to Inter and was instrumental in them winning the treble?Sniejder
Clearly was on the decline by the performances in the seasons following our interest in him and trying to meet the wage package he was on at Inter would have been disastrous.
I was referring to when we were trying to sign him, or at least papers and forums said we were trying to sign him, from Inter in 2010 might of been 2011? one of those summersHe went to Inter and was instrumental in them winning the treble?
Well we have hardly fared better since with our midfield aquisitions in all honesty. But would agree with a lot of them M'Vila and Strootman especially got raved about and did very little, obviously injuries played a part.Pretty much any midfielder we were linked to in that period a few years ago where fans were just desperate for us to sign basically anyone for the position
Yohan Cabaye
Kevin Strootman
Yann M'Vila
Geoffery Kondogbia
Grzegorz Krychowiak
Steven Nzonzi
Ronaldinho would have been utterly spectacular in the PL. In terms of pure flair the best to watch.Don't get me wrong, I know what you are conveying...but Ronaldinho was mint 03-06.
Fergie said in his books that had he got shearer utd would have won 2-3 more european cups. He was that good a striker at the time.Alan Shearer was f#@&*n dearer ... so we got Ole the treble and hopefully the start of more trophies soon.
DefourWho was the belgium midfielder fergie was after. He broke his leg and fergie sent him a get well soon card, with a note that he'd be watching his recovery closely or something. The actual card picture was in the papers.
Sure that CM went on to do nothing of note really.
ngl, i forgot sturridge existed, wow what a declineTweet

ronaldinho wasnt a dodged bullet though, still one of the most brilliant footballers ive seen, ever.Ronaldinho.
We went on to sign Cristiano later...
Thought we could have went in for Rafael for a back up since Trippier was too expensive, although I’ve not really followed him much since he left.Tweet

Recently? Wissam Ben Yedder from Sevilla? Some complete random nobody who plays in a Spanish middle table side. I can't remember his name but for some reason 1 newspaper article linked him to us and people were going mad for him. Nobody had even heard of the guy.
