He’s had 2 good seasons imo. If he’s signed, he’ll be back up at best and tbh I’d rather him than Hojlund. We’ll get a proper first XI striker. It’s been reported this morning by a tier 1 Turkish journalist that we asked Osimhen to reduce his wage demands but he’s rejected it. That shows if we want DLC, it’ll be in addition to a first XI striker. I’d be happy with Watkins, DLC and Obi with Zirkzee providing even more cover.
Stop being logical.

I'd have loved to have seen the PSG & Bayern forums when they were first linked with Choupo-Moting as a back-up striker.

They had better squads than us to accommodate

To accommodate a back up striker?

We're going to need a back-up striker whatever happens. If we sign a proper number 9, then Hojlund will be moved on to part fund it. If we don't sign a proper number 9, then we still need a back-up to Hojlund and something to avoid the Plan B being Maguire going up front.

I'm no fan of DCL but can certainly see logic to why we'd be taking a look.

Yeah but I imagine he’ll be looking for a fairly hefty wage. I’d steer well clear

And if that's the case then you walk away after doing your due diligence and gathering the relevant information. Then if he's still available in September, and you still need a back-up striker, then you potentially revisit it.

I think it's unlikely but I don't see any reason to criticise them having a look.

Taking a look is like shopping in bargain bins

Snag Vardy too and maybe we’ll have half a striker total.

Vardy actually is still fit most of the time to be fair. Just is now a Championship at best level striker. DCL is a rarely fully fit Championshio level striker nowadays, even we aren't stupid enough to sign him.

It's just not. It's just taking any excuse to hammer the club. There are plenty of reasons for those who want to hammer the club 24/7 to do so, the club looking at an experienced PL striker to potentially be a back-up isn't one of them.

Would much rather try and get Welbeck if United are going down the cheapo bargain option.

*Until Brighton ask for £25M haha

Scrapping the bottom of barrel if we sign DCL. Surely we can find someone else or don't sign any striker if we are that poor

Would be hugely disappointing. I hope there is no truth in this story. Being linked with Watkins is dissatisfying enough as it is. DCL would be going from shopping in the bargain bin to wading through the dumpster behind the store.

Would have less issue if he wasn't so injury prone

Hasn’t scored double figures in 4 seasons. Wouldn’t even take on a pay as you play deal.

For the love of god please no, is this really the level that we are at now, DCL for gods sake. Id sooner take my chances with Hojlund and Zirkzee and Mbuemo (if we ever get him) and Cuna creating the chances.

Has played 58 league games in the last two seasons.

Which is frightening. 10 goals in 58 games is worse than what Hojlund has managed.

He'd be a depressing signing for West Ham yet alone for a club like Manchester United.

He was on roughly 100k at Everton. Given its his last big payday probably he will likely want higher wages or a big fat sign on fee. The idea he will take a cut deal or even a pay per play deal is utterly absurd, have a word with yourself.

So whoever takes him will probably be paying 120-150k a week due to no transfer fee for 4-5 years. If your being generous you could say as a back up to score 3-7 goals it's costly but maybe they could prove vital this season.

But what happens 2-3 years later when his body is even less capable than now snd still only scoring a few goals. He will have no resale value and no one will pay a fee nor the wages to move him on. You'll be stuck just like you are with so many players with a low scoring striker on reasonable money for 2-3 years.

And finally, is one in something like 5.5 goals good enough? Surely there has to be someone younger/fitter out there on a modest transfer fee but lower wages capable of that sort of return. And even if it does go wrong, you'd still get *some* transfer value back and it's not just totally sunk costs.

That’s has surprised me. But that’s 10 goals in 58 appearances. 1 goal every 6 games. That’s just not good enough.
I'm not suggesting it is good enough. But realistically speaking, if you're looking for a Plan C to save throwing Maguire up front, there are worse options out there. I would be inclined to cut him some slack in that the vast majority of those appearances were under Sean Dyche and simply put, Everton didn't score goals, or even really create goalscoring chances under him - lowest xG in the league last season of the 17 sides that stayed up & one of the lowest the previous season too IIRC.

For the record, I don't like Calvert-Lewin, never have done, but all I've posted in this thread is to discuss why it would be logical for the club to look at him - or a player like him - as a back up to the other strikers. The reality of the matter is he's available on a free, and if his wages were reasonable then he's a striker who is very good aerially, and defends from the front very better than most. You could do much worse as a second or third choice striker, particularly in the system we play. I actually half expected us to try and sign him on loan in January when it was clear that we weren't going to sign a proper striker.

I'd take him as backup, there I said it.

I also think it's the sort of signing that ends up doing surprisingly well.

I would honestly rather take a wild punt on someone like Mauro Icardi if we’re desperate

If there is any truth to this story, then we might just as well put all of the scouting department up for the next bout of redundancies.

After getting knock backs from Delap and Gyokeres, the next best option that a global network of scouts can put forward is Calvert-Lewin?
