Does Rooney deserve a statue?

I was discussing the Rooney achievement with my friends. Whilst we agree he's finished as a starter for Man Utd, the career he's had is nothing short of incredible and it was suggested he deserves a statue.

The United Trinity won their place for unique reasons other than their longevity: leading United to be the first English club to win a European trophy (IIRC) and all being Ballon D'or winners. But does Rooney earn the right of having some form of memorabilia dedicated to him at our stadium?

He's our all time record goalscorer, winning every meaningful club trophy there is and probably won't be beaten. If not at retirement I'm quite sure it would be a serious consideration in the future as nostalgia builds up around him as a historic player.

Yeh, he probably does but unlike previous players who deserved them he's not as well liked. But then again he's a modern footballer, maybe he's actually done incredibly well to achieve what he has in this day and age.

Yes but give it 20 years so we can forget about what a turd he is and remember the footballer.

Retire his number and rename OT after him as well.

Nope.

He's a great record holder, but he's not a man of the people or a fan favorite. I haven't seen him stop for the fans outside OT once.

Personally I want him to leave asap and have that be the very last we hear of him

Slightly different conversation now that he's broken the record, which is what most of this discussion will be based on.
Okay, I can see this discussion heading exactly the same way as the one three months ago (when everyone pretty much knew that he'd get the record), but fair enough.

If Rooney get's a statue then we need to set aside land for a museum of statues for people who are ahead of him. Great servant for the club though.

No, he's been a great servant but i wont forget the transfer requests and the fact SAF wanted rid in his last season. Shame we didn't get £40m from Chelsea when it was on offer tbh.

He's achieved an incredible feat though not only United's top scorer but England' too, along with numerous PL titles and a Champions League win nobody can take away what he's achieved.

I'm sure I've already seen one, every week in the oppositions penalty box!

Giggs, Scholes, Cantona, Keane, at least, should get one before him.

Rooney had his chance to lead our team to success and if not for the almighty Barca or/and his Bayern injury, he would've been on par if not higher than those 4. But it didn't happen, so no. Most of his titles were won with him being a supportive player to another star - Ronaldo or even RvP. Still amazing though

If that were true (it isn't) why would you hold Ferguson wanting to sell him against Rooney?

If SAF continued for 1 more year Rooney was gone that summer. SAF went out of his way in his final interview to throw Rooney under the bus. I see SAF as a club legend obviously, the fact this twat is on over 200k a week, just won a league title yet still wanted out really pissed me off with the timing of SAF retirement. Rooney's reputation with United fans is tarnished and its all his own doing so feck him.

I would say he deserves it as much as Giggs if he didn't have that transfer saga in between.

On a side note - his achievement is incredible but I didn't know Ian Rush had 346 goals for Liverpool . That's 100 or so more than Wayne!

Apparently he asked to leave in March (around the Real game) before it was public knowledge Ferguson was retiring, it was also before United had won the league and it was actually Ferguson who made it public. So by all means be angry at him for wanting to leave, but you can't be angry at him for the timing of it being made public.

Rooney would not have been sold in 2013 had Ferguson stayed on he said that himself.

Well i doubt he would come out and say he'd sell the current United captain if he stayed on, that would do nobody any good and just cause unrest. He forgave the first request and gave him a bumper contract to stay on, a second transfer request and SAF would have fecked him straight off, no chance he's staying on after that under SAF in my opinion. I guess we will never really know so pointless debating either way.

Record holders don't get statues, they have the record to their name.

And you don't build statues for record holders because you hope to break it again, the sooner the better.

Listen mate it's a myth created by newspaper headlines that Ferguson would have sold him. He said at the time while he was still in the job:

"He'll be here next year. You can have my word on that."

And then when he made it public that he had asked to leave.

"We are not going to let him go."

In my opinion those are not the quotes of a man looking to sell a player.

Practically impossible. Can't find any surface material that would be able to substantiate the shinyness of his forehead.

What Ferguson says to the press and the truth are two different things.

http://www.espnfc.com/story/263122/ferguson-beckham-not-for-sale

However, Ferguson told The Sun Beckham will not be sold.

'It is totally out of the question,' he said. 'There is no way we would sell him - or any of our best players.'
Guess what happened that summer..

Yeah, but you need to read between the lines, invisible ink, study his body language, and look for facial ticks.

After that, it's pretty obvious he would go for sale.

May have broken the record but there are definitely more deserving players.

IMO no. It's a great record and he deserves a lot of credit for that. But there's definitely a few I'd put ahead if him for a statue. Would be disappointed to see this happen.
